Module 2:

Goal:

My goal for the week is to work on ear training by working on melodic dictation for 20 minutes and
harmonic dictation for 20 minutes. I also want to work on sight singing with prepared melodies for 30
minutes, and do Teoria interval practice for 15 minutes.

Performance Assessment:

Ive learned that I do have a difficult time sharing focus on both pitch and rhythm when doing the
melodies as a sort of sight singing exercise. I feel more confident about the rhythm performance. I need
to find a strategy to have focus on both pitch and rhythm during the melody portion for the next
module.

Goal Evaluation:

My interval training has gone well. Melodic dictation is my better skill versus harmonic dictation. In
harmonic dictation, I try to abide by the strategy finding the bass of the chord and the going from there,
but I still know that I have trouble finding the remainder of the chord.

Module 3:

Goal:

The Goal for this week is to put more focus on my weaker skills. I will spend 40 minutes working on
harmonic dictation and 20 minutes working on melodic dictation. I will continue interval practice on
Teoria for 20 minutes, and I will practice rhythms in different meter for 30 minutes.

Performance Assessment:

The melody performance went well in my opinion. I feel like I wrote a melody that rhythmically should
have been more challenging, but I must have been tentative after not feeling like Id done well the
module before. For the rhythm portion, it went well. I felt on top of what was happening, and I feel like
Ive grasped the concept of triplets in this meter.

Goal Evaluation:

Spending more time on harmonic dictation is a good thing and I need to keep telling myself that.
Practice makes perfect. Just nowhere near perfection yet. The increased time allocated for this module
created what seemed like only more frustration. I need to keep up the same goal for next module and
back down. Itll get better hopefully.
Module 4:

Goal:

The goal for this week is going to stay the same in order to maintain focus on improving harmonic
dictation. I will spend 40 minutes working on harmonic dictation and 20 minutes working on melodic
dictation. I will continue interval practice on Teoria for 20 minutes, and I will practice rhythms in
different meter for 30 minutes.

Performance Assessment:

Yay Compound triple meter. 9/8 time was fun to play with. I think after some thought and a little
practice my performed rhythm went pretty well. I feel somewhat pleased. The melody felt pretty good. I
put it in G major to change things up a little bit.

Goal Evaluation:

Im still terrible at dictation. I know the practice is helping and Im getting a little bit better. My melodic
dictation skills just seemed to be way down and I was not getting the whole thing written out in the 5
times I played the melody. For harmonic dictation, I was able to right out the root of every chord, but I
was always able to stack every chord play dint he progression.

Module 5:

Goal:

Time to get serious about dictation. Ive felt confident about my interval practice. Thats only getting 15
minutes this week. Melodic Dictation gets an hour of practice and Harmonic Dictation gets an hour of
practice. I have always struggled with dictation, but I need to take control of it and make it happen for
myself. Thats the only way Im going to get any better.

Performance Assessment:

I think its cool that were now applying minor keys into our assessments. For the one, I did choose an
easy one by writing my melody in A minor. I made sure to get all the required scale degrees in there. I
feel like it went pretty well. I found no particular difference in the level of difficulty of doing triplets in
4/4 versus 2/4. I think using the triplets is interesting. I feel like the rhythm performance did go well
also.

Goal Evaluation:

After spending quite much more time working on dictation skills, I felt like I still did struggle to a certain
extent but I definitely stayed calm the whole time and tried to be more strategic in my approach to fill
the gaps that I had just left blank on my staff before. I tried writing out the rhythm first and the trying to
fill thenotes by thinking in terms of intervals when I got stuck on something. I would use my interval
reference points (little tunes or songs that had those intervals, i.e. N-B-C). I still have a long long was
to go, but I do feel like this module went better than the last in terms of working on dictation.
Module 6:

Goal:

I am going to stick to my guns here and maintain the increased time for dictation practice. Its going to
be an hour of melodic and an hour of harmonic. Interval practice also remains important and will stay at
20 minutes. The interval portion I want to try to improve too now though after I realized last week in my
dictation practice how effective the interval skill are in helping to figure out the stacking of a chord or
the notes in the melody.

Performance Assessment:

I wrote my melody in E minor. I included all the scale degrees. I feel like I had a decent sense of pitch
and rhythm in my performance. For the rhythm performance, it took me a bit to grasp the 12/8 meter,
but I realized I was overthinking it and its pretty self-explanatory. It was writing a rhythm in that meter
that I found interesting, thinking of different ways to fill each measure.

Goal Evaluation:

I completed my goals for the week and felt satisfied with the gradual improvements that have coming
along.

Module 7:

Goal:

For this week, Im going to practice prepared rhythms in different meters for 25 minutes, interval
practice on Teoria for 30 minutes, Melodic Dictation for an hour, and Harmonic Dictation fort an hour.

Performance Assessment:

I wrote my melody in D minor. I tried to incorporate intervals that were a large jump. I felt like I did
pretty well for the most part. The rhythm in the melody was not too difficult, but I thought I did
maintain pitch and rhythm throughout. Writing a rhythm in quintuple meter was pretty cool. I found it
easier than the previous ones like 12/8 and 9/8. I pretty sure my performance of y rhythm was pretty
good. I dont think there were any mistakes.

Goal Evaluation:

I was able to meet my goal for this week. I hit each amount of time I allocated for each type of practice. I
do see improvements coming along. It is a gradual process through much repetition and trial and error. I
need to stick to practicing on this regimen past the length of this course if Im going to get to be at a
level that I feel I need to eventually be at.
