HEALTH WOLLY KIDS PROGRAM PLAN OUTLINE

Title of project: Healthy Wolly Kids
Author: Britney Jayne

Problem/Need Statement
Over time, consuming more energy from foods and beverages than the body uses for healthy
functioning, growth, and physical activity, leads to extra weight gain. This energy imbalance is a
key factor behind the high rates of obesity seen in the United States and globally. The percentage
of children with obesity in the United States has more than tripled since the 1970s, and today, 1
in 5 school-aged children has obesity. There are many problems childhood obesity brings. It has
many intermediate and long-term impacts on physical, social, and emotional health. Children
with obesity are at higher risk for having other chronic health conditions, having obesity as an
adult, and more likely to suffer from depression and lower self-esteem.

Goals
1. Community rates of obesity to decrease by adding more fruits and vegetables and decreasing
the amount of added sugar in the diet.
2. Parents to see the influence biblical principles have on body image.
3. Parents to feel empowered to properly influence emotional and physical health of their
children.

Objectives
1.By the end of the program, 85% of the parent participants will have 2 practical changes they
can make to the family meal plan and diet to include an additional serving of vegetables and one
less source of added sugar.
2. By the end of the program, 85% of the parent participants will have 2 applicable Bible verses
to share with their children on how they were made in Gods image, and how God wishes for us
to take care of our bodies.
3. By the end of the program, 75% of parent participants will state that they now have the
confidence to know how to influence a positive change in their familys emotional and physical
health.

Primary target audience

The primary target audience is parents at a local church, Wollaston Church of the Nazarene, or
Wolly as many call it. A parent is being classified as any immediate caregiver that attends the
church and has at least one child in the CDCs range of 6-19. The parents behavior will need to
be at a medium degree of readiness in order for a successful intervention, as entire success will
be based on parent compliance. All religions are welcome, although the intervention will be
centered on belief that the Bible is the word of God. All cultures and demographics will be
welcomed and met where they are in their family health journey.

Primary target key strategies

The key strategy to reaching the parents is making them feel empowered and able to affect their
childrens dietary habits. By giving them a message that they can be positive influences and
feasible strategies to change current behaviors, they will be able to see this too. The greatest
barrier to reaching them is the belief of parents that they are not smart enough or educated
enough to make this much of a change for their family. The main benefit of this program is for
parents to feel empowered, educated, and capable of putting their childrens health as a top
priority. The information passed on will be credible, user-friendly resources such as myplate,
centers for disease control and prevention, and healthy kids healthy future. All information
provided will be basic and applicable strategies to improve the nutrition and well-being of their
children, as this is not directed for scholars or researchers. The channels communication will go
through are announcements in the church bulletin and flyers and handouts during and after the
seminar/discussion. There will also be a website where information will be posted and
comments can be made by the participants.

Secondary target audience

The secondary target audience is any member of the church who may have a family member who
does not attend the church that may be interested in this program in the future. This intervention
is specifically designed to be tested with the members and families of the church to see if the
sense of community support attracts the audience.

Secondary target key strategies

The simple strategy of reaching the secondary target audience is giving information on the
importance of parental involvement of childhood obesity prevention for our community as a
whole. By reaching the church with handouts and video presentations, the hope is for members
to pass along the potential for this intervention to go outside the walls of the church.

Pretest strategy
The pretest strategy will be a short survey handed out to all members of Wollaston Church of the
Nazarene. There will be short questions that ask about interest, readiness, best communication
strategies and ease of after church program implementation. This will assess if the parents and
church community have the interest to begin this intervention.

Theoretical foundation:
The framework best selected for this intervention is the stages-of-change construct. The stages-
of-change construct will work to the idea that people at different points in the process of change
can benefit from different interventions, matched to their stage at the time. This will be
encouraging for parents to understand the intervention will meet them where they are to come up
with ideal goals for their personalized family situation. A circular model is best for this
intervention, so parents dont feel they have a reached exit point, but that there are always new
goals and objectives to meet.

Issues of Concern/Potential Problems

The greatest need for concern with this intervention is parent compliance. This intervention will
only work if parents take the tools they learn in the seminar and bring them home to implement
with their families. If the parents who sign up are not ready and willing to implement the
strategies, there will be no way to know if the program was successful.
