Dejan Ognjanovic

Attitudes Towards Horror Genre in Serbian Literary and Film Theory

S u m m a r y

The problems of studying horror genre in Serbian language are rooted in cer
tain local cultural and historical specificities. Because of the dominance of realistic
discourse in the Serbian literary theory and practice, dealing with non-realistic (fan
tasy) literature, including horror, used to have more pronounced negative connotati
ons than, say, in Anglo-American theory. This is particularly reflected in relegating
all genre fiction to trivial literature, or in a variety of strategies which deny or pro
blematize the fantastic, supernatural and unexplained. Also, the study of specific
features of horror literature has not been recognized as a separate issue, perhaps
because of the lack of sufficient expression of this kind of prose tradition in Serbian
language. As a result of this, rare attempts to define the genre in the Serbian theory
generally suffer from the false, dubious aesthetic and false allegations in view of
literary history, which leads to ill-judged applications of the Marxist aesthetics or
inappropriate moralizing prejudice to this genre, with no signs of awareness of the
achievements of foreign scholars who studied motifs, themes and poetics of the hor
ror genre. The paper points out the relevant works in the Serbian language in which
one can find traces of serious dealing with horror and points out the valuable, but
also problematic findings in these works.
