Green Electronic Technology: Efficient Management of Energy through Responsive and Attentive Live
Data-Sourcing

Pakilala

P&M: Today, we ARE HERE to present to you our study regarding efficient management of energy. Our
study aims to minimize the energy consumption, maximize the value of used power by eliminating
inefficient utilization of electricity. Also, to reduce accidents caused by plugged in appliances that left
unattended.

M: According to the results of the latest National Statistics Office (NSO) and Department of Energy
(DOE) Household Energy Consumption Survey (HECS), Philippine households commonly used electricity
as their main source of energy.

M: (explanation) During the reference period March to August 2011, 87.2 percent of the 21 million
participating households used electricity. It was most commonly used for lighting purposes with about 74
percent and 78.7 percent of household used it as for recreation. Such as watching television, space
cooling, refrigeration, cooking and food preparation, etc.

P: Here in the graph gathered from Department of Energy, coal power plants remain the major
source of Philippine Power Generation at 34.95% from January to June 2016.This is the reason why the
proponent chose solar, to lessen the used of coal and oil based which are imported and are costly.

CJ: As you can see the generation cost of the coal plant has lesser cost than solar energy BUT there is
no distribution and transmission cost fee unlike to the coal plant theres a private company distributor of
electricity. Imagine if you have consumed (insert certain amount) to a (insert specific appliance without
using solar energy and compare it to the same appliance that consume energy from the solar and sum it
up, we can conserve 3php per kilowatt hour.

L: In order to contribute to solve this increasing and expanding effects of over energy consumption,
a smart system solution is needed. A system where the user can see usage data from a web-based user-
friendly dashboard or the user can request and receive data through SMS commands. Using a technology
which uses intrusive load monitoring, user detection, light reflection, smart wireless management, and
remaining budget analysis; this system can keep track of appliances, check energy efficiency and suggest
the best ways for the user to save energy based on usage statistics and the set monthly budget.

C: For example, if the user forgot to switch off an appliance lets say an iron the system will take
care of it and send a friendly SMS reminder to the user; this study is entitled Green Electronic Technology:
Efficient Management of Energy through Responsive and Attentive Liv e - Data Sourcing (GET: EMERALDS)
EMERALDS aims to develop a deployable system that can monitor the power usage of any appliance
connected to the houses electrical power supply in real-time and manage appliances, house lights, and
other possible energy-saving utilities based on set monthly budget.
P: In order to develop the system that efficiently manages energy through responsive and attentive
live-data sourcing, the system includes a HPPS Hybrid Photovoltaic Power Supply which integrates
renewable energy with the electrical grid power source to provide a hybrid-type power to the system.

M: We have the MARC a Manager and Analyzer of Remote Controllers, which acts as the central
server of the system, MARC has a built in Wi-Fi which allows you to access the energy costs and weather
forecast. Also, it is designed to have a GSM capability to enable long distance control via SMS, if Wi-Fi
hotspot is not available and access to the web-based graphical user interface is not possible.

P: We have the ASI an Automanual Switching Interface, which comes in different types: the first
one is the clicker, in which operates as a physical button clicker. Next is the outlet type, which has, aside
from conventional power ports, also offers a dedicated 5V power source. This outlet type ASI, lets the
user to manage, control, and monitor any appliances that is plugged in it.

C: Another type is the reflector, that positions itself where it can reflect the sunlight to its room, in
accordance to the users light intensity preference. Lastly, we have the user detector type, which scans
and detects motions on its area, which may be translated by our MARC, to control the other ASI types. A
web-based graphical user interface will be developed to provide means of interaction between the user,
and the system.

L: The study focuses on developing a deployable solar-powered system that efficiently manages
energy through real-time energy usage monitoring and gives suggestions and notifications based on set
budget and on current appliances usage. The reach of the systems managing and monitoring capabilities
is determined by the extent of the ASI unit deployments. MARC can then notify the user thru its web-
based graphical user interface or through SMS when the set budget is about to be reached or when a
certain appliance is inefficiently consuming energy or is left open. Also, the system uses a combination of
energy from the grid and renewable energy from the photovoltaic cells because the target audience for
deployment is urban households. This makes hydro and/ wind energy source unpractical and inefficient.

CJ: Now, heres the limitation on our different parts of the system. First, on our hardware side, our
system uses radio frequency at 915 MHz as the communication medium between internal units. As for
the communications with the Internet, an internal Wi-Fi module built-in into the Raspberry Pi will be
used: utilizing the 2.4 GHz frequency. We dont have to cover the construction of the gear set of the
servo motors and the fabrication of microcontrollers to be used (AM2560, RP, FM, SD, RM) for it has
been already pre made and integrated as it is purchased.

L: Also, each ASI units have their limitations. First, for our clicker, it is limit related to its form
factor. Since it was designed mainly to control common wall light switches, we are limited on those
switches that is too small or too low. Then, for the outlet type ..

M: Third to discuss the limitation of the ASI unit is the reflector, our sunlight reflectors ability to
reflect sunlight is dependent on its placement. If it is placed in a side where sunlight is barely present,
then its maximum reflected light is also reduced. Also, since we will only have a single design for the
reflector then installation of the product is fully customized. Then, the user detector can only detect
moving objects with a minimum height of 3 feet. This eliminates the need for additional complications
but it assures that only humans are detected. Since the user detectors are intended to automate room
lights, they are placed in doors only which causes another limitation: objects entering through windows
or any other openings cannot be detected.

C: Lastly, evaluation of the system will directly come from the household audiences where the system is
deployed, whether the system can successfully reduce power usage by detecting left-open appliances
and sensing power usage. Also, adding attention from the user to the energy usage by means of
notifications and usage suggestions.

Significance of the Study

This section provides a brief description of the various contributions and significances of the
project to the following beneficiaries:

L: Product Users

The findings of this study will redound to the benefit of households that choose to deploy the
system into their home. The system will help them monitor and manage their electrical energy usage
which saves them from high electrical monthly bills. The monitoring features of the system, without
intent, can also help prevent house fires caused by appliances that heats up too much when left open.

CJ: Future Researchers

This paper can serve as a related research material in relation to their own; they can improve
the system with the technologies that will be available in the future or even use it in an application
suitable for their need.

C: The University

The University of the East will gain credit from the project and will be able to showcase the skills
and potential of the students and will be recognized to be one of the schools that touched the
application of Electronics and Communications in energy monitoring and management systems.
P: The Philippines

Saving energy lowers the demand for fossil fuel imports done by the country to generate energy
which results in less carbon dioxide emission and fewer expenses for the national budget for energy.

M: The Environment

On the long run, the decrease in fossil fuel burning causes a chain reaction to the environment;
it causes a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and subtracts sources for global warming.
