WhyCompressionRatioMatters
byRobertX.Perez

Oneofthecriticalparametersincompressordesignandselectionisthecompressionratio,oftendenotedasr.The
compressionratioissimplytheratiooftheabsolutestagedischargepressuretotheabsolutestagesuctionpressure.

Becausemostgasesincreaseintemperaturewhentheyarecompressed,thefinalcompressoroutlettemperatureisalways
aconcern.Ahighdischargetemperaturecanleadtothefailureofinternalcomponentsduetomaterialdegradationor
excessivethermalexpansion.Compressionratioisalsoimportantindeterminingrequiredhorsepowerthehighertheratio,

DesignTradeoffs

Thereisalwaysatradeoffbetweenthenumberofcompressionstagesandthecompressordischargetemperatureateach

However,themorecompressionstagesinstalled,thesmallerthetemperaturerisewillbeacrosseachstage,allowingthe
