Grade Level(s): 9-12
Content Standard Addressed:

SB2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to analyze how genetic information is expressed in
cells.

a. Construct an explanation of how the structures of DNA and RNA lead to the expression of
information within the cell via the processes of replication, transcription, and translation

Technology Standard Addressed:

1. Empowered Learner

Students leverage technology to take an active role in choosing, achieving and demonstrating competency in
their learning goals, informed by the learning sciences.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.

This activity is a review session after a unit on DNA replication, transcription, translation was taught.
Instructional activities that will occur prior to this activity would be direct instruction, laboratory activities,
and projects/presentations all pertaining to the unit.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):

Student Response and Assessment Tools
Assess prior knowledge Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) To illuminate common
misconceptions Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) Summative assessment of content knowledge Test preparation
Survey/Poll Discussion starter Homework collection Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

The teacher will introduce the review to the students during the end of a class period. Students will receive
the link for the review and will perform the review for a homework grade. The review must be completed by
students by the next class period.
Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):
Multiple choice Multiple select True/False Yes/No
Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

Yes No
Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)

Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
Yes
No
Why or why not?

The activity is a review and corrective feedback will be needed for students to understand what they
answered incorrectly and what caused them to answer incorrectly.

Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?

Data will be collected from the responses, by the teacher, and will be reviewed to find out what topics most
students are struggling with. The next class period, students will be placed in groups, will discuss why they
missed particular questions, and will provide explanations to the class why they answered questions
incorrectly. The teacher will facilitate knowledge by adding on to students explanations of topics.

How will the data be used?

Data will be used to differentiate instruction for students who are shown to struggle with certain topics. Data
will be discussed with the whole class with no names being mentioned. Further reviews and instruction will
be created to assist students that struggled with a particular topic on the review (based on the data). New
instruction techniques and methods will be devised in order to create a concrete understanding of the
content material.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

Student Response and Assessment Tools
Student responses will be used to collect data in order for instruction to improve and become more clear. If
the data shows that many students struggled with a particular question, then that topic was not taught
properly. Instruction and activities must be changes in order to better facilitate student learning. The use of
response data is critical in determining if instruction is getting through to the students and student response
tools are a great way to determine if instruction needs to be given to students using different methods.
