GROUP 1:
1. The system shown in Figure below has a specific discharge of 3 m2/s. The depth, y1 , upstream of
the sluice gate is 2 meters.
A sluice gate introduced to a flow imposes subcritical flow upstream of the gate and supercritical
flow downstream of the gate. Depths y1 and y 2 make up an alternate depth pair.
Determine:
a. The upstream Froude number, Fr1
b. The specific energy upstream of the sluice gate, E1 .
c. The downstream depth, y 2
d. The downstream specific energy, E2 .
e. The downstream Froude number, Fr2 .
2. Show that the critical depth y c is related to alternate depths y1 and y 2 in a rectangular channel by
the equation:
1/ 3
2 y12 y 22
y c
y1 y 2
3. A rectangular channel 5 m wide carries a discharge of 25 m3/s. The observed velocity at a
particular point in the channel is 2.5 m/s:
a. What is the specific energy of the flow at this point?
b. What are the alternate depth at this point?
c. What is the critical depth in the channel?
4. A vertical sluice gate with an opening of a = 0.7 m produces a downstream jet depth of
y2 0.43 m when installed in a long rectangular channel 6 m wide conveying a steady
discharge of 25 m3/s. Assuming that the flow downstream of the gate eventually returns to the
uniform flow depth of y s 2.8 m (See figure below).

GROUP 2
1. The system shown in figure below has a specific discharge of 3 m2/s. The depth, y1 , upstream of
the step is 2 meters. The upward step height is 0.2 meters.
3. Find the slope of the free water surface in a rectangular channel of width 20 m, having depth of
flow 5 m. The discharge through the channel is 50 m3/s. The bed of channel is having a slope of 1

width at location 1 is w1 = 4.5 m. A constriction is encountered at location 2 downstream such that
the width w2 = 3 m. The depth of flow y2 at downstream location 2 is 2 meters.
a. Determine the specific discharges at locations 1 and 2.
b. Determine the downstream specific energy, E2 .
c. Determine the downstream Froude number, Fr2 .
d. Determine the upstream specific energy, E1 .
e. Determine the upstream depth, y1 .
f. Determine the upstream Froude number, Fr1 .
g. Determine the absolute change in the water surface from location 1 to location 2.
2. The specific energy for a 5 m wide rectangular channel is 4 Nm/N. If the rate of flow in the
channel is 20 m3/s, determine the alternate depths of flow.
3. A rectangular channel carries a discharge of 5.66 m3/s. Find the critical depth yc and critical
velocity Vc for (a). Width of 3.66 m; (b) Width of 2.74 m. What slope will produce critical
velocity if width of 3.66 m.
