DSM DYNEEMA FIBRE
COMPARISON
SK75
Proven fibre now being superseded by SK78 in Samson mooring systems
SK78
2-3 times higher resistance to creep elongation than SK75
Preferred HMPE fibre for LNG tanker moorings going forward
DM20
Newest HMPE fibre from DSM Dyneema (2012-2013)
Drastically reduced creep elongation
Ideally suited for permanent and semi permanent constant tension applications

SYNTHETIC FIBRE OPTIONS

HMPE
Advantages
Proven track record
Highest strength to weight ratio
Maximum fatigue life & abrasion resistance
Lightweight (ease of handling, SG < 1)
Reduced deck hardware damage
Disadvantages
Higher upfront cost compared to steel
Aramid
Advantages
Historically resistant to creep elongation (less true today HMPE advancements)
High strength to weight ratio
Reduced deck hardware damage
Disadvantages
SG > 1 (heavier / sinking)
Higher upfront cost compared to steel and HMPE
More susceptible to fatigue (bending & abrasion)
UV sensitivity higher than HMPE (Jacketed line required)

CREEP AND LNG MOORING

What is creep?
Irreversible fibre deformation resulting from a function of time, temperature
and tension
DSM Dyneema Creep Video
How has this been perceived historically for LNG operations?
TTI study
Time in port
Weather conditions
There is an appropriate HMPE fibre for mitigating creep concerns for LNG
mooring applications. Rope construction and mooring line maintenance
then become critical factors in determining service life.

MAIB INTERIM BULLETIN

Close-fitting jacketed synthetic fibre ropes with low

twist constructions are more prone to failure under
normal operating conditions
This is especially the case where the diameter to
diameter (D:d) ratio between a ships deck fittings and
its mooring ropes, is less than that recommended by
the ropes manufacturer.
The nature of the close-fitting jacket precludes visual
inspection of the ropes core for signs of degradation.
Operators of vessels using close-fitting jacketed
synthetic fibre mooring ropes are strongly advised to
contact the ropes manufacturer/supplier

Structure, Players involved & Our Involvement

OCIMFs published literature related to mooring lines has resulted in
the need for review/revision/consolidation

Guide to Purchasing HMSF Mooring Lines Effective Mooring

Developed in 2011-2012 as Mooring Equipment Guideline Condensed operator-focused brochure to
initial/temporary guidance in response to 3rd revision of guidelines (Published 2008) support vessel crews and terminal operators
TTI-lead HMPE Users Group project after that serve as a de-facto standard for dated and likely to be revised after MEG4 is
rash of Bridon failures vessel designers, shipyards, owners and completed

INSTALLATION CONSIDERATIONS

Inspect all surfaces prior to Synthetic rope life decreases

installing new rope when contacting sharp edges
Any surfaces / rough surfaces
Maintain contact surface
damaged by wire roughness less than 300
Rough cast surfaces / micro inch RMS
sharp machined Radius sharp edges to 2mm
or greater
edges
Key Locations are:
Panama/Roller leads
Capstans
Inside of Winch flanges
Dividing plate

INSUFFICIENT WRAPS
HAZZARD
Insufficient wraps will lead to
the ropes slipping on the drum.
This will generate heat and
damage the rope fibres.
In severe cases, this damage
will appear as a dark coloured,
hard glazed area on the rope

SAFE OPERATION IS KEY
DRIVER
Steel Wire
Heavy (7x the weight of synthetics)
Time consuming maintenance
Safety issues
Snapback zones
Fishhooks
Back/ muscle strains
Not acceptable for the new Panama Canal locks
Requires lubrication (potential for pollution)
Synthetics
LNG /LPG mooring systems utilize HMPE
Synthetics are the only acceptable mooring rope for the new Panama Canal locks
OCIMF recognizes HMPE as an acceptable substitute for wire
