Instructional Project 3

Directions:

This is a research assignment. Use your textbook, web articles, and NAU library to conduct
research when writing this paper.

Use APA style references and in-text- citations. You need to use at least 3 different resources
besides Castronova (2002), and Moore (2015).

Part 1. DISCOVERY LEARNING:

Download and read the following article:

Castronova, J. A. (2002). Discovery learning for the 21st century: What is it and how
does it compare to traditional learning in effectiveness in the 21st century. Action
Research Exchange, 1(1), 1-12. Retrived from

df
After reading this article and conducting additional research, answer to the following
questions.

What is discovery learning?

Discovery learning encompasses an instructional model and strategies that focus on active,
hands-on learning opportunities for students (Dewey, 1916/1997; Piaget, 1954, 1973). Bicknell-
Holmes and Hoffman (2000) describe the three main attributes of discovery learning as 1)
exploring and problem solving to create, integrate, and generalize knowledge, 2) student driven,
interest-based activities in which the student determines the sequence and frequency, and 3)
activities to encourage integration of new knowledge into the learners existing knowledge base
(Castronova, 2002).
How does this form of teaching compare to traditional, teacher-centered instruction?

The most fundamental differences are 1) learning is active rather than passive (Mosca & Howard,
1997), 2) learning is process-oriented rather than content-oriented, 3) failure is important, 4)
feedback is necessary (Bonwell, 1998), and 5) understanding is deeper (Papert, 2000)
(Castronova, 2002).

What educational theories support the discovery learning model?

Constructivist theory, Democracy and Education, To Understand is to Invent support the discovery-
learning model.

What is the most important thing you discovered about discovery learning?

Students learn more and retain information longer when they are actively involved in constructing
their own knowledge. Discovery learning activities motive students by being active learners.

When someone asked Edison if he felt discouraged by so many failures, he responded that he
never felt discouraged because he had learned thousands of
designs that do not work ((Castronova, 2002).

How can you apply this method to your future classroom?

I can apply discovery learning in my classroom to teach student science topics. I can provide more
hands-on activities to help my students develop creative and problem-solving skills.

Part 2. ADDITIONAL CHAPTERS

Select one of the following chapters to conduct research: Chapter 2, 3, 5 or 12.
Review the chapter and respond to related questions for that chapter by conducting
your own research.

Chapter 5- Using Classroom Technology

1. How does technology enhance the teachers ability to plan instruction? Use one of
the available search engines to explore the web for technological tools such as
lesson planning software, worksheets and puzzle tools, poster and bulletin board
production tools, and time management tools that will assist you in planning. Share
your findings with your class.

When technology integration in the classroom is seamless and thoughtful, students not only
become more engaged, they begin to take more control over their own learning, too. Effective tech
integration changes classroom dynamics, encouraging student-centered project-based learning.

Teachers can use many technology tools in their classrooms.

1. Google Apps for Education Suite

Google docs and presentations. This gets students to work collaboratively and simultaneously.
Students love to work together and they can be on the same document together, contributing.
Students can also comment and continue their work outside of the classroom.

2. Formative

It allows you to create online formative assessments quickly and you can monitor the students as
they complete the assessment and can even grade the assessment as they are completing it. You
can literally see what they are doing and it has an option for them to draw or type. You can also
upload any worksheet and turn into an assessment, which can be typed or drawn on.

3. Screencast-O-Matic

Screencast-O-Matic can be used to record videos which explain basic skills and concepts.
Students watch these videos in their own time, which frees up class time for analysis and
discussion.

4. Classkick

Classkick can be used as a way for students to work in groups, doing an activity that has them
moving about, but getting feedback from the teacher without having the tacher talk to them directly.

5. Pear Deck

Pear Deck is a hybrid interactive presentation, inquiry-based learning, and formative assessment
tool.

6. Padlet

Padlet is a great way to get students to talk and participate without having to be the center of
attention. It helps students who do not usually raise their hands to be actively engaged. Students
like to see the instant responses.

7. ExitTicket

ExitTicket allows teachers to monitor the progress of every student.

8. Showbie

Showbie can be used for electronic file submission from students. Students can submit labs,
homework and worksheets for the teacher to grade.

9. PowerPoint
PowerPoint is an ideal tool for creating memorable classroom presentations.

10. Clicker

Classroom response systems, or clickers, offer an active learning approach. Each student has a
small transmitter (clicker) that looks much like a TV remote control. The classroom has one or
more receivers that picks up the signals generated when a student pushes one of the buttons and
a computer equipped with the appropriate software records the student responses.

11. Smart Board

SMART Boards are powerful tools that use touch screen technology and a computer with a large
screen presentation. These flat screen monitors are networked with the teachers classroom
computer and the schools Internet connection. Interactive lessons for the students can be put on
the screen, and images from the computer can be displayed.

12.PDA

A PDA, also known as a palmtop computer, is a mobile device that functions as a personal
information manager. PDAs often have applications such as word processing, spreadsheet,
personal organizers, and calculators, as well as the ability to connect to the Internet. PDAs are
reasonably affordable when compared to desktop computers.

2. Technology offers tools that can help students learn. To what technology should
students have access? Do you have any educational concerns about the use of these
technologies in schools? If so, what are they? If not, why not?

Technology has a very important role in education. In schools, student should have access to all
technology tools that can be used to help students learning. I use Chromebook in my classroom.

My major concern is Cyberbullying. One of my 6th grade student created social media accounts by
using another students personal information. He used those accounts to bully other students in the
school. It was reported to Dean of Discipline and the student was expelled from the school.

I think, parents always need to monitor their students while they are using social media accounts.
There must be a time limitation for student to use social media at home. I believe that students
must not use social media at school for any reasons.
