 PHILIPPINE COUNCIL FOR QUALITY ASSURANCE IN CLINICAL LABORATORIES
I. COURSE DESCRIPTION
One of the growing public
health and economic burdens in the
country and even worldwide is
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD).
With the current population of over
100 million Filipinos, it has been
estimated that almost 2.2 % of
Filipino adults are inflicted with CKD
and about 100 Filipinos per million
population annually develop End
Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).
ESRD is considered the most severe
form of CKD. What seemingly looks
like a small percentage of CKD
cases deteriorating into ESRD, its
management which includes dialysis
and transplantation have posed a
very high financial and emotional
burden to the patients, their
caregivers and families.
Over the years, serum creatinine
has become the most widely used
marker in estimating GFR. Issues on
the testing of creatinine, ie:
type/principle of method used, quality
assurance, and external proficiency
testing beset the laboratories. The
reporting of estimated creatinine
clearance as recommended by the
Kidney Disease Improving Global
Outcomes (KDIGO) is among the
new challenges faced by clinical
laboratories these days.

STANDARDIZATION OF TESTS IN DETECTING CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE
As an important part of the
healthcare team, the laboratory
professionals must first fully
appreciate what the burden of the
disease is, the current state and
issues related to CKD, and the
testing challenges they must face in
order to get and give a better
perspective and understand the
bigger picture of multidisciplinary
patient care. The new and added
knowledge as well as the soft and
hard skills to be gained from this
course will pave the way to elevating
the quality of testing, and the
accuracy and precision of test
reports. It will also boost the
confidence of the laboratory
professionals to be appropriately
responsive to the needs of our
clinicians and patients, in a timely
manner for best health outcomes.
The course will give the
participants the right tools in
upholding the quality of renal testing
in the laboratory through in-depth
discourse on significance of the
disease, the methodology, quality
assurance and external proficiency
testing. This holistic approach given
by experts in the field of nephrology,
clinical pathology, and patient care
will help standardize the way
creatinine and other renal tests are
performed in the Philippines and
make it at par with global
benchmarks.
II. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the seminar-
workshop, the participants will:
1. Describe current tests requested
to help diagnose CKD;
2.Distinguish the different methods
used in testing;
3. Discover the recommendations
of KDIGO regarding the choice of
the formula to be used for
estimating the GFR and the
accurate measurement of serum
creatinine;
3. Report accurately estimated
glomerular filtration rate ( eGFR )
to better guide Clinicians in the
evaluation of patients with
compromised kidney function;
4. Identify the factors affecting the
quality of test from pre-examination
to post-examination phases.
5. Demonstrate the importance of
adhering to internationally
recognized standards in the
measurement of creatinine level;
6. Employ the standards in
creatinine testing at work to relate
with quality assurance and external
proficiency testing.
