USE OF WORK PERMITS

For our own & others safety


Do we need a law to tell us that we must be safe???
Should we go beyond the law (the extra distance)???
What message are we sending across to the crew???

Self, Crew, Ship, Company, Job, Career, Money????

Permits are required to be fully completed & signed prior to certain tasks being carried out.

Safety Officer & Permits

Does not make the job safe


Acts as a guide & outlines a set procedure
Specified period of validity
Not to exceed 24 hours
Only work specified in the permit to be undertaken
Before signing the permit, the Responsible officer to check all items as marked in the Permit
are in order
On completion of the work the authorizing officer shall be notified
If any checklist contains the negative entry Master to be notified prior to deciding whether to
undertake the job

Following jobs require a Permit


Hot work / Reefer spaces / Over side
Electrical equipment / Aloft / Pre-diving/ Tank manhole open
Hot work/Enclosed space entry

Records for Permits


Filed in the SORB
Copies to be sent to the Company

Permits are a method of Risk Analysis & Management.


However Risk Analysis & Management must be carried out by all concerned, the extent
depending upon the type of task being carried out & on an ongoing basis.

Permits Vs Checklists
Checklist are used to ensure that critical / important
activities are carried out in a precise & complete manner
While
Permits are a form of checklist generally used for
critical/important operations

The main difference is that the permit is for specific period of time during which the operation
is carried out, the end of which indicates that the operation is completed.
