Title: A STUDY ON METALLIC TIBIA TRAY COMPONENTS IN TOTAL KNEE REPLACEMENT USING
FUNCTIONALLY GRADED MATERIAL (FGM)
Program/ Group: EM220 / EMD8M11

Name of Supervisor: ASSOC. PROF. DR. SOLEHUDDIN SHUIB

Semester: 8

B. ABSTRACT: To be filled by student

This project is about the study on metallic tibia tray components in Total Knee
Replacement (TKR) using functionally graded material (FGM). The analysis involve the
movement of knee joint during zero degree of angle of flexion until deep flexion by using finite
element analysis. Different angle of flexion will give the different net force and the stress
distribution. For this project, 4 angles used for the analysis which are 0, 90, 135, and 165 degrees.
From there, the result from tibial insert component will be considered in terms of its von Mises
stress, shear stress and deformation. Functionally graded material (FGM) means material that can
have properties gradually vary in space because its composition and/or microstructure gradually
vary in space according to designed law. The finite element analysis (FEA) will be carry out with
same 3-D design of knee implant but different material selection for tibial base. The material used
for this analysis is functionally graded material (FGM) which is composed of metal and ceramic.
The analysis using FGM will be done to find the optimal gradation direction of elastic modulus
in tibial tray. The performance of knee implant will be improved by using FGM since the
properties of FGM itself quite similar to the actual bone.
