Individual Goals
From your last unit, identify all of your individual goals relevant to maths. Reflect on each in the
table below and set some new goals for this coming unit of work.

Initial goal How did you attempt to For the next maths unit,
achieve this goal? Were you how might you revise this
successful? goal? What is your strategy
for achieving it?

Focus on Extensions I was successful in this goal I feel like this is a goal that I
because I was able to grown worked well in and that I
in thinking off other situations should continue in this unit.
these math concepts apply to. My new goal is to make sure I
fully understand each math
concept and be able to build
upon them to greater my
understanding.

Leadership roles I was successful in this goal I want to keep this goal this
in practicing being a leader unit because I feel like theres
but there is still a lot of much more I can learn as
growth that I am able to do. leader. My revised goal is to
observe my classmates
facilitating techniques and use
some if those qualities to
better my leadership skills.

Connect Physics to Maths I dont think I was very I feel like this is a good goal
successful in this goal to keep this unit especially
because I wasnt thinking because the project is a joint
about throughout all of last with physics. My goal is to
unit. better understanding of the
connection of physics and
math.

Revised Goal List for this unit of work:

1. My new goal is to make sure I fully understand each math concept and be able to build
upon them to greater my understanding.
2. My revised goal is to observe my classmates facilitating techniques and use some if those
qualities to better my leadership skills.
3. My goal is to better understanding of the connection of physics and math.
Mathematical Concepts and weekly growth
Each week, reflect on your maths work, skills as a collaborator and one or more of your
individual goals. Provide evidence of your growth and plans for the coming week

Week 1:

week?

Cutting a pie I grew in understanding of finding a pattern. While working on

this problem I used starting small because I found the number
of pies slices with each cut, then found an equation that worked
with the first and all slices.

Individual goals - which Evidence of your growth and plans for next week
individual goal did you make
progress in this week?

None. This week I wasnt able to make growth in my goals because I

was absent for most of the week. Next week I want to connect
my math to physics, I want to do this more throughout this unit
because I didnt do this last unit.
Week 2:
Mathematical Skill - what Evidence of your growth and understanding. Think about

week?

Accountability Quiz This week I learned how shadows affect the way patterns are
found. I got to improve my understanding of slope and refresh
what I missed last week. The habits I used this week was
collaborate and listen in my table group because when we were
trying to figure the question we had to work together to have
everyone understand how shadows create different patterns.

Accountability Quiz I feel like I grew in my collaboration skills because missing

most of last week I really had to work well with the people I sat
with. I grew in my observation skills in paying attention to
precise measurements and making sure I do transfer all the
correct information to get the right solution. I want to be more
of a leader next week because I felt more like just a group
member this week and I can improve my leadership skills.

Individual goals - which Evidence of your growth and plans for next week
individual goal did you make
progress in this week?

Connect Physics to math I feel like I definitely grown in this because I used my previous
knowledge of shadows and how to change them in creating the
diagram. I want to work on my leadership skills next week and
improve.

Week 3:
Mathematical Skill - what Evidence of your growth and understanding. Think about
did you learn or work on this habits of mathematicians you used!
week?

Proportions This week I grew in understanding proportions during the

participation quiz. My group and I took the average length of
our arms and noses, compared to two variables, then applied it
to lady liberty. The habits I used in this was starting small and
staying organized. The way I used starting small was by using
our means and applying it to lady liberty. I also used stay
organized in keeping my paper together and keeping my work
clear and legible.

Group collaboration and Evidence of your growth. What do you want to try this
participation - what week?

Participation Quiz The way I grew in this was by really listening and making sure
everyones ideas were heard. When working on the problem we
used Melia and Matias idea of finding the mean and Steven
and Is idea to take our nose and arm lengths to find liberty's
arm length.

Individual goals - which Evidence of your growth and plans for next week
individual goal did you make
progress in this week?

Leadership The way that I grew in my leadership skills was by making

sure everyones ideas were included. Sometimes when I start
working I tend to get set on one idea to solve the problem. In
the participation quiz we used everyones idea to find the
solution. My goal for this week is to connect my math work to
physics.

Week 4:
Mathematical Skill - what Evidence of your growth and understanding. Think about
did you learn or work on this habits of mathematicians you used!
week?

Similar Triangles This week I grew in my understanding of triangles being

similar. This week I learned the AAA and SSS rules. The AAA
rule implies that if all three angles are the same for two
triangles they will be similar. The SSS rule implies that if all
the sides are the same length of two triangles, they will be
congruent. The habits I used this week were collaborate and
listen with conjecture and test.

N by N POW This week I grew in my collaboration when finding a solution.

We conjectured and tested many functions to try and find a
solution that would fit all the in and out table. This week I want
to start to practice more of my leadership skills.

Individual goals - which Evidence of your growth and plans for next week
individual goal did you make
progress in this week?

Connection to Physics The way I grew in this week in my goal was by connecting the
angle work we did to the refraction problem. I learned that the
refraction would not equal a straight line so using the
information that was given and plugging it into snells law to
find the angle of refraction. This week I want to work in my
table group as one not with a leader and followers.
Week 5:
Mathematical Skill - what Evidence of your growth and understanding. Think about
did you learn or work on this habits of mathematicians you used!
week?

Triangles This week I grew in learning that a triangle always creates a

180 angle. The way I started doing this is by creating a triangle
and re-assembled it so all the sides would create a straight line.
The habits I used when working on this problem was
collaborate and listen. Libby gave us the idea of rearranging the
triangle to create a straight line and Leslie and I created a
diagram.

Accountability Quiz This week I collaborated with my group when understanding

the ratios for the accountability quiz. We were all very unsure
of how to create an equation that would compare the two
triangles. After talking about the different solutions we could
use Dr. Cate helped us understand that if two triangles are
similar and dont have labeled lengths you can write it as
a/b=x/y.

Individual goals - which Evidence of your growth and plans for next week
individual goal did you make
progress in this week?

Group Collaboration I feel like I have definitely grown in this because instead of
working as a leader all of us worked as a group and understood
the similar triangles work fully. Next week I will be working on
Connecting Trig to Physics.

Week 6:
Mathematical Skill - what Evidence of your growth and understanding. Think about

week?
Tangent - Smokey The bear I grew in learning how to learn tangent. Going into this
problem I had no idea how you could use the length of the
adjacent and angle to find the length of the opposite. But after
looking at our past work with sine I thought that tangent would
work the same way but with opposite over adjacent. The habit I
could have used was seek and prove why, I could have used
this because I was very confused at first and if I had asked a
question I could have saved lots of time.

Ray Diagrams I collaborated with Elisabeth when working on the ray diagram
packet. We were both confused of how the light beams would
bounce off the mirrors but after watching the youtube videos I
had a very good understanding of how they work. Something I
would like to work on this week is connecting trigonometry to
the refraction problem we did a few weeks ago.

Individual goals - which Evidence of your growth and plans for next week
individual goal did you make
progress in this week?

Connecting Maths to Physics I feel I have done a very good job connecting maths to physics
in my ray diagrams. The concept of angle of incidence is equal
to angle of reflection tied into our angles and geometry work.
Next week I want to continue to connect our math work to
physics because it will help me while making our physics
project.
Week 7:
Mathematical Skill - what Evidence of your growth and understanding. Think about

week?

Trigonometry This week I definitely grew in my understanding of tangent,

sine, and cosine. After the trigonometry activity I applied the
information to the trigonometry packet and have gotten a great
understanding or opposite, adjacent, and hypotenuse. The
habits I used this week were being systematic because when I
messed the right angle ratios up I had to make small changes to
find the correct answer.

Trigonometry Packet I have grown in my group collaboration while working on this

because I taught my peers how the ratios of sine, cosine, and
tangent worked. I feel like I have grown in this because I am
not a great teacher but I was able to explain in such way of
Mercedes understanding the differences.

Individual goals - which Evidence of your growth and plans for next week
individual goal did you make
progress in this week?

Focus on Extensions This week I focused on extensions and continued to connect

my math work to physics. The way I focused was by
challenging myself in completing the trig packet. While
working on this I continued to switch the opposite and adjacent
making my work incorrect. I connected maths to my physics
work because when drawing my ray diagrams I learned that the
mirrors in the stereoscope have to be parallel.

Summary of understanding. (If someone outside the school asked you to explain what you
learned during this unit and how it is relevant to your life, what would you say? Think about the
progression of concepts from start to finish and think about what new things you would like to
learn and why.)
If someone asked me to explain what we learned in this unit I would say We learned
how to solve problems many different ways. One of the things that stood out to me most was
learning how to learn differently. During this project we learned different ways to think (more
specifically) solve ratios and compare shapes to find similarities. This is relevant to my life
because though I will not be learning ratios all my life I will be able to use the different methods
of learning. In the beginning of this unit I really wanted to focus on connecting my maths work
to physics because I didnt work on it as much as I planned last unit. Connecting my maths to
physics really came in handy when creating the plan for our optical device and I feel I achieved
this goal every week.

Provide a justification for your grade:

Grade Justification. (Looking back over all of your work during this unit, suggest a grade that
you think you deserve and provide justification for that grade. Explain how you have grown as a
mathematician and in your effort to achieve goals. Remember that a higher grade is justified by
growth not final proficiency. For example, even if you understood all of the mathematical
concepts, but you didnt challenge yourself in your group work or to achieve your goals, your
grade would not be as high.)
I definitely feel like I deserve an A in this unit because I was able to achieve my goals,
challenge myself greatly, fully understood the content and worked well as the group leader. The
goal I feel most proud of is Connecting Maths to Physics: This is because I learned to not only
apply what I learn in school to reality, I could apply it to my other school work. I challenged
myself in doing more challenging work in my action plans and helping others in their school
work. While doing this I achieved my other goals of focusing on extensions and being a leader. I
fully understood this content and enjoyed learning about geo/trigonometry. My goals for next
semester is to push myself and start working on Maths honors work, Continue to be a leader, to
ask more thoughtful questions, and continue to improve in my work. The way I will do this is by
coming in at lunch on mondays to do challenge option work, Push myself to work as a leader and
use others leadership qualities to help me improve, and to not be shy in asking questions.
