We congratulate you on your decision to purchase this package of the Vienna Symphonic Library. You are now the
owner of part of the most comprehensive Orchestral Sample Library that has ever been created.
In order to help you get started, this manual will assist you with the intricacies of getting the most out of these samples.
The structure of the libraries, while not simple due to the sheer mass of voicings, styles, and performances, still has
been kept as clear as possible, is consistent from instrument to instrument, and in the final run will facilitate your work
rather than make it more difficult. For example, you can easily swap a flute for a trumpet and immediately listen to the
result without having to fiddle around with MIDI controllers or sysex commands; the result will be as you intended within
the instruments capabilities.
We have taken great care to record these samples. There may be different views on purity, but we dont think that it
means excluding all the reverb by recording in an anechoic studio as it tends to make an instrument sound flat, if not
dead Rather, we opted for recordings with a measured amount of ambience, so that an instrument may stand for
itself without sounding uninspired, but still leave you the freedom to add your own ideas about space.
To further facilitate your work with the Vienna Symphonic Library, we offer you the Vienna Symphonic Librarys
Performance Tool which will allow you to take advantage of our advanced sampling features, like true instrument
legato and elastic repetition performances. You can use these advanced features effortlessly without having to bother
with key switches and program changes.
For now, we just hope that you are satisfied with the Vienna Symphonic Library, and that it will make your experience

Getting started
Installing Vienna Symphonic Library

Copy all or selected .gig files from the DVDs to a folder on your hard disk. Some of the files are larger than 1 GB, so
make sure there is enough space on your disk. For a better overview, keeping the default directory structure of the DVD
is recommended. The disk or folder must be selected in Gigas Quicksound Advanced settings.
Loading .gig files

GigaStudio/GigaSampler has its own display of active drives and directories. Here, you can access the Library files.
Clicking on the + sign next to a filename will display the instruments it contains. You can make your selection by
double-clicking on the instrument name (loads into the next free channel) or dragging it to the channel you want. Due
to the size of most of the Librarys .gig files you might run into computer memory trouble if some instruments are
already loaded and you try to load an entire file.

Overview of playing techniques
Description instruments
In every .gig file, there are a number of description instruments. These are written in capitals and do not contain any samples.
They only serve for keeping a clear overview within a .gig file. If you load an entire file that contains BASIC INSTRUMENTS,
this will be loaded into the channel, and you will not hear anything on that channel until you select another instrument
from Gigas Loaded Instruments display. The description instruments are further explained below.
The Mapping List

The mapping list which makes the main part of this manual gives brief descriptions for every file and instrument in your
Library. Every instrument lists its bank and program number, mapping range, release time, Giga RAM requirements,
and a brief general description. Basic instruments are listed with their number of velocity layers and ranges as well as
the number of samples they contain. Combinations also contain explanations concerning controllers.

Category and instrument names

The instruments contained in the files are named and sorted according to the following criteria:
For every main group, there are description instruments. These are written in capital letters and do not contain any
samples. They should only help you to quickly find the proper section.
Generally, one should only load sounds from the quicksound database, as one will hardly ever need the full number of
instruments contained in a file, and some of the files really are quite large.

These contain all basic Giga instruments without combinations no key switches, modwheels, release triggers, etc.

FILTER CONTROL
For some instruments, there are variations with a lowpass filter whose cutoff can be controlled with the modulation
wheel.
RELEASE TRIGGER
These are applied in LONG NOTES, TREMOLOS, and TRILLS. Instruments marked with the extension +RS have
release samples added which are triggered on releasing the key, thus providing a natural release instead of the quick
fading typical for an envelope release.
0-COMBINATIONS
Combinations of instruments with full samples with their counterparts with removed attack.
COMBINATIONS
Combinations of different BASIC INSTRUMENTS via key switch and/or modulation switch.
Two-instrument combinations are marked with a + sign between the instrument names, combinations of more than
two instruments may either be marked with _all or a designation for the range, e.g. TU_aT1_120-140 contains
single tuba upbeats with 120, 130, and 140 BPM.
COMBINATIONS SLOW, MEDIUM, FAST, ALL

This category concerns harp glissandos, which are subdivided into different speeds.
Controllers
In the programming of the Vienna Symphonic Library, we consciously avoided controller functions that cannot be
handled via keyboard. This means that we use only key switch and modwheel as controllers for instrument changes or
dynamic layers. Our Performance Tool will take over a lot of the functions you would otherwise have to implement by
hand.
The system has been kept consistent throughout the library, so that similar instruments will have the same structure: a
combination of crescendo and diminuendo instruments will always be controlled with the modwheel, while e.g.
crescendos with different tone lengths will employ key switches.
The Vienna Symphonic Library websites User Area will offer the complete articulation file structure for download. Not
only will the factory settings continuously improve; we also want to offer alternatives like e.g. artfiles optimized for
breath controllers, for live play etc.

The orchestra

There are several ways of setting up an orchestra, depending on the era of the piece played, the type of the piece and
the instruments it requires, and even on the conductors preferences. The figure below shows one of the more common
setups, which can be taken as a guideline for the mixdown of a composition, when you position the instruments in the
stereo field and add reverb according to the size of the concert hall you want your piece to be played in.

1 Violin ensemble (14)
Description
The violin as the smallest of the stringed instruments is the soprano instrument of the violin family (violin, viola, cello).
Since the Baroque era the strings the most homogenous of all instrument groups have been the heart of the
orchestra. Violins are always used in chorus and divided into 1st and 2nd violins. Modern string sections use 14 first
and 12 second violins (in especially large orchestras 16 first and 14 second violins).
Range and notation

The violin has a range of G3A7 (harmonic D8).
It is a non-transposing instrument and notated in treble clef.
Sound characteristics
Full, lively, singing, eloquent, introspective, supernatural, sensuous, lustrous, bright, metallic, vibrant, clear, glassy,
flute-like, shrill, brilliant, sparkling, calm, thin, whistling, round, pure, muffled, solemn, austere, dark, muted, open,
sustaining, rough, wafting, soft, sweet, merry, dancing, veiled.
The 1st violins generally play the higher part, which is usually the main melody. The 2nd violins often play the part of
lower sisters: they often play an octave below, darkening the overall timbre.
Combination with other instruments

All stringed instruments form a group with a homogeneous overall sound and perform tasks ranging from the subtlest
tonal effects to the most eloquent reinforcements of sound and from the greatest possible tonal compactness to the
greatest possible diversity. The violins pizzicato blends well with the harp.
Woodwinds generally speaking provide the strings with more volume and power, while the strings make the woodwinds
more mellow, especially when playing in unison.
The tonal blend with brass instruments is not so good; the horn achieves the best blend of the brass section with the
violins, especially in combination with the cellos.

2 Viola ensemble (10)
Description
The viola is the alto instrument of the violin family. It is constructed using the same components as the violin, the only
difference being the larger size. Its stately and dark timbre contrasts sharply with that of the violin.
The modern symphony orchestra usually uses 10 (in large orchestras 12) violas.
Range and notation

The viola has a range from C3A6 (harmonic E7).
The viola is a non-transposing instrument notated in alto clef, and in treble clef from the second octave above middle
C. The violas range lies mainly between C3 and G5, that is, within the alto clefs domain.
Dark, stately, reedy, warm, distinctive, full, lively, singing, eloquent, introspective, sensuous, round, muffled, solemn,
austere, muted, rough, wafting, veiled, sonorous, powerful, robust.
The sound of the violas as a group achieves an austere charm which is used for melodic tasks at dramatic turning
points, especially in the opera orchestra.

The doubling of voices in the middle register is one of the violas customary roles as it is acting as an intermediary
between the violins and the cellos.
Woodwinds provide the strings with more volume and power, while the strings make the woodwinds more mellow,
especially when playing in unison. In high registers and played forte or fortissimo the viola is perfectly capable of
matching the woodwinds for intensity and acerbity of sound, an effect that is intensified when the groups play in
combination.
The combination of violas and the majority of the brass produces a relatively homogeneous sound.

Description
The cello is the tenor and bass instrument of the violin family.
In the 19th century the cello advanced along with the violin to become the most important bowed instrument for solo
works.

The cello has a range from C2A5 (harmonic A7).
It is a non-transposing instrument notated mainly in bass clef. Because of its huge range tenor and treble clef are also
used.
Mellow, warm, sonorous, full, clear, brilliant, vibrant, singing, bright, lustrous, stately, lyrical, cantabile, thick, weighty,
powerful, silky, lively, incisive, eloquent, transcendental, supernatural, sensuous, calm, round, pure, muffled, dark,
open, sustaining, solemn, wafting, gentle, sweet, veiled.
The cello possesses a wide variety of differing tone colors and means of expression, ranging from the calm and solemn
in the lower register to bursts of passion in the uppermost register. It is something of a split personality: one the hand it
plays the part of the solid, reliable bass instrument; on the other hand it aspires to the passion of a heroic tenor.

The cello has a particularly good blend with all the other instruments in the orchestra.
Its tasks range from performing the bass part to expansive melody lines in the tenor register. Cellos playing in octaves
with double basses is a classic combination.
Woodwinds provide the strings with more volume and power, while the strings make the woodwinds more mellow.
Oboe and bassoon accentuate the bright and clear properties of the cellos sound, while the clarinet makes the cello
sound more mellow.
The blend with the brass instruments is strongly influenced by the playing technique employed by the strings (pizzicato,
col legno). The combination of cellos and horns played piano is particularly pleasing.

Description
The double bass is the contrabass instrument of the string section and, with its sloping shoulders and its string tuning to
fourths, is not strictly speaking a member of the violin family (violin, viola, cello).

Range and notation

The double bass has a range from B0G4 (harmonic G6).
It is the only transposing stringed instrument. Because of its deep pitch, notation for it is written an octave higher than it
sounds, in bass clef.
Heavy, weighty, dark, weightless, wafting, somber, earthy, resonant, rasping, broad, hollow, dull, mighty, menacing,
violent, mellow, sustaining, aspirate.
Like the tuba, the double bass lacks the high partials due to its great size, although the first six partials are especially
prominent which makes the timbre dark, broad and dull.

The double bass, as the fundamental bass instrument, is capable of particularly good tonal combinations with all the
other instruments, especially with its smaller partner the cello and all harmony instruments as well. Its powerful sound
must provide a solid foundation which can support the sound structure and with which the other instruments blend. On
the other hand it is also capable of playing melody lines, solo lines which stand out.
The double bass blends well with the low woodwinds (bass clarinet and contrabassoon) and brass instruments (horn,
trombone, tuba).

Description
The harp, a stringed and plucked instrument, is one of the oldest and most widespread musical instruments known to
man.
In modern orchestral and concert playing the double-action pedal harp has established itself, a model with 7 pedals
and 47 strings tuned diatonically in Cb major.
Range and notation

The harp has a range from Cb1G#7.
As with the piano harp notation is written on two staves and is non-transposing. The lower staff is in bass clef, the upper
in treble clef. If required by the register both staves can be in the same clef, either bass or treble.
Gentle, metallic, blurring, resonant, short, hard, drifting, full-sounding, rushing, clear, brilliant, glittering, flowing, dull,
mellow, sharp, crystal clear, reverberating, splashing, cascading.
The full-sounding notes of the lower register resonate for a long time.
A brilliant and warm timbre is characteristic of the middle register. Notes resonate for one or two seconds. It is chiefly in
this register that chords, harmony, arpeggios, glissandos and melody lines are played.
The high register has bright, hard and penetrating notes that die away very quickly.

The harp combines well with all orchestra groups.
It has the function of fleshing out the sound and is often treated as a filling-in instrument. The bottom strings are often
used to play the bass voice. The weaving of delicate harmonic sound backdrops (arpeggio technique) is another of its
quintessential tasks. In addition, it is the various types of harp glissando that lend the undulations of the orchestra the
shimmer of brilliance which is one of the most fundamental sound experiences of them all.
The harp achieves a good blend with the strings because they are related to each other as stringed instruments. With
the woodwind, chords in unison with the harp are one of the key combinations.

Description

Description
The oboe is a woodwind instrument in the soprano register. Because of its mouthpiece, consisting of two reeds, the
oboe is classified as a double-reed instrument.
Modern woodwind sections usually use two oboes (and one English horn). Since the 19th century the oboe in the
orchestra has had a very special role: it plays the tuning note.
Range and notation

The oboes range is from Bb3G6 (A6).
The oboe is a non-transposing instrument notated in treble clef.
Clear, bright, penetrating, acerbic, keen, biting, rasping, reedy, powerful, robust, full, insistent.
The oboes low notes sound thick, heavy and melancholy.
The middle register is the region most often used: bright, forceful, reedy. Many oboe solos make use of this area and its
manifold means of expression: cheerful rural scenes, idyllic pastoral romance, light-footed exuberance, tranquility,
grief, lamentation, loneliness and yearning.
The higher they go the less volume, substance and expressiveness the oboes notes have. The highest notes (G6 and
A6) are biting and shrill.

Like all woodwinds the oboe achieves the best blend with other woodwinds and stringed instruments. It makes the
strings sound more intense, while losing some of its own keenness. One of the most common sound combinations of
all is the oboe and violin played in unison, since both are excellent melody instruments.
From the brass instruments the trumpet and horn are well suited for playing in combination with the oboe, the
trombones only blend when played muted.

Description
The clarinet in Bb, a soprano woodwind instrument, is the main member of the big clarinet family. Due to its
modulatory capabilities it became the most important wind instrument in the Romantic orchestra in the 19th century
along with the horn. Since the classical period it has been customary to use two clarinets, the modern orchestra
additionally uses a small clarinet (or a bass clarinet).
Range and notation

The clarinet in Bb has a range from D3Bb6 (to G6 in orchestral playing).
The written compass of all clarinets ranges from E3 to C7. The Bb clarinet sounds a major second lower than notated.
Rich, mellow, warm, gentle, melodic, vocal, round, lustrous, brilliant, bright, throaty, penetrating, dark, menacing,
dramatic, explosive, incisive, expressive, shrill, reedy, caressing, pale, lively.
The clarinets ability to play smooth and expressive legatos makes it the ideal instrument for the performance of
evocative cantilenas.
The notes within the compass from A4F6 (clarinet register) are used most often. They sound brilliant, lustrous, bright
and compact. Due to their vocal character they have frequently been compared to the human soprano voice. They
express a range of emotions from tender sentiment to bursts of passion, from seductive sensuality to desperate longing,
or from cat-like cunning to demonic malevolence.
Lower notes have a dark, full, mellow and warm timbre, especially in piano. Higher notes than A6 are seldom required
because they no longer have the clarinets typically velvety sound.

Like all the woodwinds the clarinet is very well suited for combinations with other instruments. Its sound is adaptable
enough to produce an excellent tonal blend with all instrument groups. A particularly good blend is achieved with the
horn.
Especially in opera the clarinet is often used in combination with the soprano or alto voices.

Description
The bassoon is a woodwind instrument in the tenor and bass register. It is a double-reed instrument like the oboe. Due
to the U-shaped bend of the bassoon tube however it sounds mellow and velvety and lacks the penetrating and brilliant
shawm-like sound.
Modern woodwind sections usually use two bassoons.
Range and notation

The bassoon has a range from Bb1Eb5 (forced up to F5).
It is a non-transposing instrument (actual pitches are notated). Notation is in bass clef, with tenor clef being used for the
higher registers. Notation in treble clef is rare.
Mellow, gentle, velvety, mild, sonorous, warm, smooth, picturesque, tense, active, penetrating, plaintive, long, light,
delicate, full, round, slender, narrow, sensitive.
The differences between the registers are very pronounced, which is one of the instruments most striking characteristics:
full and sonorous in the lower register, slender, elegant and melodious in the middle and narrow and compressed in
the upper register.
The bassoons low notes with their substantial, compact and unobtrusive sound are often used as a bass foundation.
The notes of the middle register sound sonorous, rich, clear and stately. They possess a wide range of expression; they
can be gently caressing or sharply austere, merry and bright or melancholy and despondent. They are equally well
suited for mysterious, demonic and eerie effects.
In all its registers, the notes of the bassoon especially staccato notes are well suited for the performance of
humorous, comic effects and the depiction of musical caricatures.

The fascination of the bassoons sound lies in two qualities:
On the one hand, it achieves a good blend with most of the other instruments in the orchestra, as does the horn; This
capability to blend with the sound of other instruments allows the bassoon to merge with the overall sound of the
orchestra as an unobtrusive bass voice.
On the other hand the bassoons sound is also clearly defined and therefore suitable for thematic and solo tasks.

Description
The trumpet is a brass wind instrument with a cup shaped mouthpiece. Along with the trumpet in Bb, the trumpet in C is
most commonly used today.
In orchestral works, between two and four trumpets are usually called for today.
Range and notation

The trumpet in C has a standard range from F#3C6 (in jazz up to F6 and higher).
Music for modern trumpets is written in treble clef. The trumpet in C is a non-transposing instrument, the sound is as
written.
Metallic, bright (but also dark in the lower register), intense, heroic, brilliant, powerful and stately.
In its low register the trumpet is well-suited as a metallic, dark, precise and agile middle voice in the orchestra and as
such offers an effective contrast to the soft horns in the same register.
In the middle register the instruments sound comes into its own: brilliant, full, rounded, magnificent. A metallic
brilliance that pervades the entire orchestra and cannot be achieved by any other instrument.
The highest notes sound bright, shrill, penetrating and vivid.

The trumpet blends well with other brass instruments. In chords the trumpet and the trombone produce the typical brass
sound.
In combination with the woodwinds and strings dynamic levels must be balanced carefully to ensure that the trumpet
doesnt overrule the other instruments. Trumpets and clarinets in unison produce a clearer, brighter sound than any
other combination.

Description
The French horn in F is a brass wind instrument with a funnel-shaped mouthpiece.
In the 19th century it became the most important wind instrument in the Romantic orchestra. The brass section of the
modern orchestra usually uses four horns, especially large sections may even have six or eight horns.
Range and notation

The horn in F has a range from B1F5.
It is notated in F; in bass clef and treble clef it is written a fifth higher than it sounds.
Full, warm, velvety, clear, bright, intense, heroic, distant, mellow, metallic, powerful, expressive, resounding, sonorous.
Low notes are most effective played piano, when forced they take on a slightly rough tone. Ideal for the performance of
thematic tasks.
The notes in the middle register sound mellow, full and resounding.
The high notes are soft as velvet, bright and very intense, brilliant. This characteristic horn sound develops best around
C5.

The horn blends with all the instrument groups in the orchestra better than any other instrument.
Played together with other brass instruments the horn loses its mellow euphony, for cup and funnel-shaped
mouthpieces mutually cancel out their characteristic sounds.
Of the woodwinds, the clarinet and bassoon blend very well with the horn.
Strings combined with horns blend into a homogeneous overall sound.

Description
The tenor trombone in Bb is, like the trumpet, played with a cup-shaped mouthpiece. The trombone is the oldest brass
wind instrument with a chromatic scale thanks to its slide, which distinguishes it from all other brass instruments.
The trombone section in the modern orchestra uses four trombones, usually two tenor and two tenor-bass trombones.
Range and notation

The tenor trombone has a range from E2F5.
Notation in the tenor (higher register) and bass clefs (lower register), no transposition.
Brassy, brilliant, powerful, overpowering, solid, tense, penetrating, dramatic, hard, full, sinister, soft, round.
The low notes sound threatening when played forte, mysterious and full when played piano. They are used for weighty
and portentous themes and as bass in harmony sequences.
The middle register sounds metallic, mighty, sometimes blaring and heroic when played forte.
In the upper register the sound becomes more brilliant and can reach sweeping intensity. The mellowness increases.

Good tonal blend with the other brass instruments.
The combination of deep woodwinds with the trombone principally serves the reinforcement of sound.
The combination with strings does not generally produce homogeneity. The trombone supports and fleshes out the
deep strings.

Description
The bass tuba is a bass and contrabass instrument. Together with the contrabass tuba it is the largest and lowest-
pitched brass instrument not only in the orchestra, where the tuba player sits together with the trombone section, but
also in wind band and military music.
The brass section of the modern symphony orchestra has one tuba, especially large brass sections use two tubas.
Range and notation

The bass tuba has a range from D1G4.
Music for the bass tuba is generally non-transposing and written in bass clef.
Round, smooth, calm, velvety, hearty, robust, unobtrusive, ponderous, sustaining, gentle, soft, soothing.
The overall effect of the low notes is soft and unobtrusive. The tone is not penetrating, but nevertheless projects very
well.
The middle register is very full-sounding in soft legato phrases. It is the notes within this compass that are used most
often.
A very loud and powerful tone is possible in the high register which can hold its own in tutti passages.

One of the principal tasks of the bass tuba is the doubling of other bass instruments. Especially in tutti passages its role
is to provide a firm fundamental bass.
The bass tuba plays bass to the brass section, often doubling or replacing the fourth trombone. It also shares the bass
voice with the contrabassoon and the double-bass. With the high woodwinds and strings no tonal blend is possible.
