The second reason why firms are opting for the two
extremes is that the tools for executing them are
more available in the present day than they ever were
before. The opportunity to source production from
low-wage countries, which is commonplace in these
times, means that the hard discounters can translate
it as an end-benefit to their customers. If they did not
offer it, someone else would. Likewise, at the lux-
ury end of the market, society has never been more
enamored of the Hollywood actors, athletic celebrit-
ies, and assorted stars. And the desire to mimic
their lifestyles, behavior, and shopping choices has
never been more pronounced. Consequently, luxury
firms find it quite facile to sell an attainable dream
to their clients by tying a certain premium offering
like perfume, bag, or shoe, with the glamour and
pulling power of a celebrity brand ambassador.

1. Less is more
You are probably aware that the Legg Mason Value Trust
has outperformed the S&P 500 index for each of the past
15 calendar years. That may be the reason you decide
to purchase the fund. If so, we are flattered but believe
you are setting yourself up for a disappointment our
so-called streak is a fortunate accident of the calen-
dar If your expectation is that we will outperform the
market every year, you can expect to be disappointed
