ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Hypertension is commonly difined as an increase in systolic blood pressure


about 140 mmHg and diastolic pressure to at least 90 mmHg. Hypertension is a global health
problem that needs attention as it causes death in developed and developing countries. It is
estimated that 20% of united states populations have blood pressure more than 160/90 mmHg. In
Indonesia, prevalence of hypertension is 26.5% while in Jambi province the prevalence of
hypertension is 10,05%. Hypertension is one of cardiovascular risks besides smoking, less
physical activity, and obesity. Cardiovascular is still the main cause of death in Europe and the
whole world. About 29,6% of all death in the world is caused by cardiovascular diseases. In
Indonesia, the prevalence of heart coroner is about 0,5% and heart failure is 0,13%. The
purpose of this research is to identify the prevalence of hypertension and estimation of
cardiovascular diseases to civil servants in the secretariat of Jambi province.

METHODS: This research is using the descriptive method with the cross sectional approach.
The research was located in the Secretariat of Jambi Province on may 18 2015 until june 1 2015.
The data was collected with the interview and examination used sphygmomanometer to each of
the civil servants which amount to 90 peoples were chosen by stratified random sampling
technique.

RESULT: The prevalence of hypertension in civil servant in the secretariat of Jambi province is
17.8%, which obtained from an examination about 15.6% and respondents who have normal
blood pressure but taking a medication is 2.2%, male 22%, and female 12.5%. The highest age is
46-55 years about 33.3%. About 32.3% of civil servant were current smoker had high blood
pressure, 20.8% of civil servant do not exercise regularly had high blood pressure, and 15.7%
were obesity had high blood pressure. The civil servant who have high blood pressure and 3 risk
factor of cardiovascular disease is 12.5%, 2 risk factor of cardiovascular disease is 37.5% and 1
risk factor is 50% while civil servant who do not have high blood pressure but have 3 risk factor
of cardiovascular disease is 8.1%, 2 risk factor is 24.3%, 1 risk factor is 54% and 13.5% do not
have a risk factor.

CONCLUSION: The prevalence of hypertension in civil servant in the secretariat of Jambi


province is 17.8%. About 32.3% of civil servant were current smoker had high blood pressure,
20.8% of civil servant do not exercise regularly had high blood pressure, and 15.7% were
obesity had high blood pressure. The civil servant who have high blood pressure and 3 risk
factor of cardiovascular disease is 12.5%, 2 risk factor of cardiovascular disease is 37.5% and 1
risk factor is 50% while civil servant who do not have high blood pressure but have 3 risk factor
of cardiovascular disease is 8.1%, 2 risk factor is 24.3%, 1 risk factor is 54% and 13.5% do not
have a risk factor.
