TEACHING KNOWLEDGE TEST - English Plus Teacher Training

Course Outline
Description:
A 12 week course, consisting of:
-20 lessons of general English improvement +
-10 lessons of Teacher Training and Cambridge University TKT* Examination
Preparation per week.

General Aims:
To prepare students for the Cambridge TKT examination
To give students a strong foundation in the core areas of teaching knowledge needed in
the English language Teaching classroom.
To improve students overall level of English

Target groups:
Pre service teachers
Teachers who wish to refresh their Teaching knowledge
Teachers who are moving to teaching English from another subject

Entry Level:
New enrolments need to be at a level equivalent to or above Aspect Intermediate level, ALTE
level B1 or IELTS 4.5. Students are placed in an Aspect General English class appropriate to
their level.

Content and structure

General English Component
The General English courses use communicative English language teaching techniques to
concentrate on the four skills: listening, reading, speaking and writing. There is also a focus on
vocabulary development and pronunciation, in conjunction with practice and extension of
grammatical structures.

Teacher Training and TKT preparation Component.

Students cover 3 main syllabus areas-
1) Language and the background to language learning and teaching.
2) Lesson planning and use of resources for language teaching.
3) Managing the teaching and learning process.

Resources:
For the General English component the materials are as given for this course,
appropriate to the level.
For the teacher Training and TKT component extensive use is made of published EFL
textbooks and supplementary materials.

NEXUS
In addition, ELT journals and magazines are used, as well as videos of Computer
lessons, and
some classroom observations.

Assessment:
General English assessment is as given for all general English courses.
Practice TKT tests taken throughout the course.
Final Cambridge ESOL TKT Examination is taken at the end of the course.

Start Dates and Price

The first course will begin with the next Cambridge courses on September 19th 2005, at the
same time as the other PET/FCE/CAE/CPE/BEC exams. The course will be priced at the same
as the regular 2-12 wks price of NZ$365pw. The exam fee will be additional.

Mock Examination TKT Module 1

Weeks 4, 5 & 6
Principles of lesson planning and use and selection of resources for language teaching

Wk 4 Lesson planning writing plans and preparing lessons

Wk 5 Selection and use of resources / video observation
Wk 6 Practical application deliver own lesson to colleagues

Mock Examination TKT Module 2

Weeks 7, 8 & 9
Managing the Teaching and learning process

Wk 7 Teachers and learners language in the classroom

Wk 8 Techniques of classroom management
Wk 9 - Classroom Observation and research

Mock Examination TKT Module 3

Weeks 10, 11 & 12

Revision and consolidation

Wk 10 Module 1 revision / Video Observations

Wk 11 Module 2 revision / completion of TKT portfolio and record of personal choices
Wk 12 Module 3 revision / Full mock Examination of all modules.

Cambridge TKT Examination in all 3 modules taken on completion of the course.

First scheduled date December 10th 2005.
Exam fees TBC ( no more than $ 270 for all 3 modules)
