2nd Annual Photo Contest
It was a splash that made a
splash. Jennifer Keims beau-
tiful photo of a wave splashing
a bulkhead, with a sunset and
the Breezy Point Lighthouse
in the background, captured
the kind of magic that was
too irresistible for judges not
to award Jennifer the grand
prize of $500, in the second
annual Rockaway Times Pho-
to Contest.
The final round of judging
was held at Caracas on the
boardwalk and Beach 106th
Street on Sunday, July 2. Fif-
teen photos made it to this
last day of judging and all
poster-sized pics were dis-
played on the concessions
picnic tables.

es had the tough choice of se-
lecting a winner.

The Rockaway Times
Guide) earned top runner-up
and with the honor came two
dinner cruise tickets courtesy
of Hornblower, the NYC Ferry
operator. Greg DeBoer took
third prize and a free 30-day
ferry pass.
The contest drew more
than 1,000 photos and 30 of
the best were made into du-
rable posters and affixed to
the boardwalk for beachgo-
ers to admire. The Rockaway
Times got generous help from
the NYC Parks Department,
the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway
Parks Conservancy, the Rock-
away Artists Alliance, and
Hornblower/NYCFerry, and
it couldnt have happened
without John Cori, who or-
ganized the whole thing.

A Patriotic Parade
The beach blocks from New-
port Avenue to the beach wall
on Beach 131st Street held their
27th Annual Fourth of July Rag-
Tag Parade. A large crowd par-
ticipated in the festivities. The
parade began with a reading of
the names of all the neighbors
who perished on 9/11/01 and
11/12/01, and was then pro-
ceeded by a march to the beach.
Vincent Murphy rallied all the
participants by playing patri-
otic music as the participants
marched down 131st Street
from the corner of Newport
Ave and 131st Street. Six-year-
old Keira Coyne led the parade
group to the beach wall. Steve
Cannon followed Keira with
his car loaded with enthusiastic

participants.
The marchers were greeted by
a cheering throng of neighbors
at Old Glory Plaza. Parade
Chairman Hank Iori greeted
everyone. The Pledge of Alle-
giance was led by Kristen Fran-
chuck. Updates on the happen-
ings on the block were reported
and several new neighbors were
welcomed to the block, includ-
ing Joe and Mary Harkins and
Kraig and Jen DeMattis.
The festivities ended as neigh-
bors shared some time saying
hello and preparing to spend
their day on the beach. An en-
joyable time was had by all and
the festivities of the day con-
tinued all day and night on the
beach!

my toilet (because I really
dont know what a soapbox is)

Most of what follows is from
an old column but running
it again is part of the annual
routine.
For you holdouts, those of
you whove passed the age of
40, certainly 50, and havent
had the personal roto-rooter,
its time. Just do it. Its plain
sensible and you can get in on
the joke.
Id like to use the expression,
all kidding aside but you
cant put all kidding aside. Its
the procedure which makes
comedians out of every pa-
tient. Gastro docs have heard
it all. Tell my wife you didnt
find my head up there.

Now I know how a mup-
pet feels. You put your left

If the two doctors Ive had
are representative of the field,
theyre among the most affa-
ble docs you could find. The
first guy I went to in Brooklyn
had a phone number of 718-
748-SHIT. Thats pretty good
marketing how could you
forget that number.
While behind me, so to speak,
he discovered a polyp and an-
nounced, Were engaged.
That meant Id be seeing him
again. But it was a good thing
it was caught when it was. This
was more than 10 years ago.
That one-time polyp got caught
and hasnt been seen since.
Of course, colonoscopies
and its weird cousin, the
colonic, have become hip
since the doctor first land-
ed on my moon. Youve got

extolling the wonders of the
colon clean out. And I gotta
say, you do feel like a million
bucks when its all over.
Just dont make plans the

will work. Be patient. If you
need something from the
store, send someone else to
get it. Once the purge starts,
you are as the door on the
airplane says, occupado.
And word to the wise, never
trust a cough, sneeze or even
a giggle. When the fun starts,
just remember its for a good
cause (and you dont even
have to start a non-profit).
Youll feel like a member of
Congress at the State of The
Union Address as you will
stand and sit about a hun-
dred times.
The next morning, the day
of the procedure, is the one
time of year people cant tell
me Im full of crap.

choice of remaining awake
and watching the exploration
on a nearby TV screen. I did it
once but it was like watching
a movie with a spring coming
through the seat. I recom-
mend the deep sleep. Theres
less embarrassment if you
suddenly get musical, so to
speak.
But in any case, just do it.
You might literally prevent
colon cancer. And by the
way, compared to the night
before, the actual procedure
is a walk in the park. And as
soon theyre done and youre
alert, you can make lunch
plans.

Brothers at the 106th Street con-
cession and Caracas supplied
free food and coffee for all who
showed up for the photo con-
test wrap up. The 15 final photos
were extraordinary and a fine re-
flection of just how talented the
people are here. It was a great
day and were glad that it will be a
great Rockaway tradition!

away Times Sandcastle Contest is
set for Sunday, July 30. You dont

Speaking of the ferry, there is
word that some people will be
left at Pier 11 so 20 people who
might be waiting at the Brook-
lyn Army Terminal can get on.
The boat holds 149 people. Pier
11 weekend crowds four and five
times that number line up to get
to Rockaway. Our suggestion:
skip Brooklyn on the weekends.
Or better, have a ferry service
Brooklyn to Rockaway only and
run it from the 69th Street pier,
not the Army Terminal. Thats
our suggestion. (And well tweet
it). And our other suggestion
is to use one of the Staten Is-
land ferries during the summer
months. And if theyre not ready
for open seas or the Rockaway
Dock couldnt support such
a large boat at least bring
back the 400-passenger vessel
SeaStreak used. Oh, and one
more: check the forecast and if it
looks like sun, run the ferry every
20 minutes on weekends.

lem house causes real fear and
anxiety for neighbors (illegal
activities, illegal overcrowding,
etc.) One particular house, 159
Beach 119th Street, has caused
neighbors to ask for community
help. Robby Schwach of Coun-
cilman Ulrichs office said evic-
tion proceedings can be sped
up if he hears from more people.

Mayor de Blasio and Governor

(Never mind his sending state
troopers to Rockaway!) Oh, and
the mayor? National ambitions?

minimal human interaction.
And for businesses, it means
more exposure and less tying
up the phones during busy
meal times. Many local busi-
nesses are utilizing smart-
phone apps and websites like
Seamless, GrubHub, Eat24
and the latest local service,
Uber Eats, to boost business
and give customers a con-
venient way to order.
Instead of looking around
for that old paper menu and
picking up the phone to call,
you simply open up your app,
select one of the local restau-
rants, pick items right from
the menu, place your pick-
up or delivery order and pay
right through the app. The
restaurant receives a direct
receipt of your order, either
through email or on a tablet,
and they prepare your food to
your exact specifications.
Many locals, especially
younger generations, uti-

Dear Editor:
Imagine a plane taking off
from JFK to LA with a stop
in Chicago. Imagine that its
first come, first served with
no assigned seating. If its a
full flight I would be quite
sure that not many people
from Chicago would arrive in
LA. The same might be said
of the residents of Sunset
Park. Airlines have assigned
seating with the possibility
of standbys getting on the
plane. This is how the ferry
should be managed.

Its like the movie theater, if
your show is sold out pick
the next available one and
punch out your ticket. If all
ferries are sold out you know
its time to take the train;
and, 2) This would avoid any
potential melee that would
be sure to happen this sum-
mer on the return line from
Rockaway.
Can you imagine crowds of
people after missing at least
one ferry, having to deal
with a crowd of kids com-
ing from a party on a hot
day after drinking all day? I
can imagine them refusing
to get in line and pushing to
the front. This could get real
bad, real fast. If it would be
too expensive for NYC Fer-
ry to change the machines,
they could give preference
to tickets bought online, and
those tickets they can moni-
tor before the sold out sign
goes up.

Lifeguards
Dear Editor:
How does this happen!?
The dunes were heavily
damaged on Sunday in the
Beach 90s and on other sec-
tions of dunes on the penin-
sula as beachgoers lounged
on them. It's obvious, some-
thing is wrong! Clear signs
are needed to tell people to
stay off the dunes. All the
money spent on dunes will
be wasted otherwise.
I do hope NYC Parks will
immediately rectify this very
troubling situation and pro-
tection of the Rockaway pen-
insulas dunes become a top
priority for NYC Parks.
This issue of damaged
fencing was specifically ad-

ling thousands of people to
other guarded swimming
beaches many blocks away is

insula, not just by the neigh-
borhoods east of Beach 116th
Street.
I sincerely hope NYC Parks
acts fast! I hope they rectify
this situation.

In 2003 the guys who created
the Spinal Tap movie pro-
duced the epic movie A Mighty
Wind that was a "mocumenta-
ry" on the folk music scene in
the sixties. The movie is pretty
funny in the same tradition as
some of the other movies that
Christopher Guest and Eugene
Levy have concocted such as
Waiting for Guffman and
Best in Show. But the mov-

tern, that is, rain or shine, there
is a mighty wind that blows
through these parts!
I have written about this Si-
rocco before, that blows across
the peninsula defying all logic,
as it seems to come at you from
every direction, especially if
you are biking. Like the Libyan
Desert that spawns these Zeph-
yrs, these winds kick up sand
(whats left of it) and backyard
umbrellas like they were Toto
in the Wizard of OZ!
Hard to figure out if this is the
new normal for Rockaway? Not
that I am complaining, because
when its 90 degrees in Manhattan
and the A train is out again; it sure
is nice to have that breeze blow-
ing here cooling things down. But
it does make bike riding and kay-
aking less fun. But maybe there
will be a silver lining and maybe
half of those coming to Rockaway
on the ferry will take a break and
give the residents a rest.
But enough about winds,
mighty and weak, lets talk about
the music part of the movie.
Sometimes its easy to mock a
guy with an acoustic guitar as
being old-fashioned, but there
is nothing old-fashioned about
what goes on at Connollys every
Tuesday night. The Open Mic,
run by the ever-present Squid-
meister Guy Nevirs, presents an
excellent line-up of local musi-
cians who just want to sing their
songs. Some are part of bands
and this Open Mic presents an
opportunity to get away from the
madness that is their band. But
others are just guys who play and
sing really well and dont have an
outlet to express their talent and
explore the chance to perform
The Rockaway Times
live. There are sometimes more
musicians than fans on Tues-
day, but it is a supportive group
that typically stays after they fin-
ish playing to listen to those that
follow. At the risk of spoiling a
fun scene, it really is a good time,
and Connollys does a great job of
hosting with the friendliest bar-
tenders in Rockaway.
Every so often, a ringer gets
thrown into the mix and you
know you are witnessing some-
thing special. Occasionally, a
harmonica player, a bass player,
or even a penny whistle player
will drift up and play with some-
one they hardly know and trans-
form a song. In addition, the
ringmaster of the evening is an
expert singer and guitarist and
kicks off each night, breaking the
proverbial ice for all the others.
So when those mighty winds
blow you from the shores, and
its a Tuesday night, float over
to Connollys for an experience
that is as close to the Greenwich
Village coffee house scene from
the 60s that you will ever get. Of
course you could rent the mov-
ie too, but that would not be as
much fun, trust me!!

BBQ FOR A HEALTHIER YOU

Barbecue season is in full
swing! Grilling can be a tasty
and lean way to cook food,
but before you fire up the grill,
check out our top tips for a BBQ
thats tasty and good for you.
Dial down the heat: Before
you slap some meat on the bar-
bie, dial down the heat. When
proteins in meat, chicken and
fish are cooked at searing tem-
peratures, carcinogenic com-
pounds called heterocyclic
amines, or HCAs, form. That
delicious crunchy char can up
your risk for colon, breast, pros-
tate and other types of cancer.
To reduce your risk, grill meat
at lower temperatures and flip
frequently to prevent excessive
charring.
Marinade: Not only will mar-
inating meat add a ton of flavor,
it also greatly reduces the for-
mation of another cancer caus-
ing compound, polycyclic aro-
matic hydrocarbons or PAHs.
Acidic marinades with vinegar
or lemon juice help tender-
ize meat and reduce PAHs, or
try basting your pork shoulder
with a dark brew. One study
found that marinating with
dark beer reduced these can-
cer-causing compounds by 53
percent! Adding spices to ham-
burgers or rubbing meats with
garlic, rosemary, black pepper,
and turmeric is another flavor-
ful way to reduce PAHs. Trim-
ming fat to avoid flare-ups and
smoke also lowers levels of this
carcinogen. If you love sweet
BBQ sauce, add it after cook-
ing, as grilling with it can actu-
ally triple the amount of HCAs
formed.
Keep it safe: Weve all been
there. You get to a BBQ, put your
potato salad down on the table
and it sits there - for hours. Un-
fortunately bacteria in food love
hot summer temperatures, so its
best to follow the when in doubt,
throw it out rule after a plate has
sat out for two hours. While cook-
ing, use an instant thermometer
to make sure food gets to the right
internal temperatures. (Cheat
sheet - Hamburgers: 160. Chick-
en: 165. Beef, pork and fish: 145.
Any leftovers need to be reheat-
ed to 165). Try to keep hot foods
hot and cold foods cold by using
insulated dishes or resting dishes
in a tray of ice and refilling when
necessary, or put fresh bowls of
perishable foods like salads and
meats out in batches.
Eat your veggies: Grilling
veggies doesnt make PAHs
or HCAs, so grill a Portobello
mushroom instead of a burger,
make your own shish kebabs or
grill up some peaches or nec-
tarines for dessert. Vegetables
retain more vitamins when
theyre grilled versus fried or
boiled, and eating foods rich in
antioxidants add cancer-fight-
ing phytochemicals to a meal.
BBQ salads dont have to be
laden with mayo. Try mixing
up a fresh cucumber and to-
mato salad or blend chickpeas
with lemon and basil for some
homemade hummus.
Choose your cut: Choosing
90 percent lean ground meat
over 80 percent ground beef
can save nearly a 100 calories
per burger and nearly halves
the amount of artery-clogging
saturated fat. To keep burgers
moist, try adding egg whites,
breadcrumbs, or veggies like
diced onions, tomatoes or
mushrooms. Avoid processed
meats like hot dogs and ba-
con, which have been found
to drastically raise the risk of
cancer.

Down the Rabbit Hole with

I recently was lucky enough
to acquire one of the new-
est Rockaway Times t-shirts,
which, in my humble opinion,
is the best design to date, es-
pecially with the iconic RT bi-
cycle featured prominently on
both the back and front of the
shirt. I should also add that
the color preference of our
a Rockaway Times T-Shirt!
esteemed publisher, Kevin
Boyle, still remains steadfast
with bright, Day-Glo, orange.
My beloved Grace took
one look at it and said, "That
t-shirt's so bright you gotta
wear shades!" I even men-
tioned to Kevin that had I got-
ten my hands on this t-shirt
a week earlier I could have
worn it in the recent Mermaid
Parade! The ever sensitive Mr.
Boyle immediately quipped,
"You at the Mermaid Parade?
There's an image I can't get
out of my mind!"
Talk about a micro aggres-
sion! Emotionally devastated
by Kevin's bon mot, I tumbled
down a rabbit hole of angst
and hurt feelings and found
myself over in Princeton, New
Jersey where, thank the gods
of progressive academia, I
was immediately granted ac-
cess to a safe space along with
some coloring books, Play-
Doh and a dog to pet. I was
assured that I could use this
space to assuage my hurt feel-
ings in a calm and supportive
atmosphere among the sim-
ilarly afflicted. I immediate-
ly had misgivings regarding
my decision to visit this safe
space as the dog was contin-
ually peeing all over the floor,
the Play-Doh was stale and
hard, they told me I could not
keep my coloring book and
the continual sounds of the
Linda Ronstadt's "Poor, Poor
Pitiful Me" pulsing from the
room's speakers proved just
a wee bit too much for me to
endure. The real deal break-
er came when I inquired if
there was any cold beer to be
had. I was firmly advised that
only pure, healthy, mountain
spring bottled water would
be made available to sate my
thirst.
I politely declined the offer
of bottled water and calm-
ly explained to the student
that, although neither widely
known by the general public
nor advertised by either the
government or bottled water
manufacturers, he and his
brother and sister snowflakes
should be aware that their
drink of choice contains dan-
gerous levels of Dihydrogen
Monoxide (DHMO), a color-
less and odorless chemical
compound, also referred to
by some as Dihydrogen Ox-
ide, Hydrogen Hydroxide,
Hydronium Hydroxide, or
simply Hydric acid. Its basis
is the highly reactive hydrox-
yl radical, a species shown
to mutate DNA, denature
proteins, disrupt cell mem-
branes, and chemically alter
critical neurotransmitters.

fresh perspective.
Accordingly, I stopped by
the VFW on Shad Creek Road
for a couple of ice cold draft
beers (containing safe levels
of DHMO) and some rational
conversation with individuals
whose idea of a safe space is
an armored personnel carrier.
I emerged from my period of
introspection an hour or so

Caffeine Effects
Recently a study by the Na-
tional Institute of Health
(NIH) was published in which
they analyzed the partici-
pants' use of coffee, tea, and
caffeine and compared that to
their risk of developing heart
disease and the amount of cor-
onary artery calcium as seen
on cardiac CAT scans. The
participants were followed for
11 years. Those who regularly
drank tea (more than one cup
per day) had less progression
of coronary artery calcium
and less heart disease than
those who rarely drank tea
(less than 1 cup per day) and

those who never drank tea.
Those who regularly or rare-
ly drank coffee did not show
any difference in the rates of
coronary artery calcium and
heart disease as compared to
the studys control subjects
(non-coffee and tea drinkers).
Likewise caffeine intake also
had no effect. Not surprising-
ly they also found that those
who regularly drank coffee
and smoked, had higher rates
of coronary artery calcium
and heart disease.
So why would drinking tea,
but not coffee have a benefi-
cial effect on heart disease?
Both products are derived
from plants so why would
there be a difference? The au-
thors concluded the answer
was that tea contains naturally
occurring compounds called
polyphenols and specifical-
ly a sub-type of polyphenols
called flavonoids. Coffee does
not contain flavonoids. Fla-
vonoids are found in many
plants and plant products
like parsley, onions, blueber-
ries and other berries, black/
green/oolong tea, bananas,
citrus fruits, red wine, dark
chocolate (flavonoids are re-
moved from most chocolate
because they create a bitter
taste), peanuts, and thyme
to name a few. If this list of
plants sounds familiar, it is
because plants are the basis
of a healthy type of diet that
is suspected to reduce the risk
of heart disease. That diet is
called the Mediterranean diet.
The Mediterranean diet first
became popular in the 1940s
and 50s. It is based on the
foods commonly consumed
in Greece, southern Italy, and
Spain. It is a plant-based diet

and one of the main ingredi-
ents is olive oil. Also included
in the diet are legumes (i.e.
peanuts, peas, beans, and
lentils), fruits, vegetables, un-
refined cereals, fish, cheese,
yogurt, and wine. Meats are
avoided, as are fats, refined
grains (i.e. white bread, white
rice), and sugars. The Med-
iterranean diet is not a fad
diet. Although one may lose
weight on this diet, it is not
a weight-loss diet per se, but
rather a healthy way of living.
It contains the food products
on the food pyramid that are
recommended by nutrition-
ists. It is a high-fiber, low fat
and low sugar diet and is high
in flavonoids.
To get back to the NIH study,
more studies are planned to
assess whether the protec-
tive association with tea con-
sumption can be harnessed.
Perhaps my mother, who used
to buy loose tea and brew her
own tea, was on to something
all those years ago.

For anybody hanging over
the railing of a boat, taking deep
breaths and praying for dry land,
nausea relief cant come soon
enough or strongly enough. As an
airplane banks left or right during
its flight, passengers can sudden-
ly feel their stomach lurch as the
sideways motion makes them
wish theyd stayed on the ground.
Nausea and queasiness can
affect the most cast-ironed stom-
ached amongst us, and can ruin
an afternoon outing or a special
event. Morning sickness during a
pregnancy, nausea from bounc-
ing around on a boat, or car sick-
ness from a journey on twisty
roads can make the desire to stop
a jumping stomach a strong one,
but quick relief is not always easy
to find. Usually, a nap and flat
ginger ale is the remedy of choice.
Many families have stories
now told with amusement, but
not funny at the time of outings
and get-togethers that were ru-

Far Rock HS Class of 1967 Dances the Night Away at 50th Reunion

Class of 1967s 50th reunion
Steering Committee pulled off
the feat of the century, well half
a century. With just 14 months
of planning, the Committee
consisting of alumni, Sherry
Foster Taxman, Suzie Much-
nick, Gary Prisand, Sandra
Westcott and Dyan Zeller Harris
tirelessly searched across the
country for their high school
mates to get together and cele-
brate their class 50th reunion.
More than 120 alumni attended

with guests spanning from 18
different states. On Saturday,
June 24, the reunion bash was
held at The Sands in Lido Beach,
the very same venue where they
celebrated their high school
prom 50 years ago!
According to Prisand, the
Committee worked nonstop to
locate as many alumni as they
possibly could to commem-
orate their class reunion. In
April of 2016, our good friend,
Big Stevie Goldberg hosted
an informal party, where the
idea first came up for the re-
union. We loved the idea and
everyone immediately jumped
in. Many of us now live in dif-
ferent states, and we would

folks we were able to reach.
Unfortunately, as we searched,
we learned that many of our
classmates had passed away.

Jamaica Bay Softball League Week 5 Preview

We hope everyone had a great
July 4th. There were no games
scheduled for Sunday due to
the holiday. The Chuggernauts
and No-Shows did play though,
making up their matchup that
got postponed from Week 1. The
No-Shows brought the gloves and
kept the Chuggers bats quiet as
they won by scores of 6-1 and 5-2.
No-Shows are now in the mix of
the playoff hunt as the Chuggers
hopes are pretty much dead. This
is what we have coming up this
