Arterial Blood Gas

- An arterial blood gas analysis (ABG) measures the balance of oxygen and
carbon dioxide in the blood to see how well the lungs are working. It also measures the
acid-base balance in the blood. When there is an imbalance, the blood has too much acid
(acidosis) or too much base (alkalosis).

TESTS RANGE

pH 7.43 7.35-7.45 The pO2 stands for

pCO2 40mmHg 35-45 Partial Pressure of
pO2 (L) 76mmHg 80-100 Oxygen in the

pO2 levels may
indicate decreased
oxygen in the

decompensation. In
CVA, there is a
decrease level of
oxygen in the blood.

Calculated tests

BEecf (H) 2.2 The BEecf, HCO3-

HCO3 26.5 21-27 TCO2 concentration
TCO2 (H) 27.7 19-24 all serve as
SO2C 95 95-100 measures of the
metabolic
component of the
patient's acid-base
status, whereas
Pco2 evaluates
ventilation and

respiratory
component of the
acid-base status.
High values of
BEecf and TCO2
may indicate
metabolic alkalosis.
Vomiting can be a
factor leading to
metabolic alkalosis.
