PEPSI Observation Lara 2

Jaden Lara is six years old. Jaden is an active, fun, full of energy six year old

boy. He is in the Kindergarten and he likes going to school but sometimes has days

where he struggles a lot with going to school. Once he gets to school he is fine and he

completes the school day. Jaden is the youngest in his family and has one sibling

that is older than him his sister. He gets really engaged in all crafts and loves to be

read to. Jaden is one of the tallest boys in his class. Jaden says his favorite time at

school is recess and PE. He does like to do math and sometimes reading is fun too

but he does get frustrated when he doesnt know all the words. If he sees a lot of

words on a page he sometimes gets overwhelmed and doesnt want to read

anymore.

Jaden likes to be outside and ride his four-wheeler at his Grandma and

Grandpas cabin. Jaden also likes to play all kinds of sports especially soccer and flag

football. He also likes to play with his cousins. Jaden is a very caring person

and seems to always be watching out for others. Whether or not it is a family

member, a friend, classmate or his teacher. He really likes to help out and be

recognized for that as well. Jaden gets nervous pretty easily right now. He tends to

worry about things that havent happened yet or will be happening at school.

Jaden has a dog, cat, and a fish. His favorite food is pizza. He likes the color

blue. Jaden went to preschool for two years and enjoyed attending that. Towards

the end of his last preschool year before Kindergarten sometimes Jaden would cry

and not want to stay but then once he was left he would be just fine and participate

in class activities and do his work. His parents are divorced but are both still

involved. Jaden lives with his mother full time. He loves being with his Grandma and

Grandpa also.

In his Physical Development he does get frequent colds and illnesses, which

could be related to being exposed to more children along with germs. You can

visibly see the stress that school causes him to have. He will not eat breakfast in the

mornings and tends to throw up before going to school. During school he does have

to use the restroom often but does not have any accidents.

Jaden has an increase of aches and pains. I believe they are stress related as

well he will get headaches sometimes; stomach aches just about everyday along

with his legs hurting. Jaden is a fun, active, happy boy. Jaden likes to play with his

classmates and run, jump and play games. He just stresses and worries a lot.

Jaden is close with his mother and doesnt like to have to leave her. He is very

attached to her and cries when she has to leave him at school. After about five to ten

minutes after she is gone he is fine and you wouldnt know that he had any trouble

at all. He participates in class activity but doesnt like to be put on the spot since he

sometimes feels unsure of his answers. Jaden follows the rules and likes other

classmates to follow them as well. He likes to stay on task but sometimes says he

doesnt know certain sight words when asked by his teacher but will tell them to his

mother. Jaden worries about school and gets even more concerned if his teacher

has a substitute for the day. It seems like he doesnt like change for example if his

teacher happens to be sick and cant come to school the class then needs a substitute

teacher and he becomes very nervous.

In reference to our textbook regarding equilibration; Jaden shows sign of not

caring for when there is disequilibration when something is not consistent or

something new and unexpected happens causing him to question or be unsure of

the outcome. It makes him question what is going on and then he asks a lot more

questions so he can create a mental structure that helps him bring his mental world

of how he sees things or thinks back into a balance for him that makes him feel

secure.

In observing Jaden, he likes to be able to rest; he is extremely active and does

have good control over his body. He uses scissors extremely well and likes to cut

out. He also holds his pencil correct. Jaden doesnt like to talk in front of a large

group. As stated in the textbook it helps for children who dont like to talk in front

of large groups to do sharing time and other activities that will help them feel more

comfortable. In talking with his teacher she did say that he will participate in

sharing time and is starting to talk more when he is doing sharing time. You are

slowly seeing that he doesnt get as nervous in this setting.

Also, as mentioned in the textbook on page 82, competence is encourage by

interaction, interest, opportunities, urging, limits, admiration, and signs of

affections. Even though Jaden is in kindergarten now he still shows that he likes to

be encouraged to make the most of his abilities by adults. Which is normal for

preschoolers as well. Some of the items listed were; adults should interact with the

child often in a variety of ways, show interest in what he does, encourage child to do

many things, provide opportunities for the child to investigate and mature. He also

likes to be communicated to in a sincere and warm way. If he feels intimidated he

shys away. Jaden likes to feel acknowledged by his teacher. Jaden isnt the only

student in his class that gets nervous or cries his actions too might be lasting longer

cause there are other boys in the class that cry and dont want to leave their parents

so he sees that they do this and it doesnt make it easier to separate.

Jaden show interest in initiating activities and will participate in tasks for the

sake of working and being involved. He likes to work together on tasks, he also

shows that he is very close with his mother and attached to her, and he can be very

verbal in describing his ideas and needs. Jaden wants to make sure what he saying

that he is understood and that you understand what he is trying to get across.

Referencing the textbook on page 125, there are often misconceptions that a person

who has strength in a particular intelligence will excel on all tasks within that

domain. Which isnt so. Instead of focusing on how much intelligence students have

we need to attend to the different ways in which students make the most of their

intelligences.

In Philosophical Development, Jaden is a good student because he wants to

be. He gets along with other children his age, likes to be praised and enjoys

conforming. Children this age exaggerate often, which is normal and nothing to

worry about. Self-Efficacy becomes an important influence on intellectual and social

behavior. This refers to how capable people believe they are at dealing with self-

efficacy.

In observing his Social Development, Jaden is friendly and helpful with all his
PEPSI Observation Lara 6

classmates. He likes to help others and help his teacher. Jaden is always looking out

for others. As stated in the textbook on page 45 it references that, Children are

more likely to discuss, analyze and debate the merits of another childs view of

some issues. The balance of power between children and adults is simply too

unequal.

You notice in this stage that there is more gender based friendships and they

wont refuse to interact with members of opposite sec when directed by parents and

teachers. When they are left to their own decision they will most likely avoid the

opposite sex. The peer groups become powerful and being to replace adults as the

major source of behavior standards and recognition of achievement. It still happens

frequently that students will quarrel. Words are used more often than physical

aggression, but many boys may indulge in punching, wrestling and shoving.

As referenced from the textbook students are sensitive to criticism and

ridicule they do have difficulty adjusting to failure. Young children need frequent

praise and recognition. They tend to admire their teachers and are sometimes

crushed by criticism. Be sure to provide positive reinforcement as frequently as

possible and reserve your negative reactions for nonacademic behavior.

Jaden like most primary grade children are eager to please their teacher.

They like to help, enjoy responsibility and want to do well on their schoolwork. He

likes to help with door holding or other classroom jobs. He is also sensitive to the

feelings of others. He doesnt like when students are picked on and will not engage

in it. He has let the teacher know what is going on so she is aware of the situation.

Jadens Intellectual Development he enjoys role learning. He does sometimes

skip numbers when counting after 20 or will start over in counting so he counts it

correct. His attention span is starting to increase. So far nothing was too concerning

in regards to his learning. Depending on the situation or who is around he will

become shy and quiet. He is showing improvement from the beginning of the year

and has slowly came around and doesnt shy away as easily. As he becomes more

comfortable with his surroundings he opens up more and gets more involved with

class activities.

His reading is improving and he does read out loud, along with telling sight

words when asked. From time to time he may sound out his words that he may be a

little unsure of. With more practice and repetition he should do that less.

With having positive reinforcement and encouragement Jaden will improve

and become more excited and not worry as much about school. As he learns that

school is a fun, exciting place to come learn and he comes out of his shell a little bit

he will engage in more activities and find more enjoyment in school. Jaden can

practice at home with his mother as well and become more fluent in his reading and

sight words. Along with his counting so that he will skip less numbers when he does

count. With repetition it will become easier and he wont have to pause to think

about things as much. As Jaden gets older and matures he should grow out of his

worrying and becoming nervous. Hopefully having less stomach aches and

headaches in regards to stress from school. Encourage Jaden to keep active and

involved with activities so he keeps learning and growing.
