Advice for a Successful HOSA
We all know how stressful and overwhelming ones first, or even third,
HOSA can be, so here is some advice from some of your seasoned HOSA
members!

Reese Weingaertner:

If theres something that someone needs to worry about as far as

HOSA competitions go, itd be waiting. The waiting is killer; dont psych
yourself out about your competition while sitting there, find some friends,
talk, bring cards or a book, and just relax knowing youre prepared.

Aksah Cherian:

HOSA is an amazing organization to grow as a leader and learn as a

future health professional ONLY if you are willing to step out of your
comfort zone and spread your wings. My first advice would be to try a
competitive event that sparks your interest even if you think the
competition will be stiff and out of your comfort zone- as long as you put
your all into studying and practicing you should have nothing to worry
about; my second advice, especially for those who have a heart for leading,
is to take advantage of the leadership opportunities given through HOSA-
these opportunities are not given to everyone so, if you can, please make
the most of it! Lastly, have fun and enjoy your time in HOSA, life is short
and sooner or later your time being a part of HOSA will soon pass by.

Bree Heilman:

For your event, you really need to crack down on the studying, and
if you have a presentation, you should be planning and gathering all the
materials you need. At SLC, you should expect a lot of waiting but that
should be used as study time or time to get everything in order before you
compete. It really isnt anything to get too nervous about, just do the best
you can and have fun because it really is fun and all this hard work really
does pay off , because no matter how you do in your competition, as long
as you feel like you did your best, its an amazing feeling knowing what
you can accomplish. Plus, theres a Starbucks.

Laila Karim:

Take your competitions seriously!!! Going to Internationals is an

amazing experience but you cant get there without hard work.

Hesham Kalidy:

I would say just to pick an event that best suits your interest and
you just have fun with it. Its not the end of the world if you dont place.
HOSA is meant to be fun and relaxing so as long as you try your best and
have fun, thats all that matters.
The Truth about Electronic CigarettesChristina Brady

The topic of electronic cigarettes is a topic that is under studied,

therefore leading people to believe false accusations regarding electronic
cigarettes. Many studies have been done to show the effects of e-cigs, on
mice and people in 2001, when many microwave popcorn factory workers
developed a respiratory disease called Bronchiolitis obliterans (popcorn
lung). The CDC determined, through tests, that the disease was cause by a
chemical named diacetyl, a chemical also found as one of the main
chemicals in e-cigs.

When comparing cigarettes and e-cigs, it is hard to

say which one has more negative effects. They are
both bad for the human body, and they are two
separate things that harm the body in different
ways. Cigarettes cause cancer because of the
nicotine. There are e-cigs without nicotine available
to purchase, but that is not taking into consideration
the other harmful chemicals found in e-cigs.

Along with diacetyl, used to supply the butter flavor to popcorn,

there are chemicals such as; glycol/glycerol, used for emergency aviation
training and antifreeze production, 2,3 pentanedione, used for various
flavoring, and propylene glycol, used in packaging, textiles, paper, and lab
equipment. Many of these chemicals are harmless unless inhaled, and they
can cause respiratory distress, fibrosis in the lungs, and dried out mucus
membranes.

The various and fun flavors of the electronic cigarettes allow them
to be very appealing to the younger generations. The Center for Disease
Control and Prevention said 250,000
middle and high school students never
smoked regular cigarettes, but had used
e-cigarettes 3 times as many as 2011!
