Communication is the key to any successful organization. People need to feel that they are

informed. Without effective communication people get mixed messages that can result in

frustration.

There are many ways for school personnel in a district to communicate effectively to the general

public, stakeholders, and school community. In my elementary school, we are trying to move

away from paper and toward more electronic communication. However, we still use Take Home

Folders and assignment notebooks as the main way of sharing day to day details with parents.

Social media can be helpful and offers a variety of ways to share information. Web pages,

Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are all popular forms of communicating to a large audience.

These avenues of correspondence need to be monitored closely, and access to posting on them

needs to be limited and assigned with trustworthiness.

As a school district, you always want to be in control of the message; getting out in front of

things. If you are not in control of the message, it means someone else is. That can cause a

problem and make things even more difficult for those in charge.

It is important to be open and honest and reach out to all stakeholders. This builds positive

relationships and allows for much needed engagement and support.
