Introduction
Hotel sectors have the biggest amount of opportunities to create jobs for the people. Thus the
HRM department is the most influential and important part for any hotel. To please the
customers they need the best representatives and staff to control and manage the hotel
business. And this shows how important HRM is for the hotel sectors. HRM definitely
includes selection in which the top management selects the candidates for the required
positions. Among the potential candidates the top management recruits the best for the job.
Although HRM includes some other things such as making the employees eligible for the
position and also firing them if needed. In this assignment a thorough assessment of the HRM
has been portrayed on the basis of how the hotel industries manage it.

LO 1 Understand Human Resource Management

1.1 Role and Purposes of Human Resource Management

In hotels HRM is a very important part that should be maintained carefully. HRM focuses on
doubling the enactment of the staffs of the organization (Noe, 2012). As having a great group
of staffs in the hotel is must. Thus in Ritz Carlton managing the human resources is the most
prioritized operation. So its beyond mention the role and importance of human resource
management in Ritz Carlton. The hotel always careful about selecting candidates from
thousands of applications. Among the potential candidates the hotel then recruit the best man
for the job. The hotel also provides special training to the staff so that they can handle any
unwanted situation. Providing training is not just making staff efficient but also part of a
strategy of the top management to rule in the industry. HRM also makes organization to
understand the importance of the HRM policies.
Below down the role of the HRM in the Ritz Carlton are given (Tyson, 2014) -

HRM helps the organization to hire the right person for the required position.
Staffs need some special training to manage the customers that arrive in the hotel.
HRM aids the hotel to train them according to the need.

Apart from recruiting and training HRM also made the staff comfortable in the office
environment to work flawlessly.

HRM not only increases the work ability of the staffs it also make staffs more loyal to
their workplace.

HRM gives priority to the needs that should be done immediately.

Now lets look at the purposes of HRM in Ritz Carlton given down (Dessler, 2010) -

HRM in organization increases the proficiency. Moreover it tells the organization


what is the right thing to do.

HRM helps the organization to manage the satisfaction level of the staffs working in
the organization.

As the main task of HRM is to find the most eligible person for the organization, thus
the organization gets benefited from the fact the way HRM works.

HRM works on behalf of the organization to make staffs understand about the
policies and objectives of the organization.

The most important work of HRM is to maintain the relationship among the
management and the staffs.
1.2 Analysis a Human Resources Management Plan

To analysis the HRM plan organizations need to focus on the market demand and supply.
Thus Ritz Carlton will make strategies depending on the work environment. It will also
consider the demand and supply conditions. HRM usually works to hire or fire the staffs of
the organization. Besides these work it also trains the staffs to act according to the situations.
Thus the HRM of Ritz Carlton will work in order to merge the objectives of the organization
and the training need of the staffs. HRM will only hire if there is a need of any staff in the
organization. It can also fire the employees who are not needed in the organization anymore
(Kidwell, 2009).

The strategies that organization make changes over time according to the project they are
dealing with. HRM needs to manage the staffs more when they are given spate project work
(Rejc Buhovac, 2015). Its the time when the organization needs to polish its skill of making
strategies. In hotels there are several projects are taken over the year. Thus the HRM needs to
manage the staffs according to the changing nature of the projects.
When hotels take different projects in the organizations, HRM needs to work the most to
control the changing environment. As the staffs of the organization get affected by these
changes the most. Sometimes HRM needs to distribute the work among the staffs or need to
hire temporary staffs for new projects. HRM can provide launch training program for the
staffs in order to get used to with the new projects. HRM also ensures the safety of the staffs
in the organization. Top management cant handle all the issues related to the staffs. Thus
HRM needs to take care of the right and protection of the staffs in the organization. Thus the
HRM needs to make programs by keeping the safety and right issues of the staffs.

Demand and supply influence an organization a lot. Same goes for the Ritz Carlton. It recruits
and fires the staffs according to the need and supply of the marketplace. Recruiting
procedure is given below according to the supply and demand.

2.1 Employment Relation in Ritz Carlton

Ritz Carlton needs to deal with its other offices as well situated at different locations. Thus
these separate offices has separate management and HRM as well. HRM maintains the
relationship among the employees who are working in Ritz Carlton. It has a great role of
handling the relationship among the top management and the staffs. And these healthy
relationship helps Ritz Carlton to satisfy its customers in the hotels situated at different
locations. The very old school tradition developed in the organizations is that top
management plays the role of decision making. Staffs can participate in it but cant modify
the decisions. But today things are changing as the staffs are given some power to take small
decisions of the organizations in order to deal the unwanted situations. This authorization not
only make the staffs more productive but also ties them with the organizations (Hr.lehigh.edu,
2015).

HRM works to enrich the bonding between the management and the staffs. Thus staffs can
easily ask for support to the seniors without hesitations. Moreover by getting the chance of
interaction with the staffs make the management more connected with the staffs. This
behavior helps the organization to get more productive works from the employees.
Relationship among the management and the staffs also clears out the rules and regulations
followed in the organization. In Ritz Carlton its highly recommended to everyone to follow
the rules of the organization. From tom management to the lower level works, all are bound
to follow the policies developed by the organization. HRM makes sure that the top
management must know about the needs and requirements of the staffs. So that they can work
in support of the staffs. Staffs are also advised to maintain a work ambient thats supportive to
all. They must not demand any unnecessary demands or create fuzz in the organizations.
Otherwise the top management will take strict decisions to handle the situation.
2.2 Employment Law and HR Management in Ritz Carlton

Every hotel has to maintain some rules and regulations. And due this rules and regulations
organizations have to follow some developed acts. Same goes for the Ritz Carlton. These acts
may influence the work environment from different perspectives (Inc.com, 2017). HRM
plays an important role in the hotels to apply these acts on the organizations. These acts also
influence the role of the HRM while recruiting. These acts protect the staffs of the
organization from any kinds of discrimination. As staffs may face some discrimination in the
organization because of their casts and creeds (Civil Rights Act of 1964) (National Archives,
2017). These acts protect their rights. There are some trade unions which also help staffs to
get the rights and protections. Some organizations dont take care of the rights of the
employees. On those moments these trade unions stood by the side of the employees. Laws
also make sure that staffs get the right amount of wages in the organization. If any of the laws
are broken then the employees will get the legal support from the courts. Organizations also
need to maintain the safety issues of the staffs. If any staff gets injured or dies while working
in the organization, its the responsibility of the organization to take care of the situation and
the organization also becomes liable for the incident.

LO 3 Understand the Recruitment and Selection Process of Ritz Carlton


3.1 Job Description and Specification in Ritz Carlton

Like any other organization recruitment process are handled by the HRM of the Ritz Carlton.
These selection and recruitment process holds two more important sections and they are job
description and job specifications. Job description refers to the advertisements of the job. It
includes all the necessary information related to the job. This advertisement appeals the
potential candidates to the organization. And they apply for the position. Job description
comprises the title name of the position, workplace, details about what to do, other essential
elements related to the post (Balentine, 2015).

Another important portion is job specification. Its a written manuscript. In this manuscript all
the requirements are specified in detailed manner that the organization expects from a
candidate. These requirements are related to the educational background of the candidate. It
also specifies the traits that are expected from a person who are applying. It also indicates the
necessity of the previous working experience. Thus while applying for the position the
candidate has all the details about what the organizations expect from him/her (Job
specification, 2011).

In hotels usually jobs are not found as often as any other organizations. Thus while any
vacancy arrives potential candidates has to maintain all the requirements asked by the hotels.
This situation is very obvious for the higher positions of the organization. As so many people
apply for the same post the competition remains high for these positions. And HRM of the
Ritz Carlton also need to work without being biased. In hotel industry qualification is a fact
but the most wanted requirement is the previous work experience. The candidate with the
highest work experience with goodwill will have the chance of the getting the job most.
Although there are also small potions that are always available and hotels often provide
advertisements for those positions. Ritz Carlton also manages special training programs for
the new projects of the hotels.
3.2 Comparison between Ritz Carlton and Others Service Sectors

For the comparison purpose Ive selected Gordon Ramsay against the Ritz Carlton hotel. Its
a popular restaurant and the name has been given after a famous chef and TV personality.
The very first difference that can be identified is the recruitment procedure of both of these
organizations. Ritz Carlton follows the traditional ways of recruiting employees in the hotel
(www.marriott.com, 2017). Whereas its different at the Gordon Ramsay. The restaurant dont
follow the traditional methods while recruiting. The hotel has several connections whereas
the restaurant dont have that much connection. Thus the hotel has much more scope of
having talented staffs than the restaurant. And Ritz Carlton is a hotel it has more job
opportunities than the restaurant. It means Ritz Carlton can recruit staffs more than Gordon
Ramsay.

Ritz Carlton is a hotel thats why it cant directly employ a person. On the other hand Gordon
Ramsay can easily hire anyone just by taking an interview (Gordon Ramsay Restaurants,
2017). So the difference in interviewing method is very clear here. Another difference is, Ritz
Carlton has to hire people from different casts and creeds as it has several branches. But the
Gordon Ramsay dont have to do so. Its based in one place and it wont get versatile
customers. Thus Ritz Carlton has to deal with variety of culture and people.
LO 4 Understanding Training and Development Activities in Ritz Carlton
4.1 Contribution of Training and Development Activities in Ritz Carlton

Organizations arrange training programs in order to develop the operations and skill of the
staffs of the organizations. Thus the progress level increases. More productive output can be
expected from the staffs of the organization. In hotels the most important trait that hotels
polish is the hospitality section. As several people from different countries and cultures
arrives at the hotel. Thus Ritz Carlton always make its staffs prepared for dealing with
different people. To do so Ritz Carlton sometimes arranges training programs. These
programs help the staffs of the Ritz Carlton to improve the skills that they are lacking behind.
These programs often includes subjects like how to deal with different customers, language
issues, handling difficult situations tactfully. This is why hospitality is an important portion of
the hotel business. Hospitality basically refers how the host treats his or her guests. This
treatment decides the reputation of the host, in this case its the hotel (Goldstein, 2014).

These development programs not only help the staffs to achieve the organizational objectives
but also improve the skills of the staffs. So from above description its pretty obvious that
Ritz Carlton has to manage its hospitality section carefully. As its about the reputation of the
hotel. So hotels arranges its programs in order to deal with inevitable situations. As
representatives are the one who first deal with the customers so hotels train them according to
the situations. And its clear how training programs helps the operations of the organizations.

Conclusion
Every hotel has a HRM department. So does Ritz Carlton and this department helps the hotel
to manage the human resources of the organization. HRMs basic job is to select and recruit
people who are eligible and fulfills all the criteria. Ritz Carlton follows traditional methods to
recruit staffs for the hotel. The HRM has designed the department in a way so that it can
work without any restrictions and run the organization by fulfilling the objectives. Ritz
Carlton HRM has took the advantage of the both traditional and modern methods.
Contentment level of the staff is really important for any organizations. As if the staffs arent
happy then the organization may not get the result it wanted from them. HRM works as a
chain that ties the top management and the other levels of staffs. Ritz Carlton also needs the
HRM the most as it has staffs from different cultures and cast. And these staffs have separate
creeds as well. Thus managing these diverse human resource is a very challenging work for
Ritz Carlton. On behalf of the Ritz Carltons management, HRM of Ritz Carlton takes cares
of the rights of the staffs. Thus staffs are happy and they dont need to make any demand to
the management.
