Reflection
Description

This journal is about the effects of hospice-shared care for terminally ill gastric
cancer patients. Gastric cancer is one of the most frequently occurring malignancies
worldwide with highest incidences occurring among East Asian population. Despite of
the advancement of medical technology the prognosis of gastric cancer remains
unsatisfactory and the treatment for the late stages of gastric cancer is still
chemotherapy which is expensive and has a disadvantage to the health of the patients
because of radiation.
Thats why they did a study about hospice care. Hospice care is a Care designed
to give supportive care to people in the final phase of a terminal illness and focus
on comfort and quality of life, rather than cure. The goal is to enable patients to be
comfortable and free of pain, so that they live each day as fully as possible. They
try to engage the patients to hospice-shared care which shows a great
improvement to the quality of life of gastric cancer patients. It also help the patients
to decrease the use palliative treatments and lower the incidence of going to
intensive care unit.
Feelings

In this journal I felt that hospice-shared care can really help the cancer patients
improve their health. Because it lessen the patients engagement to radiation which is
harmful to our health. It also help the patient to be pain-free from chemotherapy and
help them to be their loved ones more. Hospice care focused on giving care to the
patients than to cure them which help give the patients a dignity to live and to die
peacefully.
Evaluation

On evaluation, this journal gave me more insights about hospice care and
palliative care specially the difference of the two in caring for cancer patients. Hospice
care is more on patients who are terminally ill while palliative care is more on patients
who are not necessarily need to be in terminally ill. Both of the care has a advantages
and disadvantages. For hospice care it may be too late for the patients to survived the
cancer but at least they enjoy their life free from pain and with their family at most time
which is very important because supportive environment is need for them to continue
on living while on palliative care it will help the patients to reduce their illness and can
help them live longer but because it is expensive and lessen the quality of family time.
Analysis

This journal helps me to reflect on giving care to cancer patients. As a student nurse
it help to seek more on the alternative treatments for cancer patients. Because cancer
is a very deadly disease which can affect anybody that is why a healthy lifestyle is has
a big impact to combat different illnesses. And as a future registered nurse I want to
deliver what I have learn as a student to help them and provide all my best to give a
quality care for the cancer patients.
Conclusion

Overall I have learned a lot in this journal not only in giving care to cancer patients
but to all the patients that I will be handling in the future. It was able to relate the
situation happening in this journal. It gives me knowledge about the difference of
hospice care and palliative care.
Action plan

To complete my reflection I promise myself that I will be sure to study hard to be

competent in facing my patients and when this situation where I care for a cancer
patients I will be able to educate them and provide the quality care they deserved.
