CPRI compression The difference in CPRI compression modes supported by macro and
mode LampSite eNodeBs is as follows:
l Macro eNodeBs support both common CPRI compression and
enhanced CPRI compression.
l LampSite eNodeBs support only common CPRI compression if
cell-level CPRI compression over optical ports is used between
BBUs and RHUBs.
For details, see related descriptions in the document.
2 Overview
2.1 Introduction
Complying with common public radio interface (CPRI) protocols, CPRI ports transmit
control-plane and user-plane data between a baseband unit (BBU) and remote radio units
(RRUs)/radio frequency units (RFUs) of macro eNodeBs or between a BBU/pRRU and an
RRU HUB (RHUB) of LampSite eNodeBs. (pRRU refers to pico remote radio unit.) User-
plane data is in-phase/quadrature (I/Q) data and consumes a large amount of CPRI bandwidth
resources in each cell.
To support more carriers or RRUs/RFUs/pRRUs on a CPRI port, the CPRI Compression
feature is introduced. This feature compresses the I/Q bit width and lowers the sampling rate
to reduce the CPRI bandwidth resources required by CPRI data transmission.
2.2 Benefits
CPRI compression is applied when CPRI bandwidth is insufficient. CPRI compression
provides the following benefits with CPRI bandwidth held constant:
l Extends carrier or RRU/RFU/pRRU specifications, as shown in Figure 2-1.
l Reduces the CPRI optical fibers or the CPRI Ethernet cables (only for LampSite
eNodeBs), thereby reducing capital expenditure (CAPEX), as shown in Figure 2-2 and
Figure 2-3.
Figure 2-2 Reducing CPRI optical fibers (using a macro eNodeB as an example)
Figure 2-3 Reducing CPRI Ethernet cables (only for LampSite eNodeBs)
The compression ratio specifies the ratio of bandwidth occupied by uncompressed data to
bandwidth occupied by compressed data. The following table lists the compression ratios
used by common and enhanced CPRI compression for different cell bandwidths.
3.1 Principles
CPRI compression applies to cells with the bandwidths of 20 MHz/15 MHz/10 MHz/5 MHz.
CPRI compression is implemented separately for the uplink and downlink.
l In the downlink, a BBU uses the CPRI compression algorithm to compress I/Q data. The
BBU transforms the data into CPRI frames and transmits these frames to an RRU/RFU
through optical fibers or electrical cables. Upon receiving these frames, the RRU/RFU
transforms them into compressed I/Q data, decompresses the data, and then transmits the
decompressed I/Q data to the downlink IF/RF module of the RRU. IF is short for
intermediate frequency.
l In the uplink, the compression principle is similar. The RF module performs CPRI
compression and framing, and then sends the CPRI frames to the BBU. The BBU
performs CPRI deframing and decompression.
Figure 3-1 illustrates uplink and downlink CPRI compression for macro eNodeBs.
Figure 3-1 Uplink and downlink CPRI compression for Macro eNodeBs
NOTE
CPRI payload bandwidth over an optical CPRI port = CPRI bandwidth x (15/16) x (4/5) =
0.75 x CPRI bandwidth
where
l The CPRI bandwidth equals the negotiated CPRI line rate. As defined in section 4.2.7 of
the CPRI Specification V5.0 released in September 2011, the CPRI bandwidth can be
2.4576 Gbit/s, 4.9152 Gbit/s, 6.144 Gbit/s, or 9.8304 Gbit/s.
l 15/16 is the CPRI-protocol-defined ratio of the I/Q data bandwidth to the total CPRI
bandwidth.
Figure 3-3 shows the structure of a basic frame at the CPRI line rate 2.4576 Gbit/s. The
leftmost part is reserved for the control word. The remaining 15 parts are occupied by the
I/Q data. Therefore, the ratio of the I/Q data bandwidth to the total CPRI bandwidth is
15/16.
Figure 3-3 Structure of a basic frame at the CPRI line rate 2.4576 Gbit/s
l 4/5 is the 8B/10B coding efficiency factor. In 8B/10B coding scheme, an 8-bit payload
data is converted to a 10-bit code for transmission.
Table 3-2 lists the mapping between CPRI bandwidths and CPRI payload bandwidths over a
CPRI port.

Bandwidth
Required I/Q data bandwidth = Number of antennas x 1T1R I/Q data bandwidth x Number of
cells over a CPRI chain
where
l The number of antennas is the greater one between the number of transmit antennas and
the number of receive antennas for each cell. For example, the number of antennas is 2
for a 2T2R cell and 4 for a 2T4R cell.
l The 1T1R I/Q data bandwidth depends on cell bandwidths, and is listed in the 1T1R I/Q
Data Bandwidth Without CPRI Compression column of 3.2 Cell-Level CPRI
Compression.
l The number of cells over a CPRI chain equals the total number of cells over a CPRI
chain.
Table 3-1 lists the 1T1R I/Q data bandwidths after common and enhanced CPRI compression
are enabled.
4.1 Principles
CPRI compression is implemented separately for the uplink and downlink and consists of two
phases.
l In the downlink, the first phase uses optical port-based transmission from the BBU to the
RHUB and the second phase uses electrical port-based transmission from the RHUB to
pRRUs. In the first phase, the BBU compresses the I/Q data using the CPRI compression
algorithm, performs CPRI framing, and then sends the CPRI frames to the RHUB over
optical fibers. In the second phase, the RHUB compresses the received CPRI frames and
then sends them to the pRRUs over Ethernet cables. Upon receiving the CPRI frames
from the RHUB, the pRRUs perform CPRI deframing and decompression, and then send
the decompressed I/Q data to the downlink RF/IF module.
l In the uplink, the compression principle is similar. In the first phase, the pRRUs perform
CPRI compression and framing, and then send the CPRI frames to the RHUB. In the
second phase, the RHUB compresses the received CPRI frames and then sends them to
the BBU.
The first and second phases can have the same or different CPRI compression ratios, in the
uplink or downlink. Figure 4-1 illustrates uplink and downlink CPRI compression for
LampSite eNodeBs.
Figure 4-1 Uplink and downlink CPRI compression for LampSite eNodeBs
LampSite eNodeBs only support cell-level CPRI compression and transparent CPRI
transmission and do not support sector-level CPRI compression.
NOTE
In transparent CPRI transmission, the RHUB does not compress or decompress data but transparently
transmits I/Q data.
NOTE
Optical ports on LampSite eNodeBs support cell-level common CPRI compression only and do not
support cell-level enhanced CPRI compression.
In a LampSite eNodeB, the rate over the optical ports between a BBU and an RHUB can be 4.9152
Gbit/s or 9.8304 Gbit/s.
CPRI payload bandwidth supported by the electrical port is calculated in the same
way as that for macro eNodeBs. For details, see 3.4.1 CPRI Payload Bandwidth
over an Optical or Electrical CPRI Port. The CPRI bandwidth over the electrical
port is 1.2288 Gbit/s. You can also query the CPRI payload bandwidth over the
electrical port from Table 4-2.
I/Q data bandwidths occupied by cells of other radio access technologies are listed
in Table 4-3.
2. I/Q CPRI data bandwidth after CPRI compression in the default compression ratio of
2:1. For details, see Table 4-1 in 4.2.2 CPRI Compression over Electrical Ports.
3. I/Q CPRI data bandwidth after CPRI compression in a compression ratio of 3:1. For
details, see Table 4-1 in 4.2.2 CPRI Compression over Electrical Ports.
4. I/Q CPRI data bandwidth after CPRI compression in a compression ratio of 4:1. For
details, see Table 4-1 in 4.2.2 CPRI Compression over Electrical Ports.
Determine the target compression ratio based on the bandwidth comparison result.
l 1 2: Select the compression ratio of 2:1.
l 2 > 1 3: Select the compression ratio of 3:1.
l 3 > 1 4: Select the compression ratio of 4:1.
l 4 > 1: When this happens, the remaining bandwidth is insufficient for LTE cells even if
the compression ratio of 4:1 is selected. Therefore, deploy two Ethernet cables between
RHUBs and pRRUs.

l If the default compression ratio 2:1 is used, the I/Q data bandwidth required by the LTE
FDD cell is 921.6 Mbit/s (460.8 Mbit/s x 2) based on Table 4-1. The remaining CPRI
payload bandwidth per electrical port is 783.36 Mbit/s (921.6 Mbit/s 69.12 Mbit/s
2) based on Table 4-2 and Table 4-3. In this situation, the remaining CPRI payload
bandwidth is insufficient for the LTE FDD cell, and therefore two Ethernet cables are
required between the RHUB and pRRU.
l If the compression ratio 3:1 is used, the I/Q data bandwidth required by the LTE FDD
cell is 614.4 Mbit/s (307.2 Mbit/s x 2) based on Table 4-1. The remaining CPRI payload
bandwidth per electrical port is 783.36 Mbit/s (921.6 Mbit/s 69.12 Mbit/s 2) based
on Table 4-2 and Table 4-3. In this situation, the remaining CPRI payload bandwidth is
sufficient for the LTE FDD cell, and therefore only one Ethernet cable is required
between the RHUB and pRRU.
As indicated in the example, a higher compression ratio for CPRI compression over the
electrical port produces a better compression effect. If the default compression ratio 2:1
cannot meet the bandwidth requirements, use the compression ratio 3:1 or 4:1 so that the
remaining CPRI payload bandwidth can meet the required I/Q data bandwidth. In this way,
only one Ethernet cable is required between the RHUB and pRRU, thereby reducing network
deployment costs.
Table 4-4 shows the I/Q data bandwidth required for 1T1R transmission after the data on a
carrier of a sector equipment group is compressed over optical and electrical ports when
EuSectorEqmGroup.SectorGroupLinkCompression is set to
NORMAL_3_TO_1_COMPRESSION or NORMAL_4_TO_1_COMPRESSION.

Determine the compression ratio for cells whose bandwidth is 20 MHz or 15 MHz as follows:
If 4 > 1, the remaining bandwidth over the electrical port is insufficient for LTE cells even if
the 4:1 compression ratio is used. Deploy two Ethernet cables between RHUBs and pRRUs.
If 4 > 2, the remaining bandwidth over the optical port is insufficient for LTE cells even if the
4:1 compression ratio is used. Change the rate of the optical fibers. If the rate of the optical
fiber is already 9.8304 Gbit/s, adjust the compression ratio of other carriers.

cell-level CPRI compression over electrical ports is not under license control.
Transparent compression of LampSite eNodeBs is not under license control.
Other Requirements
The following table provides cell bandwidth requirements.
7.4.2 Precautions
l If CPRI compression-related parameters are set or modified in an activated cell, the cell
will be reactivated and services will be interrupted. Before changing the value of this
parameter for cells served by RRUs in the same RRU chain or ring, ensure that all cells
served by the RRU chain or ring are deactivated. Activate the cells after you change the
parameter value.
l When a UBBPd/UBBPe is used:
Macro eNodeBs:
The CPRI compression modes can be different for RRUs over a CPRI chain. For
example, CPRI compression can be enabled for one RRU but disabled for another
RRU. Figure 7-1 shows an example.
If an RRU serves multiple cells and supports enhanced CPRI compression, the
CPRI compression modes can be different for cells served by the RRU. Specifically,
common CPRI compression, enhanced CPRI compression, or no compression can
be used by each cell. If the RRU does not support enhanced CPRI compression, the
CPRI compression modes must be the same for all cells served by the RRU. Figure
7-2 shows an example.
LampSite eNodeBs:
The cell-level CPRI compression modes over optical ports can be different for cells
over a CPRI chain. Specifically, CPRI compression can be enabled in one cell but
disabled in another cell. Figure 7-3 shows an example.
The transparent compression modes can be different for sector equipment groups
over a CPRI chain. Specifically, a CPRI chain supports CPRI compression in a
compression ratio of 3:1 or 4:1 for each sector equipment group. Figure 7-4 shows
an example.
The CPRI compression modes can be different over a CPRI chain. Specifically, a
CPRI chain supports cell-level CPRI compression over optical ports and transparent
compression. Figure 7-5 shows an example.
If a pRRU is configured with multiple cells, the cell-level CPRI compression modes
over electrical ports can be different for cells over a CPRI chain. Specifically, if the
bandwidth is unlimited, a CPRI chain supports CPRI compression in a compression
ratio of 2:1, 3:1, or 4:1 for each cell. Figure 7-6 shows an example.
The CPRI compression modes can be different over an Ethernet cable between an
RHUB and a pRRU. Specifically, an Ethernet cable supports cell-level CPRI
compression over electrical ports and transparent compression. Figure 7-8 shows
an example.
If an RRU serves multiple cells, the CPRI compression modes must be the same for
all cells served by the RRU. Figure 7-10 shows an example.
When the CPRI Compression feature is enabled, set CPRIEX to ON(On) if the
bandwidth required by a CPRI chain after CPRI compression is greater than 6.144
GHz and the CPRI bandwidth (that is, the negotiated line rate of the CPRI chain) is
9.8 GHz.
If CPRIEX is set to ON(On), CPRI compression must be enabled for all the cells
over the CPRI chain and only CPRI ports 0, 1, and 2 can be used.
NOTE
You can run the MOD BBP and LST BBP commands to modify and query the value of
CPRIEX, respectively.
LampSite eNodeBs:
If the CPRI bandwidth is greater than 4.9152 Gbit/s, the cell-level CPRI
compression modes over optical ports can be different for cells over a CPRI chain.
Specifically, CPRI compression can be enabled in one cell but disabled in another
cell. Figure 7-11 shows an example.
If the CPRI bandwidth is greater than 9.8304 Gbit/s, the cell-level CPRI
compression modes over optical ports must be the same for all cells over a CPRI
chain. Figure 7-12 shows an example.
If CPRIEX is set to ON(On), cell-level CPRI compression over optical ports must
be enabled for all the cells on the CPRI chain and only CPRI ports 0, 1, and 2 can
be used.
NOTE
You can run the MOD BBP and LST BBP commands to modify and query the value of
CPRIEX, respectively.
(Optional) The following table describes the parameter that must be set in the
eUCellSectorEqm MO to configure sector-level CPRI compression in SFN scenarios.
The following table lists the parameters that must be set in the EuSectorEqmGroup MO to
enable transparent compression for LampSite eNodeBs.

ENHANCED_COMPRESSION
Default Value: NO_COMPRESSION(No
Compression)
Cell CpriEth ADD None None Meaning: Indicates the compression ratio of data
Compre CELL transmitted on the CPRI port over Ethernet for an
ssionRat MOD MPRU aggregation cell. Data compression on the
io CELL CPRI port over Ethernet reduces the bandwidth of
LTE data on the Ethernet cable between the RHUB
LST and MPRUs, and therefore the Ethernet cable supports
CELL more carriers of different RATs. The parameter values
2_TO_1, 3_TO_1, and 4_TO_1 indicate ratios of 2:1,
3:1, and 4:1 respectively.
GUI Value Range: 2_TO_1(2:1 Compression),
3_TO_1(3:1 Compression), 4_TO_1(4:1
Compression)
Unit: None
Actual Value Range: 2_TO_1, 3_TO_1, 4_TO_1
Default Value: 2_TO_1(2:1 Compression)
