First Quarter

I. Content Standard

The learner demonstrates understanding of: pre-colonial Philippine literature as a means of connecting to the past; various reading styles; ways
of determining word meaning; the sounds of English and the prosodic features of speech; and correct subject-verb agreement.

II. Performance Standard


The learner transfers learning by: showing appreciation for the literature of the past; comprehending texts using appropriate reading styles;
participating in conversations using appropriate context-dependent expressions; producing English sounds correctly using the prosodic features
of speech effectively in various situations; and observing correct subject-verb agreement.

III. Learning Competency


Knowledge:
The students will know
1. the features of Philippine ancient literature (myths, legends, etc.);
2. nouns and its kinds;
3. the correct production of vowel and consonant sounds;
4. the distinction among English vowel sounds;
5. the predominance of colloquial and idiomatic expressions in oral communication;
6. correct pronoun- antecedent agreement;
7. correct subject- verb agreement;
8. structural analysis to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words;
9. the strategies to understand character traits;
10. the differences between skimming and scanning reading.

Skills:

The students will be able to

1. identify the distinguishing features of myths and legends when they encounter these texts;
2. explain the importance of literature as a means of connecting to a significant past;
3. use appropriate reading style for ones purpose;
4. explain how a selection may be influenced by culture, history, environment, or other factors;
5. unlock idioms by using different strategies;
6. use the different kinds of nouns in meaningful sentences through writing a narrative;
7. draw a distinction among critical vowel sounds;
8. produce the different vowel sounds correctly;
9. produce sentences with pronoun-antecedent and subject- verb agreement.

IV. Enduring Understanding


1. Early Philippine narratives reflect our ancestors efforts to explain the origin of things and show the culture and beliefs of their society.
2. Nouns are one of the eight basic parts of speech, are used in all subjects, and can be classified as abstract, common, collective, plural, and
possessive.
3. Producing the vowel sounds correctly makes ones speech more understandable.
4. Ones familiarity of idiomatic expressions facilitates understanding of texts.
5. A literary piece may have been influenced by culture, history, environment, or other factors.
6. Observing pronoun- antecedent and subject verb agreement makes our sentences more meaningful and understandable.
7. Writers use different strategies to reveal the traits of characters.
8. An ability to discriminate vowel sounds can contribute to the competency to perceive, interpret and evaluate spoken English.
9. Knowing character traits is important not only in reading but also in life.
10. Skimming and scanning are reading skills used in our everyday lives.
