JINDAL STEEL-AN INTRODUCTION AND ITS

RELATION WITH THE DISCIPLINE OF METALLURGY
AND MATERIALS ENGINEERING

Jindal steel and Power Limited is an industrial

powerhouse and is one of the most important
steel producers for the country. It ranks third in
terms of the quantity of steel produced in terms
of the weight in tons. Since Jindal steel and power
limited is all about production of steel and mining
activities there is no doubt that the science of
metallurgy and materials engineering comes into
play.
Also, since Jindal steel and power limited (JSPL
Ltd.) deals about ores, mining, steel casting, steel
joining, steel forming and materiality analysis, the
branch of metallurgy and materials engineering
especially, the industrial aspect of it plays an
inevitable role in the functioning of JSPL Ltd.
2 .SALIENT FEARUTURES OF THE POLICIES OF
JINDAL STEEL

Any steel or mining industry is prone to the causes of

downfall of biodiversity and pollution of the ecosystem
like soil erosion and increase of percentage of harmful
gases in the atmosphere. But JSPL takes maximum care
that it endeavours to strengthen Indias industrial base
not only with infrastructural development but also
along with careful sustainable development
approaches. For this purpose it has established several
policies and salient features of some of the policies are
listed below

1 .To take care of ecological issues all the operating stations

have a department called the environment management
department equipped with sophisticated instruments with
standard operating procedures in place as part of the
international organization for standardization 14000
directives.
2 .It is taken care that all the water is recycled and the coal
wastes are used to generate power and the ash residue in
the construction of roads.
3. High efficient filters have been installed in the industries so
that harmful gases doesnt go into the atmosphere and cause
air pollution.
4. The solid waste is managed effectively such that the waste
doesnt cause pollution to the environment. One example is
the reusing of the stony waste matter called as slag for
cement manufacturing and brick making.
5 .In the year 2013-2014 tree plantation programmes were
organized by Jindal steel wherein more than 2, 83, 000
saplings were planted.
JSPL Ltd. has won many awards for its ecological
concern the recent ones being Global
Environment platinum award and Global
Sustainability award both in the year 2015.
3. A PRODUCT OF JINDAL STEEL-JINDAL PANTHER
CEMENTS SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON
ENVIRONMENT

The environmental impact of Jindal Panther cement is

significantly high. The cement leads to loss of fertility in the
soil. Despite the composition of the panther cement being
analysed and improved by the Jindal company, the company
is unable to control the pollution and the disruption of local
biodiversity it causes. The cement plant is a source of
chemicals like sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide which causes
acid rain and breathing problems to the people. The gases
from the cement industry also includes greenhouse gases like
carbon dioxide and thus it accounts for global warming which
is a major threat to the earth.
4 .BRANCH COURSES RELATED TO THE JINDAL
INDUSTRY

MM5023 (IRON AND STEEL MAKING TECHNOLOGY)

MM5050 (THERMODYNAMICS AND KINETICS): TO

GENERATE POWER FROM COAL WASTAGE BY USE OF
THE SCIENCE OF THERMODYNAMICS

MM5013 (TEXTURES IN MATERIALS): TO DEVOLOP

PROPER MATERIAL BY LEARNING ABOUT ITS TEXTURE

MM5001 (COMPOSITE MATERIALS): TO STUDY WHAT

COMPOSITION IS BEST FOR AN ALLOY TO HAVE
SUITABLE PROPERTIES THAT ARE REQUIRED
5. CRITIQUE-SYSTEMATIC ANALYSIS OF
ECOLOGICAL POLICIES OF JINDAL STEEL

As far as steel production is considered, though JSPL steel is

causing lots of air pollution and depletion of natural
resources, it is taking serious efforts to maintain greenery. It
has managed to convert 22% of its industrial space to
greenery.
QUALITY POLICY:
It includes recycling all the waste water, generating power
using coal wastes and using fly ash to lay roads we might
appreciate this effort as a citizen but according to a
professional this decreases the efficiency of the production.
QUANTITY CRISIS:
Steel is considered as the backbone of a developing country.
Though its manufacturing is necessary over production it can
lead to loss of natural resources and increased environmental
pollution.
UNEMPLOYMENT CRSIS:
In the race of manufacturing more steel, indulgence in
automation of manufacturing process is more. Despite
growing population it leads to unemployment in addition to
extra power crises.
