EXPERIMENT 2 Familiarity with Parts of a Compass

OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the session, students should be able to:
Identify different parts of a compass and how they function.

DESCRIPTION OF INSTRUMENTS:
1. Compass Box
It is a circular box of diameter 85 to 110 mm having pivot at the center and covered
with plain glass at top.
2. Magnetic Needle
It facilitates in taking the bearings of survey lines with reference to the magnetic north.
3. Graduated Ring
The bearings are marked inverted on the graduated rings from 0 o to 360o in a clockwise
starting from 0o to south.
4. Pivot
Magnet is freely held with this.
5. Object Vane
It consists of prism with a sighting slit at the top. The prism magnifies and erects the
inverted graduations.
6. Brake Pin
It is pressed to stop the oscillations of the graduated ring.
7. Lifting Pin
On pressing it brings the lifting lever into action.
8. Color Glasses
Red and blue glasses are provided with the prism to sight luminous objects.
