News from the nurse
The State of Indiana requires additional
immunizations as students enter sixth grade; a
tetanus booster and the meningococcal
vaccine. Updated immunization records must
be on file in our nurses office by the first day of
school on August 1. The records may be
mailed or turned into our nurse at either Meet
@ the Middle or the first day of school. If your
child has an exemption on file, it must be
renewed each school year.

Our nurse will be in her office on July 28 and
July 31 from 7:30 11:30 am and 1:00 3:00
pm to assist parents with medical needs for the
upcoming school year.
Bus routes
Bus routes will be finalized the week of July 24.
When routes are finalized, parents will receive
an email letting them know they can check
their bus stop and pick up/drop off time by
using the online portal on the districts web
page at www.noblesvilleschools.org and
clicking bus routes" under the parent section.
The NEMS bus zone is located on the west
side of the building.
Car riders, walkers, & bike riders
The student drop-off and pick-up area is on the
southeast side of the building at door #15 near
the football field. Parents should enter the
parking lot from Field Drive and follow the sign
to the circle drive. Drop-off time is no earlier
than 7:00 am. Students arriving before 7:20 am
should report to the cafeteria.
Students who walk or ride bikes to school
should use Gate #19, near the bus zone on the
west side of the building.
NEMS Parent Information Nights
Please plan to join us for our annual Parent
Information Nights at 6:30 pm on Monday,
August 7 for seventh & eighth grade parents,
and aaaaaa
Wednesday, August 16 for sixth grade
parents. Our teachers will be sharing what your
child will experience at NEMS this year.
Meet @ the Middle 6th grade orientation July 26th
Meet @ the Middle is a required orientation session held for all incoming 6th
graders. At least one parent must attend with their child. On July 21, 2017,
you will receive an email of your childs schedule and team assignment. You
and your child will attend one of two scheduled sessions, based upon this
team assignment. The schedule is as follows:

During this session, we will provide students the opportunity to tour the
school, try out their lockers, and learn more about all the different
opportunities and programs at NEMS. Most important, students will meet
their team teachers and participate in some fun activities to help them get to
know their new teammates.
While students are participating in these activities with their team teachers,
parents will be participating in a detailed and informative session on learning
at NEMS and student iPads (iPads will be provided to 6th grade students
during the first week of school).
Team assignments and first day of school meeting locations
We will be emailing student schedules to parents on July 21, 2017. The
schedule will include the student's classes, teachers, and team assignment.
We will also provide directions for where students are to report on the first
day of school. Students will receive their iPads during the first week of
school.
On the first day of school students should go directly to their team meeting
locations. Teachers will be posted throughout the building and at all car and
bus zone entrances to help all students find these locations as they enter

New 7th & 8th grade student orientation
NEMS will have a special student and parent orientation night for any 7th or
8th grader new to NEMS this year on July 25 beginning at 5:00 pm. We will
provide information about our school, answer questions, and give tours of
the school. The goal of this event is to make the transition to NEMS for our
new families as smooth as possible. 6th grade students and parents new to
Noblesville should plan to attend the orientation on July 26 scheduled for
ALL 6th grade students

Daily announcements
Student announcements will occur at the end of
each school day. Students should pay close
attention as they will learn about sports tryouts,
meetings, cancellations, upcoming events, and
other information. The announcements are also
posted daily on the NEMS webpage.

eLearning and Early Release Days
Noblesville East and West Middle School students will participate in six
eLearning days during the school year. They are scheduled on August 30,
September 27, November 15, February 7, March 7, and April 25. On these
days, students will attend school through the last lunch period, and then
be dismissed at 12:25 pm to go home to continue their learning by
participating in learning activities electronically through their school device
and Canvas. These eLearning days will allow teachers to participate in
professional development focused on teaching and technology in the
classroom.
In addition to the eLearning days, we will also continue to participate in our
traditional early release days. They are scheduled for August 16,
September 15 (Homecoming Friday), November 1, November 29, January
24, February 21, and May 9. Students will be dismissed at 2:05 pm.
A supervised study hall will be provided in the cafeteria for students who
must remain at school for after school activities on these days.
Attendance procedures
If your child will be absent from school, please call our 24-hour attendance
line at 776-6258 before 9:00 am on the day of the absence and follow the
prompts. If no reason for the absence is given, the absence must be
recorded as unexcused.
Pre-arranged absence request forms are to be completed should your
family have an activity or event that will force your child to miss school.
Please submit the form at least 5 days prior to the absence.
Cafeteria information
To ensure your student is ready for the first day of school, please visit
PayPams to view your student's lunch balance. PayPams also allows you
to monitor daily purchases, and set up automated notifications regarding
account balances for no charge. There is a nominal fee only when you
make deposits to the account online. We also accept cash and checks at
the register. The cost of a student breakfast is $1.25 and a student lunch
is $2.00.

Athletic Paperwork
New to NEMS this year, the paperwork required for participation in
Noblesville East Middle School athletics will now be completed online via
the Rank One Sport system. This is the same system currently used by
Noblesville High School. Student athletes will still need to turn in a hard
copy of the IHSAA Physical Form completed by a licensed physician
dated after April 1, 2017.
All the paperwork required to try out for an NEMS athletic team can be
found at www.noblesvilleschools.org by choosing Noblesville East Middle
School and clicking the "Athletics" tab. Paper forms will also be available
in the NEMS office.
 Frequently Asked Questions
This information is provided to help parents and students with answers to our frequently asked questions. These
guidelines are used to keep classroom interruptions to a minimum.

Q. WHAT IF MY CHILD BRINGS HIS/HER CELLULAR PHONE TO SCHOOL?

A. Communication/Electronic Devices:
Devices may, with teacher permission, be used in that teacher's class. Devices may not be used to communicate in any
manner during class without the teacher's permission. Use of these devices outside of class is permitted provided that
such use does not interfere with school operations or disrupt the learning environment. Please refer to Personal Electronic
Device and the Noblesville Schools policy.

Q. WHAT SHOULD I DO IF MY CHILD IS ABSENT?

A. Please call our 24-hour attendance line before 9:00 a.m. on the day of the absence to report your childs absences.
When leaving this message, please leave your name and relationship to the student, childs name, grade, and reason for
absence. If no reason is provided, the absence will be characterized as unexcused.

Q. WHAT SHOULD I DO IF MY CHILD HAS AN APPOINTMENT DURING THE DAY AND I NEED TO PICK UP MY CHILD?
A. On the day of your childs appointment, write a note stating the time you would like to pick up your child from school
and the reason. Your child should take this note to the Student Services Office between 7:20 and 7:35 a.m. to secure a
pass to leave school. At the designated time, your child should show the pass to the teacher. Your child will be dismissed
to meet you in the office. You must come in the building to sign your child out. When your child returns from the
appointment, he or she must check back in at the office with a doctors note, when possible, before returning to class. If
your child does not return the same day, he/she should turn in the doctor/dental excuse to the school the following day,
or the parent may request that the note is submitted to the school by the doctor/dental office via fax. Parents should be
prepared to present a photo ID when signing their child out of Student Services.

Q. WHAT IF MY CHILD FORGETS SOMETHING AND I BRING IT TO SCHOOL?

A. Occasionally, a child will forget an item and need to have it delivered to him/her. If you bring in a forgotten item, you
may leave it in the office. Your child should check in the office between classes or at lunch. WE DO NOT CALL STUDENTS
DOWN TO THE OFFICE TO PICK UP FORGOTTEN ITEMS. These measures are taken so class interruptions are kept to a
minimum.

Q. WHAT IF MY CHILD FORGETS LUNCH MONEY OR DOES NOT HAVE MONEY IN THE CAFETERIA ACCOUNT?
A. When students do not have lunch money, they will be provided with a regular breakfast and/or lunch. The cost of these
meals will be added to the students account. Once an account reaches a negative balance equal to two meal charges (-
$4.00 paid lunch/-$.80 reduced paid lunch) the student will be offered a light breakfast and/or light lunch. These light
meals will be offered at no charge to the student.

Q. WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I MUST GET A MESSAGE TO MY CHILD DURING THE SCHOOL DAY?
A. In the event of an emergency, messages will be given to students. However, please make all necessary arrangements
about picking up students after school, after detention, after games and practices, etc., before your child comes to
school in the morning. ONLY EMERGENCY MESSAGES WILL BE TAKEN.
Q. HOW DO I GET HOMEWORK IF MY CHILD IS ABSENT?
Students are granted one day to make up missed work for each day they are absent. It is the responsibility of the student
to obtain missed assignments due to absences from school via Canvas and/or emailing teachers and to turn in
assignments due during the absence. Arrangements for making up missed tests must be made with the teacher. For
absences of more than one day, parents may leave a request for books on the Attendance line. Please have this request
before 9:00 AM on the day you plan to pick up the books. Books may be picked up in the front office before 3:15 PM.

Q. WHAT IF MY CHILD NEEDS TO RIDE A BUS OTHER THAN THE ONE TO WHICH HE OR SHE IS ASSIGNED?
A. This practice is not encouraged. Our bus routes are designed to carry a certain number of students. When added
individuals or a group decides to go home with another child, our buses can reach or exceed capacity. If an emergency
arises and no arrangements can be made other than for your child to ride a bus other than the one he or she is assigned,
please write a note stating which bus your child is to ride. Have your child bring the note to Student Services before
classes start in the morning. The office will then issue your child a bus pass.

Q. WHAT IF MY CHILD BECOMES SICK AT SCHOOL AND NEEDS TO GO HOME?

A. Students are sent to the Nurses Office when they become ill in class. The nurse will notify parents when it is
necessary for a child to go home. If your child calls you to report an illness, please be sure he/she is calling from the
Nurses Office. If he/she is not, please ask him/her to report to the nurse and then he/she will call you directly. It is very
important that the school has current phone numbers to reach parents. Please contact the office if updates are
necessary.

Q. WHAT IF I THINK MY CHILD SHOULD NOT PARTICIPATE IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION DUE TO ILLNESS?
A. A child may be excused from physical education for one day with a written parent request. Additional excused days
require a doctors note.

Q. HOW DO I SEND MEDICINE TO SCHOOL?

A. To safeguard the transportation of medication to and from school, all prescription and non-prescription medications
must be brought into the Nurses Office by a parent or guardian. Students are not permitted to carry any medications or
drugs. (See Medication for Chronic Disease or Medical Condition.) Any unused medication unclaimed by the parent on
the last day of school will be destroyed.

Q. CAN I BRING IN A BIRTHDAY CAKE OR OTHER TREATS FOR MY CHILD AT LUNCH?

A. Homemade food or food from outside vendors is not allowed to be consumed in the cafeteria during the school day.
