ABSTRACT

Study of Land Use Change in Coastal Area of Sayung District, Demak

Regency.(Advisors : Johannes Hutabarat and Jusup Suprijanto).

Sayung is one of the coastal district in Demak Regency which currently

facing serious pressures from coastal damage and land use change, due to abrasion
and rob. This condition has made the loss of rice fields and fishponds, which belong
to the local communities. Regarding to that, the study of land use change along the
coastal area of Sayung, Demak is needed.
The goals of this research were to analyse the land use change (during
1991-2011), the coastline change (during 1991-2011) and abrasion (during 1995-
2011) that occurred along the coastal area of Sayung district,Demak Regency.
To reach the goals, time series of Landsat satellite imagesfromyear 1991,
1995, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2005, 2009, and 2011were used to map the changes. Image
processing was conducted by using Er Mapper 7.0 and ArcGIS 10.1 software. To
further analyse the changes of land use, coastline, and abrasion/rob in the study site,
satellite image were interpreted visually by on screen digitation, which followed by
ground check to validate it.
The results showed that there were landuse changes in Sayung due
toabrasion and rob. The landuse data on 1991 showed that Sayung has: rice fields
(53,2%), fishponds (23,98%), moor (11,03%), residential (7,64%), field (2,75%),
bush (0,88%) and mangrove (0,54%). Where the land use on 2011 showed that
Sayung has: fishponds (47,04%), rice fields (15,90%), residential(9,13%), mangrove
(2,06%), field (1,29%), moor (1,6%), and bush (0,29%).
It showed that the land use in Sayung were changes, where: fishpond
increased 1.218,02 ha (96,18%); rice field decreased 1.970 ha (70,11%); moor
decreased 514,7 ha (88,33%); residential increased 78,3 ha (19,42%); bush
decreased 31 ha (67,09%); field decreased 59,4 ha (42,1%) and mangrove increased
80 ha (278%). The coastline of Sayung district was also increased 9,70 km (103,6%)
during 1991-2011. Where in 1991 coastline length was 9,36 km, but then expand to
19,06 km in 2011.The area of abrasion in 1995 was 0,17% (8,8 ha); 1997 = 0,86%
(45,5 ha); 1999=2,48% (131,2 ha); 2001 = 3,8% (200,8 ha); 2005= 4,4% (234,6 ha);
2009= 16,6% ( 877,2 ha) and 2011= 22,7% or 1.198,8 ha.
