Lesson Idea Name: Cells and Organelles are in Kahoots

Content Area: Biology
Grade Level(s): High School
Content Standard Addressed: SB1.a. Construct an explanation of how cell structures and organelles
(including nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, cell wall, chloroplasts, lysosome, Golgi, endoplasmic reticulum,
vacuoles, ribosomes, and mitochondria) interact as a system to maintain homeostasis.
Technology Standard Addressed: 5. Computational Thinker
Students develop and employ strategies for understanding and
solving problems in ways that leverage the power of technological
methods to develop and test solutions.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
Students will works in groups each developing a narrated PowerPoint presentation on the different
organelles of cell. Students will then give their presentation to the class and will develop content related
questions to ask their classmates at the end of the presentation. The students final products will be used to
inform the other students on the organelles of the cell. During the presentations, students will be filling out a
graphic organizer of the functions of the cells. The SRT will be introduced by having students put away their
notes and get an electronic device out.
Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
Assess prior knowledge Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) To illuminate common
misconceptions Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) Summative assessment of content knowledge Test preparation
Survey/Poll Discussion starter Homework collection Other (please explain): Review

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

During this activity students will be using devices (phones, IPod, IPad, computer) to answer timed questions
related to the functions of cell organelles. During this activity, the teacher will be moderating the quiz and
moving the students on to the next question when all the answers have been submitted. This specific activity
will last no more than 5 minutes.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

Multiple choice Multiple select True/False Yes/No
Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank Longer open-ended response

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

Yes No
Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)

Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
Yes
No
Why or why not?

Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?

Ideally, this activity would conclude the lesson, so after the quiz students would be dismissed to their next
class.

How will the data be used?

This activity will not be for a grade. It will be away for students to test the knowledge they gained during the
class. However, I may use it to emphasize and review functions of certain organelles in later classes.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

My personal learning is that students can test their knowledge that they gained from this class.
