PROBLEM AND ITS BACKROUND

Introduction

Despite guyabano (Annona muricata) is a green fruit, pear-shaped fruit covered with
soft spines. It is also called soursop and it has a flower. Species of the genus Annona of the
custard apple tree family (Ducusin, 2015). Guyabano (Annona muricata) flowers bloom all year
round but its peak is from May to June. Guyabano (Annona muricata) has a solitary flower that
is large, yellow or greenish-yellow in color.

As we all know, people nowadays has problems with mosquitoes (Aedes aegypti).
Mosquitoes (Aedes aegypti) are insects that sucks blood from peoples skin. In the Philippines,
mosquito is also a problem (Royal Britannic Gardens, 2005), people usually knew that
mosquitoes (Aedes aegypti) have viruses that can harm many people. All of you knew about
malaria and zika virus, they are both mosquito-borne illness. As we all know TV commercials
like mosquito repellants like katol are very useful nowadays so the researcher conducted this
study because he want to prove that the flowers of guyabano (Annona muricata) have its
important use. The researcher sees its possible use in order for him to make another useful
thing just like his product, a mosquito coil (katol). As we all know a katol is always used as a
mosquito repellant (Talavera, et. al., 2013). Based on the researchers observation he knew that
it is necessary to invent something new because in order to afford or to purchase a mosquito
coil or katol you must spend your money or instead of making a homemade mosquito repellant.
Hence, the researcher aims to prove that the flowers of guyabano (Annona muricata) are also
capable of being used as an ingredient to create an effective mosquito repellant.

Irritated with mosquito (Aedes aegypti) outbreaks during the rainy seasons (Ulita,
2013)? The researcher is here to show you that theres another way to drive away these pests
in a way that doesnt add to environmental pollution. After conducting this research on
guyabano (Annona muricata) flowers, the researcher found out that natural repellants tend to
be volatile plant oils (Morton, 1987) and guyabano (Annona muricata) flowers has a moisture
and a scent that can repel mosquitoes (Aedes aegypti). Hence, the researcher developed the
idea of producing a mosquito coil out of guyabano (Annona muricata) flower. This project can
be beneficial in different ways. Not only does it help get rid of mosquitoes (Aedes aegypti), but
also is affordable and easy to make.

This project will be benefited to people with no money, and also for our society and I
also forget, for the people around the world and countries that has problems on mosquitoes
(Aedes aegypti). The researcher conducted this study in Mercado, Boac, Marinduque,
Philippines and also on days like rainy days and sunny days and the place is in Christians
residence.

Based on above statements, the researcher decided to continue his study on guyabano
(Annona muricata) flower and his mosquito coil (katol) as a mosquito repellant.
Statement of the Problem

The aim of this study is to prove that it is possible to create a mosquito coil or katol
made out of guyabano (Annona muricata) flower. Specifically, it sought to answer the following
questions:

1. Would it be effective as much as its counterpart of the commercial katol?

2. Would the way on how the katol is made affect its properties and use?
3. Does guyabano flowers have specific properties that suits it for making it into a katol?

Significance of the Study

The Philippines as we all know, is a tropical country. People might experience the
scorching heat of the sun or heavy rains. And nowadays, we experience both interchanging in
everyday life. The change of weather might affect our health and the behavior of the things
around us. One thing that will surely be attracted by the stagnant waters in insects specifically
mosquitoes (Aedes aegypti). The researchers project comes in the katol (mosquito repellant)
out of guyabano (Annona muricata) flower which many can benefit from it.

The significance of this study on guyabano (Annona muricata) flower, mosquito coil is to
make peoples living more comfortable and protected from mosquito bites. And also to prevent
on having a dengue virus and also the importance of this is it is not so expensive and any of you
can also make one of this like his product instead of spending money on TV commercial
products. The researchers product would be highly beneficial to them for the prices of our
basic necessities are gradually increasing. Therefore, we need to improvise on some certain
products we use in our everyday life.

The researchers product will be beneficial to the folks who are experiencing mosquito
(Aedes aegypti) problems in their homes or in the community. In this study, the researcher
found out that his study is very effective and also may be consider as a solution on peoples
problems in case of mosquitoes (Aedes aegypti).

Scope and Delimitation

This study focused on the aspects of the topic that were covered in the researchers
study are the other benefits or uses of Guyabano (Annona muricata) flower. It shows if the
researcher can make katol out of guyabano (Annona muricata) flower and if it is capable of
being an insecticide. The researcher will budget the time to finish and to have a successful
outcome. The researcher conducted this so that he may learn enough knowledge that can help
us in our daily lives. The only risk here is that we should know the scope of our time because
considering it contains a biodegradable waste, guyabano (Annona muricata) flower it can be
easily be rotten.
