LESSON OUTCOMES
Unit Unit 18: Narrating Unforgettable Moments
Outcomes At the end of this unit, the students will be able to:
1) Narrate mishaps and unforgettable moments using role shift and depiction techniques;
2) Align eye gaze, facial adjectives and adverbs with the storyline;
3) Identify features learned within classic cultural narratives by Deaf storytellers.
Lesson Lesson 1: Pass, Throw and Spill
Outcomes At the end of this lesson, the students will be able to:
1) Incorporate role shift sequence from initiators view
2) Dramatize depiction of the object and the path of the object
3) Identify different facial adjectives/adverbs used in narratives
4) Integrate symbiotic relationship between eye gaze and object
5) Recognize and explain cultural value of depictive storytelling

LESSON PROCEDURE
Activity Description Length
Roll Call None, Good Morning
Opening/ Show & discuss different objects, ask how to sign each of the objects. Start
Review passing and throwing the objects to self and to students and show how to sign
what happened.
Teacher Show Signing Naturally DVD: Basic Role Shift: Outcomes A-E
Directed Areas of focus:
1) Eyegaze (object path),
2) Adjectives & Adverbs (facial grammar indicating speed of object) and
3) Role Shifting for passing, throwing and Spill from initiators view.
Guided Demonstrate paired dialogue for each:
Practice 1) PASS FLOWER
2) THROW BALL
3) SPILL LIQUID
4) Students practice describing what happened to each other.
Teacher moves among students and assesses student work. When done,
teacher reviews the PASS vs. THROW procedure, points out common errors
seen during guided practice and explains how to do them correctly.
Independent 6 pictures in PowerPoint. Student picks a card of picture and describes to
Practice other student. Answers the match card and PowerPoint
Cultural Return to classroom. Watch Dack Virning Deaf Man's ASL Storytelling,
Application "Snowman" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVXnRuRI1KA
and analyze for vocabulary, grammar, eyegaze, roleshifting and object path.
Pause video frequently and ask class questions about the story.
Closure Quickly ask students to share what theyve learned during class. Explain
upcoming assignment. Answer questions. Dismiss class.
Assessment Submit 30 seconds 1minute video via Google drive discussing their
experience with flowers, balls and water balloons. Must include role shifting,
adjectives & adverbs and eyegaze/path. Evaluate using a rubric

Student is very quiet and shy. Encourage dialogue and give support.
