GUIDE TO REPORT WRITING

1. REPORT FORMAT
1.1 Cover page
Title of the report (Work Related Leaning at name of company (PVT) (LTD), by Name of
student (Reg No.,). A report submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of a
Bachelor of Science Honours Degree in Mining and Mineral Processing Engineering to
the Dept. of Mining and Mineral Processing Engineering, Midlands State University,
(Academic year). Name of Industrial Supervisor.
1.2 Roman numeral pages:
(dedication, acknowledgement), table of contents, summary of contents of the WRL
Report.
1.3 Contents of WRL report
1.3.1 Introduction
To include a brief history/background of company/organisation, line of business,
(products, markets etc.) and relevance of its operation to the world of science in general
and mining and mineral processing in particular.
1.3.2 Main Body
A detailed summary of the work covered per department/section during WRL placement
from mine development work, mine production work, technical services, hoisting, ore
handling and sampling, process control, mineral processing methods, product handling
and tailings disposal. Report should capture all Quality Assurance/Control and Safety,
Health and Environment activities carried out to ensure product realisation in sustainable
manner
Summary of the key and strong points/message to your WRL Report. This should be a
fusion of the introduction, the mining and mineral processes learnt and expectations of
the world of work versus the theory learnt in the lecture hall.
1.3.3 Recommendations
Only strong recommendations should be given. These should be based on observations
guided by the theory learnt from the lecture hall. Recommendations should be based on
facts and not perceptions or speculations.
2. GUIDING NOTES
2.1 Quality of writing
(i) Report format
(ii) Departmental House style/scientific norms
(iii) Good mastery of the reporting Language (grammar, content and use of appropriate
scientific terminology) is expected.
2.2 Formatting
Typeset Roman Numeral Times; Font size: 12. Double spacing, bolded non-underlined
headings (in caps) and subheading (in small case); Tables with Table titles on top and
framed column headers; Figs with chart titles underneath and done in excel, well
paragraphed prose report, proper in-text referencing, Listing of References in
alphabetical order. Minimum report size 40 pages.
2.3 WRL Company endorsement
All reports submitted should Bear Company stamps (endorsement) and be signed by the
company supervisor. Unstamped reports shall not be graded.
2.4 Due date for report and industrial assessment form
April intake: 30 November of the running year.
September intake: 30 June of the running year.
