best method. Kumaravadivelu (2006) asserts that the postmethod condition is a sustainable state
of affairs that compels us to fundamentally restructure our view of language teaching and teacher
education (p. 170). He continues to suggest that the assumed responsibility of postmethod is to
educate teachers to be theorizers of their practice. These teachers would be prepared for this task
by empowering their skills, knowledge and autonomy.
Postmethod has been defined and delineated in different terms by different scholars. Among
those, Kumaravadivelus conception is more acknowledged (Kumaravadivelu, 1999, 2001, 2003a,
2003b). Kumaravadivelu (2006) enumerates three principles as the building blocks of postmethod
pedagogy namely particularity, practicality, and possibility. La condicin posmethod y sus piedras
angulares
conocimiento y autonoma.
Particularity: It is the backbone of postmethod pedagogy maintaining that the role of context or
situation is fundamental to meaningful pedagogy. It focuses on local exigencies and lived
experiences (p. 171). Kumaravadivelu (2006) believes that we "must be sensitive to a particular
group of teachers teaching a particular group of learners pursuing a particular set of goals within a
particular institutional context embedded in a particular socio-cultural milieu" (p. 171). In this
sense, context plays a crucial role in postmethod pedagogy.
Practicality: This dimension refers to the link between theory and practice. To put it simply, one of
the drawbacks of language teaching has been the gap between professional theories of the
researchers and personal theories of the practitioners. Practicality tries to link these two
dimensions as much as possible. For example, action research has been proposed as one of the
techniques which can contribute to bridging the gap between these two extremes. Of course,
research is needed to see to what extent the link can be made.
Possibility: It refers to the extent our understanding of ourselves and our society and the world we
live in are actually affected by the language we speak or learn. This has been a concern of
sociopolitical aspect of ELT in postmethod era. In addition, the view that language shapes the
power relationships and social structures of a society falls within this area (Gholami et al., 2012).
Abstract
In the postmethod era, the role of teachers is seen as central, changing from informationoriented
to inquiry oriented. They are considered not only as practitioners, but also as
self-directed theorizers who construct their own theory of practice. Effective postmethod teachers
are able to analyze their classroom procedure to see what works and what
doesnt so that they can assess their instruction effectively to bring the necessary changes for
achieving the desired goal. Their teaching goal is not just transmitting a set of preselected and
presequenced body of knowledge, but their own beliefs and knowledge
are considered as an integral part of their teaching process. This kind of process is surely a
reflective not a mechanical one. In this article, first the concept of method is defined
and then the shift from method to postmethod is discussed briefly. It will be followed by different
approaches to postmethod pedagogy. Finally, the role of teacher, teacher educator and
prospective teacher are elaborated in detail.
Abstracto
Background in brief
Principled pragmatism
To facilitate the growth and development of teachers own theory to practice
Basic Considerations
too inadequate and too limited to explain the complexity of language teaching.
(Kumaravadivelu,2006)
Overlooks the fund of experience and tacit knowledge. (Freeman, 1961. P.35)
Knowledge-oriented
Suitable for novice teachers since they dont have much experience in teaching
Classroom-oriented
Macro-strategic Framework
Activities:
10 perceptual mismatches
Activity: Writing statements using present tense marker. Activities related to self-discovery.
Contextualize linguistic input
Language best developed when it is learnt holistically (Rigg, 1991 cited in Kumaravadivelu, 1994)
Giving opportunity to differentiate between own culture and the culture of target language.
The need for teachers to be sensitive about societal, political, economic, educational environment
where L2 takes place
Teachers are encouraged to formulate their own methods of teaching and thus, overcome the
limitations of methods.
Unlike Eclecticism, its not about selecting random techniques and applying those in classrooms. Its
interlinked with knowledge and practical understanding.
