SITUATION ANALYSIS

Malnutrition is due to lack or excess, or imbalance in one or more nutrients. It is one of

the major problems in many barangay including barangay Ungot.

Malnutrition in Ungot is classified as protein energy malnutrition. This is because the

child does not eat enough food rich in carbohydrates, fats and protein resulting in weight loss
thereby producing a child who is wasted and stunted. The affected group are the pre-school and
school children based on the OPT 2014 and baseline of school children 2014-2015. There are
11 pre-school pupils with weights below normal or 2% and 89 school children with weights
below normal or 17%.

Majority of the children resided at Blocks 1, 3, 5 and 6.

For the past several years up to the present, the basic causes of malnutrition are

1. Problem related to human resources such as inadequate knowledge, inadequate skills,

and inadequate time.
2. Problem related to economic resources such as poverty, and lack of jobs and
opportunities.
3. Inadequate organizational resources such as poor health care programs and water and
waste system.

In Barangay Ungot, low or inadequate food intake is a result of low food supply. Some
families have low educational attainment and have inadequate skills and not interested in
own food production. Others, although they have land to till, lack in planting materials
and other resources. As a result, they have a low and poor food distribution in the
household resulting to low food intake and underweight children.

Majority of the families have no income due to unemployment and underemployment.

While food is available in the market, the families cannot avail of right quality and
quantity of food because of the high price of food commodities. They have low purchasing
power and expenditure on food resulting to low food supply.

Inadequate knowledge on nutrition and health is also a problem which leads to poor
health status causing frequent illnesses thus aggravating malnutrition.

The barangay nutrition committee was reorganized 1 year ago during the assumption of
our newly elected barangay chairman. The committee is doing its best to improve the
health and nutrition situation of the barangay.

Establish of fruit and vegetable gardens in backyard and at the school are being
encouraged as well as the backyard livestock and rich farming as addition sources of
income.

The barangay officials are doing their best to address the problem of unemployment,
underemployment and poverty by coordinating with the local government unit through
the city manpower and development office to conduct livelihood and skills training. Some
of which are reflexology, cosmetology, food processing, dressmaking, curtain making and
cell phone repair to their constituents so that they will have job opportunities.

DSWD is also granting financial assistance under the indigence program of the city mayor
to individual in crisis situation.

With the regard to the health care of the barangay, it has 1 barangay health station, a
midwife who visits the barangay once a week, 1 barangay nutrition scholar and 20
barangay health workers.

Micronutrient supplementation such as vitamin A and Iron supplementation is being

implemented 2x a year in April and October to coincide with the Garantisadong Pambata
(GP) as well as deworming of pre-school children. Targeted groups are pregnant and
locating women, infants and pre-school children.

Mass deworming of school children are also being done by the Department of Education
(Dep. Ed.).

Iodized salt utilization is being advocated and iodized salt testing is being done with the
households and establishment like sari-sari store.

Monitoring of sari-sari stores, school canteen and bakeries on SANGKAP PINOY seal
products and fortified foods are being conducted.

Nutrition information campaign, health education and sanitation are continuously being
done in the community and at the school by health workers and nutrition leaders.
Nutrition month is celebrated by disseminating the nutrition month theme through
mothers classes during EPI and pre-natal days.

Training and seminars of health workers and community members on health and
nutrition is being done.

Health and Nutrition is considered an integral part of the over-all socio-economic

development because a healthy citizenry leads to more productivity and increase in
income. When income increases, access to socio-economic needs improve. This
eventually leads to over-all development and better quality of life.

Nutrition status is not determined simply by the food supply. Rather, nutrition is an
outcome household food security, good health services and a healthy environment.
People should be well fed, healthy and well cared for. FOODS, HEALTH and CARE are the
foundation of good nutrition.
