MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL

"It can happen. It does happen.

But it can't happen if you quit." Lauren Dane.

We are what we repeatedly do.

Excellence then is not an act, but a habit. Aristotle

It gives me immense pleasure to pen a few words for our e-bulletin. At the onset I would like to thank the
last years editors and congratulate the newly selected editors for the current year.

Our first consideration is always in the best interest of the students. Our goal is to promote academic
excellence and continuous improvement.

I believe that excellence in education is aided by creating a learning environment in which all learners are
supported in maximizing their potential and talents. Education needs to focus on personalized learning
and instruction, while promoting an education system that is impartial, universally accessible, and meeting
the needs of all students.

It is of paramount importance that our learners have sufficient motivation and encouragement in order to
achieve their aims. We are all very proud of you, our students, and your accomplishments and look
forward to watching as you put your mark on the profession in the years ahead.

The call of the time is to progress, not merely to move ahead. Our progressive Management is looking
forward and wants our Institute to flourish as a Post Graduate Institute of Excellence. Steps are taken in
this direction and fruits of these efforts will be received by our students in the near future. Our Teachers
are committed and dedicated for the development of the institution by imparting their knowledge and play
the role of facilitator as well as role model to our students.

The Pharmacy profession is thriving with a multitude of possibilities, opportunities and positive
challenges. At Guru Nanak Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, our focus is on holistic
needs of our students.

I am confident that the students of GNIPST will recognize all the possibilities, take full advantage of the
opportunities and meet the challenges with purpose and determination.

Excellence in Education is not a final destination, it is a continuous walk. I welcome you to join us on
this path.

My best wishes to all.

HISTORICAL ARTICLE
Sigmund Freud
Sigmund Freud (6 May 1856 23 September 1939), physiologist,
medical doctor, psychologist, was an influential thinker of the
twentieth century. Freuds innovative treatment of human actions,
dreams, and indeed of cultural object s as invariably possessing
implicit symbolic significance has proven to be extraordinarily
productive, and has had immense implications for a wide variety of
fields, including anthropology, semiotics, and artistic creativity
and appreciation in addition to psychology. However, Freuds
most important and frequently re-iterated claim, that with
psychoanalysis he had invented a new science of the mind, remains
the subject of much disapproval and controversy.
Contributions and Achievements:
Freud conceptualized the mind symbolically as an ancient ruin
which had to been uncovered much like an archeologist would
discover the treasures of an ancient civilization. This gave birth to
Psychoanalysis. Freuds account of the sexual genesis and nature of
neuroses led him naturally to develop a clinical treatment for
treating such disorders. This has become so influential today that
when people speak of psychoanalysis they frequently refer
exclusively to the clinical treatment. The object of psychoanalytic
treatment may be said to be a form of self-understanding, once this
is acquired, it is largely up to the patient, in consultation with the
analyst to determine how he shall handle this newly-acquired
understanding of the unconscious forces which motivate him.
Freud became more and more sophisticated in his technique of
psychoanalysis, and he became particularly adept at using his

patients biased impressions of him to help the patient to discover

the origins of the unconscious memory which led to the symptoms
from which they suffered.
Freuds theories and research methods have always been
controversial. He and psychoanalysis have been criticized in very
extreme terms. For an often-quoted example, Peter Medawar, a
Nobel Prize winning immunologist, said in 1975 that
psychoanalysis is the most stupendous intellectual confidence
trick of the twentieth century. However, Freud has had a
tremendous impact on psychotherapy. Many psychotherapists
follow Freuds approach to an extent, even if they reject his
theories.
The contemporary scientific climate in which Freud lived and
worked should be taken into consideration. When the towering
scientific figure of nineteenth century science, Charles Darwin,
published his revolutionary Origin of Species, Freud was four years
old. The evolutionary principle completely altered the existing
conception of man, whereas before man had been seen as a being
different in nature to the members of the animal kingdom by virtue
of his possession of an immortal soul, he was now seen as being
part of the natural order, different from non-human animals only in
degree of structural difficulty.
This made it possible and reasonable for the first time to treat man
as an object of scientific investigation, and to imagine of the vast
and varied range of human behavior, and the motivational causes
from which it springs, as being amenable in principle to scientific
explanation. Much of the creative work done in a whole variety of
diverse scientific fields over the next century was to be inspired by
and derive nourishment from this new world-view which Freud,
with his enormous esteem for science, accepted implicitly.
Freud also followed Plato in his account of the nature of mental
health or psychological well-being, which he saw as the
establishment of a melodic relationship between the three
elements which constitute the mind. A key concept introduced by
Freud was that the mind possesses a number of defense

mechanisms to attempt to prevent conflicts from becoming too

acute, such as repression (pushing conflicts back into the
unconscious), sublimation (channeling the sexual drives into the
achievement socially acceptable goals, in art, science, poetry, etc.),
fixation (the failure to progress beyond one of the developmental
stages), and regression (a return to the behavior characteristic of
one of the stages).
Published works:
Freuds work is preserved in a 23 volume set called The Standard
Edition of the Complete Psychological Works of Sigmund Freud.
Some of Freuds most interesting works are The Interpretation of
Dreams, his own favorite, The Psychopathology of Everyday Life,
about Freudian slips and other day-to-day oddities, Totem and
Taboo, Freuds views on our beginnings, Civilization and Its
Discontents, his pessimistic commentary on modern society, and
The Future of an Illusion, on religion. All are a part of The
Standard Edition, but all are available as separate paperbacks as
well. This renowned man died of the cancer of the mouth and jaw
that he had been suffering since 20 years of his life.

Popular class of drugs reverse potentially
harmful genetic changes from heart disease:
(30th June, 2017)
Beta blockers are commonly used world-wide to treat a variety of
cardiovascular conditions, such as arrhythmias and heart failure.
Scientists have known for decades that the medications work by
slowing the heart rate and reducing the force of contraction --
lessening the burden of work carried out by the heart. However,
new research has now shown that these drugs also reverse a
number of potentially detrimental genetic changes associated with
heart disease.

New clues found to common respiratory virus:

(30th June, 2017)
Scientists have solved the structure of a protein that helps a
common respiratory virus evade the immune system. The team has
identified critical parts of the protein that could be targeted with
drugs or vaccines, opening up the possibility of preventing or
treating an infection that sickens thousands of babies and elderly
people every year.
Findings could potentially improve prognosis of
infants with rare liver disease: (30th June,
2017)
Scientists have described the mechanical principles adopted by
liver cells as they remove excess bile during obstructive
cholestasis.
Colon cancer nuclear pore dynamics are captured
by HS-AFM: (30th June, 2017)
One of the key reasons for cancer mortality is caused by the highly
invasive behavior of cancer cells, which is often due to aggressive
metastasis. Metastasis is facilitated by various growth factors and
cytokines secreted from cells of the immune system, which operate
through various signaling pathways.
Miniature technology, big hope for disease
detection: (30th June, 2017)
Researchers have developed a simple printing method to create
effective disease detection tools.
Liquid biopsies: A non-invasive look at treatment
response: (30th June, 2017)
A new study shows that so-called "liquid biopsies", blood tests
that detect circulating tumour DNA (ctDNA), may not only sound
an early alert that a treatment's effect is diminishing, but may also
help explain why -sometimes offering clues about what to do next.

Exposure to cardiovascular risk factors linked

with arterial distensibility in adolescence: (30th
June, 2017)
The longitudinal study on children and adolescents is unique
worldwide. The study shows that cardiovascular risk factors, such
as overweight, high blood pressure, low-density lipoprotein (LDL)
cholesterol and insulin resistance, are associated with arterial
distensibility in adolescence.
Promising new therapeutic approach for
debilitating bone disease: (29th June, 2017)
A new type of therapeutic could greatly reduce bone disease in
patients with the bone cancer, multiple myeloma. Multiple
myeloma is a cancer that develops in bone, causing progressive
bone destruction, bone fractures, and often devastating pain.
Unlike existing treatments, this new approach rebuilds bone
tissue, making it more resistant to fractures. This treatment could
greatly reduce the debilitating pain of bone damage, transforming
the prognosis for myeloma patients.
New opioid use in older adults with COPD
associated with increased risk of cardiac death:
(29th June, 2017)
Older adults with COPD who recently started using opioids have
an increased risk of coronary artery disease-related death
compared to non-opioid users, researchers have found. Among
these patients, new opioid use is associated with a 215 percent
increase in coronary artery disease-related death for long-term care
residents and an 83 percent increase in coronary artery disease-
related death for those who lived at home compared to non-opioid
users, according to the study.

FDA allows marketing of test to aid in the
detection of certain leukemias and lymphomas
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration allowed marketing of
ClearLLab Reagents (T1, T2, B1, B2, M), the first agency authorized
test for use with flow cytometry to aid in the detection of several
leukemias and lymphomas, including chronic leukemia, acute
leukemia, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, myeloma, myelodysplastic
syndrome (MDS) and myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN).
This represents a major step forward for the hematology-oncology
community, said Alberto Gutierrez, Ph.D., Director of the Office
of In Vitro Diagnostics and Radiological Health in the FDAs
Center for Devices and Radiological Health. Laboratories and
health care professionals now have access to an FDA-validated test
that provides consistent results to aid in the diagnoses of these
serious cancers.
According to the National Cancer Institute, leukemia is a cancer of
the blood that originates in immature blood cells (also called
leukocytes), which crowd out the healthy blood cells in the bone
marrow. Leukemia occurs most often in adults older than 55 years,
but it is also the most common cancer in children younger than 15
years. Lymphoma is a cancer that begins in the cells of the lymph
system, a part of the immune system that helps the body fight
infection and disease.
The ClearLLab test is used to detect cancerous cells in blood, bone
marrow and lymph nodes, and it also provides laboratories and
clinicians with information about what type of leukemia or

lymphoma is present. It works by marking proteins found on the

surface of cells with fluorescent dyes for further analysis on an
instrument known as a flow cytometer.
The FDA reviewed data for the ClearLLab test through the de novo
premarket review pathway, a regulatory pathway for novel, low-
to-moderate-risk devices that are not substantially equivalent to
an already legally marketed device. Its authorization was
supported by a study designed to demonstrate the tests
performance, which was conducted on 279 samples at four,
independent clinical sites. The study compared the tests results to
alternative detection methods used by the clinical sites. The study
showed that the results of the test aligned with the study sites
final diagnosis 93.4 percent of the time and correctly detected that
there was a cancer presence (i.e., cancer abnormality) 84.2 percent
of the time.
Along with this authorization, the FDA is establishing criteria,
called special controls, which clarify the agencys expectations in
assuring the tests accuracy, reliability and clinical relevance. These
special controls, when met along with general controls, provide
reasonable assurance of safety and effectiveness for the ClearLLab
Reagents and similar tests used to aid in the diagnosis of leukemias
and lymphomas. The special controls also describe the least
burdensome regulatory pathway for future developers of similar
diagnostic tests for leukemias and lymphomas.
Users of the new test are advised that results must be reviewed by
a trained professional.
The FDA granted market authorization of ClearLLab Reagents (T1,
T2, B1, B2, M) to Beckman Coulter, Inc.
The FDA, an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and
Human Services, protects the public health by assuring the safety,
effectiveness, and security of human and veterinary drugs, vaccines
and other biological products for human use, and medical devices.
The agency also is responsible for the safety and security of our
