Overview:
Studentswillengageinathree-weekpoetryexplorationunitusingthethemeofwater.Theyhavebeen
studyingtheEarthsprocessofthewatercycleinscienceforthelasttwomonths.Throughoutthisunit,
studentswillbeintroducedtoWhatisPoetry?andwillparticipateinreadingdifferentformsofpoetry
thatcontaindifferentemotionsandfeelings.Duringthefirsttwodaysofthisunit,studentswillbuildon
theirbackgroundknowledgeastheygetanopportunitytoenjoyandappreciatepoetrytheylistentoand
read.Theywillrespondtopoetryindividuallyandingroups.Studentswillbrainstormandwritepoetry
usingupto5differentpoeticformsandstructure.Theywilllearnaboutdifferenttypesofpoeticforms,
Narrative,Funny,FreeVerse,Rhymed,IAM,Concrete,Rhymed,Acrostic,andDiamante.Theywillwrite
poemsusingtherulesandformulasthatapplytothespecificpoeticform.Studentswillpresentand
publishtheirpoemsattheendoftheunit.Studentswillfurtheranalyzeandcritiquepoemslaterinthe
unit.Thepoetrystudyunitisintendedtoteachastyleofwritingthatrevealsmeaningwhileusing
conciselanguage.Byteachingthecharacteristicsofpoems,studentswilltakerisksaswritersusing
theirownstyle.
