1) Study yourself Liquid crystal polymers and submit assignment in Tute class.
2) Explain polymerization. Distinguish between the following
a. Condensation polymerization and addition polymerization.
b. Thermoplastic and thermosetting polymers.

polymerization as 10,000.
4) The number average molecular weight of a polystyrene is 10 5 gm/mol .Find its number

(COOH- CH2- CH2- CH2- CH2-COOH)to produce a linear chain structure of polyester
according to condensation process. What is the mass of resulting polymer?
7) The density and associated percent crystallinity for two polyethylene materials are as
follows:
(gm/cm3) Crystallinity (%)
0.965 76.8
0.925 46.4

(b) Determine the percent crystallinity of a specimen having a density of 0.950 gm/cm3.
8) Compute the density of NaCl crystal using ANa = 22.99 gm/mol, Acl = 35.45 gm/mol; rNa
= 0.1 nm, rCl = 0.181 nm.
9) Define glass transition temperature. Explain the phase transition behavior from liquid to
glass, liquid to semi-crystalline and liquid to crystalline using appropriate diagram of
specific volume vs temperature plots.
10) The two equivalent mer units of ethylene are contained in a unit cell of totally

condition, it deviates from Hooks law? Explain your answer usng stress - strain curve.
12) What should be the cation to anoin radius ratio (rC/rA)for octahedral structural stability.
What happens if this ratio changes. Is it possible to have structural transition on
changing this ratio?
