Introduction
The goal of this experiment is to be able to broadcast audio signals by using FM modulator and to retrieve
them on a spectrum analyzer. In addition, the students shall also be able to analyze FM radio Passband
signals and will be able to demodulate them and analyze the resultant baseband audio signals.

Note: Give brief and concise answers to questions where asked. Avoid giving lengthy answers
Task 1
Connect an audio signal source to the FM signal generator. Your audio source could be your very own
mobile phone. In such a case, use the audio to BNC connector cable.
Use the maximum possible amplitude of the signal. However, keep it under 2Vp-p (This is the input
limitation imposed by the signal generator). The amplitude of the audio signal can be increased by
increasing the volume on the cell phone.

Next set the carrier to 88.5MHz and set the frequency deviation to 75KHz.
Now use a cellphone FM receiver to tune to 88.5 MHz and listen to the audio signals.
Q. Increase and decrease the frequency deviation. What is the effect on audio reception quality.
Explain.
Remove the FM antenna, and connect the output of the FM modulator to the input of the spectrum
analyzer.
Q. Measure the bandwidth of the signal for different frequency deviations. Present at least 3
bandwidths. Include snapshot of your results.
Now connect the FM antenna to the input of the spectrum analyzer. Tune to 89 MHz or any channel of
your choice.
Now set the centre frequency to 89MHz or to the one you have choosen. Set span to zero. Go to CL and
turn on FM modulator and audio ON. Use correct squelch settings to receive audio.
Q. What is the function of squelch feature in audio and video paradigm? Give examples
