Corporate Social Responsibility, often abbreviated "CSR, is a management concept whereby


companies integrate social and environmental concerns in their business operations and
interactions with their stakeholders. CSR is generally understood as being the way through which
a company achieves a balance of economic, environmental and social imperatives (Triple-
Bottom-Line- Approach), while at the same time addressing the expectations of shareholders
and stakeholders.

CSR may also be referred to as "corporate citizenship" and can involve incurring short-term
costs that do not provide an immediate financial benefit to the company, but instead promote
positive social and environmental change.

The International Organization for Standardizations Guidance Standard on Social


Responsibility, ISO 26000, published in 2010, says:

Social responsibility is the responsibility of an organization for the impacts of its decisions and
activities on society and the environment, through transparent and ethical behavior that:

Contributes to sustainable development, including the health and the welfare of society

Takes into account the expectations of stakeholders

Is in compliance with applicable law and consistent with international norms of behavior,
and

Is integrated throughout the organization and practiced in its relationships.

Jollibee Foods Corporation


Jollibee Foods Corporation (JFC) espouses the principle of shared value in its corporate social
responsibility (CSR) activities. As a company in the food industry, JFC through its CSR arm, the
Jollibee Foundation, implements programs that address access to education, livelihood
development, leadership development and disaster response, issues that are also of relevance to
the companys core business.

Jollibee Foundations Busog, Lusog, Talino (BLT) brings together local education stakeholders
and JFC employee volunteers to mitigate hunger and undernourishment, widely attributed causes
of school attendance decline and drop-out among lower grade pupils. Daily lunch is provided to
below normal weight-for-age Grades 1 & 2 pupils with food prepared by parent groups following
menus developed by Jollibee Foundation. The parents also attend seminars on food safety,
cooking, health and nutrition. For SY 2008-2009, BLT is being implemented in 54 public
elementary schools benefiting 1,822 pupil beneficiaries. Pupils exhibit marked improvements in
weight and attendance while their parents show improved budgeting and menu preparation skills
as well as knowledge on nutrition.

Aside from education, Jollibee Foundation also has initiatives in livelihood, leadership
development and provides assistance in times of calamities.

Coca-Cola
Coca-Cola has responded to the humanitarian crisis in the Philippines by suspending advertising
and reallocating its budget to disaster relief programs.

Casualty figures for Typhoon Haiyan have set a modern record for Southeast Asia; over 5,235
people lost their lives, and at least 4.2 million people have been displaced from their homes. It
struck in early November is among the strongest ever recorded. There is an estimated US$5.8
billion in storm damage to homes and infrastructure.

We wish to express our heartfelt solidarity to all Filipinos in these difficult times, Carlos
Salazar Lomeln, said Chief Executive Officer of Coca-Cola FEMSA, the bottling company of
the Philippines. It is in times like these when the Philippines sets an example of resilience and
good spirit, and where our values of supporting ourselves as a team come at its best.

This is a shining example of corporate social responsibility a great marketing tool.

Coca-Cola FEMSA gained bottling and distribution rights in the Philippines last year in a $689
million transaction with another local bottler. FEMSA is the largest producer of Coke products
worldwide, and is now increasing its Philippine manufacturing capability by acquiring the assets
of other beverage makers.

Consumption of Coca-Cola products in the Philippines is higher than most of Asia, and it is one
of Cokes 10 biggest markets worldwide in terms of volume sales.

Philippine National Bank


The Philippine National Bank aspires to live up to the trust and regard it has been bestowed upon
by the Filipino people. One of the ways the Bank intends to do this is by being a good and
responsible corporate citizen that contributes to the countrys sustainable development, respects
the interests and promotes the wellbeing of its various stakeholders, and creates value in
everything it does.

For PNB, social responsibility is a commitment that begins with the exercise of sound and fair
corporate practices. The Bank ensures that its entire business is conducted according to rigorous
professional, ethical, regulatory, and legal standards. PNB strives to adhere to high standard of
integrity, courtesy, and fairness as defined in its various corporate policies and frameworks. At
the same time, social responsibility is a commitment that is shared by everyone in PNB.
Empowering Filipinos through Education
Empowering the youth and other identified sectors of Philippine society through education and
other relevant development programs such as financial literacy is a key component of the Banks
CSR goals and programs. The Bank strongly believes in investing in the future through the
provision of educational opportunities to deserving youth as well as propagating thrift, self-
sufficiency and economic empowerment through financial literacy program.

Protecting the Environment


PNB is deeply committed to the cause of environmental protection as it is an issue that affects all
mankind. The Bank sees its active involvement in protecting the environment as crucial
contributions towards attaining the wider goal of sustainable development.

Commitment to Philanthropic Initiatives


As a corporate citizen, PNB shall undertake various community/social and philanthropic
activities to uplift the lives of the Filipino people by giving donations to selected charities,
communities, schools, etc., for various projects on infrastructure improvement and social
development including critical assistance in times of calamities and disasters.

San Miguel Corporation


At the forefront of Philippine business for well over a century, San Miguel Corporation has been
one of the earliest proponents of corporate philanthropy and social responsibility. As one of the
original conveyors of Philippine Business for Social Progress, the 125-year old conglomerate is
one of the leading lights when it comes to CSR, having time and again gone beyond standard
corporate social responsibility practices.

Now more than ever, the company recognizes its affirmed responsibility of being a catalyst of
progress and change. In what is still the highest CSR spend by a Philippine conglomerate, San
Miguel has spent over P1 billion on CSR from 2012-2014its housing project for families
displaced by Typhoon Sendong and Typhoon Yolanda accounting for virtually the entire amount.

Recognizing that the breadth of our business portfolio and extent of our resources put us in a
unique position to make a difference for many, San Miguel, through the San Miguel Foundation,
focuses on empowering communities and reaching out to underprivileged sectors of society by
educating and giving them a means of livelihood.

Our hope is that with our help, the marginalized poor can become part of the larger Philippine
growth story.

Education
A priority social cause to which we have committed ourselves for the long term is education.
Believing firmly in educations power to transform lives, our advocacy covers not only the
granting of scholarships but also the improvement of the quality of education through programs
that benefit public schools and educators.

About 820 scholars enrolled in elementary, high school, college, and technical-vocational
courses; who are supported by SMC subsidiaries San Miguel Brewery Inc., SMC Global Power,
San Miguel Pure Foods Co. Inc., San Miguel Yamamura Packaging Corporation, Ginebra San
Miguel Inc. and SMITS Inc.

Scholarship grants cover tuition, books, school supplies, and allowances. For 20 engineering
graduates last year, the grants also included financial support for their engineering licensure
board review.

Petron Corporation, through its Petron Foundation Inc. (PFI), also provided scholarships to 2,018
students in elementary, high school, and college, through its Tulong Aral ng Petron scholarship
program.

Supporting literacy and access to better-equipped educational facilities


Through our continuing partnership with non-profit AGAPP Foundation (Aklat, Gabay, Aruga,
tungo sa Pag-Angat at Pag-Asa), we turned over 50 new classrooms-cum-libraries to various
public schools in poor barangays and are constructing 68 more classrooms. To date, SMC and its
subsidiaries have turned over a total of 191 AGAPP classrooms over the last five years.

In support of the Department of Educations efforts to further advance the quality of education,
PFI, for its part, continued to work with the DepEd and USAID to support Basa Pilipinas (Read
Philippines), which aims to improve the reading skills of one million early grade students. The
program also included providing technical assistance to DepEd on language and literacy
improvement for first- to third-grade students in the Ilocos region and Central Visayas.

The past year also saw the ninth year of the Youth in Entrepreneurship and Leadership
Development (YIELD) program, through which Petron gave 100 students the opportunity to
spend their summer learning about operations at Petron service stations.

Health and Nutrition


Through our community clinics and medical missions, we continue to provide our host
communities better access to healthcare services. In 2014, more than 8,000 individuals benefited
from healthcare services offered for free at SMB community clinics in Polo, San Fernando,
Davao and Mandaue, SMPFCs community clinic in Sumilao, and the Petron Community Health
Center in Pandacan.
These facilities, though small in scale, provide specialist care, particularly for patients suffering
from diabetes, tuberculosis and other cardiovascular diseases.

The missions, which reached 12,000 patients in 2014, have enabled medical practitioners to
take that first huge step in reaching out to patients in many parts of the country. By helping
alleviate their suffering, the people know they are not alone, Dr. Elaine Adapon says.

We also sustained our supplemental feeding programs, particularly Malusog na Katawan,


Matalas na Isipan, with SMB Inc., SMC Global Power and SMYPC, and SMPFCs Handog
Lusog Nutrisyon para sa Nasyon, which benefited nearly 7,000 public school students.

Environment
As our businesses and our future growth depend so much on natural resources, we continue to
implement programs advocating the preservation of our environment and the responsible use of
resources.

In 2014, SMC, through SMC Global Power, signed a covenant with the local government of
Sual, Pangasinan committing to provide residents with one million seedlings of coconut, coffee,
and cacao. To be distributed over the span of one year, the seedlings, when ready for harvest, will
serve as additional source of livelihood for residents.

San Miguel Brewery, in partnership with the Armed Forces of the Philippines, also continued its
flagship environment project, Trees Brew Life. Under the banner Buhayin ang Kalikasan,
SMB has to date planted around 500,000 trees nationwide.

Likewise, Petron continued to support the Department of Environment and Natural Resources
National Greening Program, which aims to plant 1.5 billion trees from 2011 to 2016. To help
meet this target, Petron conducted tree and mangrove planting activities in all its terminals and
depots throughout the country.

Petron also continued to implement its projects aimed at protecting our water resources, foremost
of which is its Integrated Coastal Management Program in Bataan, done in partnership with the
provincial government and the United Nations Development Programs Partnerships on
Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia.

The year also saw the completion of Petrons five-year partnership with the Municipality of
Malay, Aklan and Boracay Foundation Inc. for the Boracay Beach Management Program, geared
towards the protection, preservation and enhancement of the island.
Petron continued its partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources to
support the Adopt-an-Estero program. In 2014, it completed the second phase of the
rehabilitation of the Concepcion Creek, a major tributary of the Marikina River. Petrons
nationwide network of facilities have also instituted their own Adopt-an-Estero activities.

From 2012 to 2014, the company has spent over P1 billion on housing for typhoon victimsthe
biggest CSR spend by a single company in Philippine history.

Housing and rehabilitation


Our housing program for victims of major calamities is an important part of our CSR agenda.

Shierley Siarot, who in the last three years has been living in Xavier Ecoville, one of the housing
projects we built for victims of Typhoon Sendong in 2012 in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan City,
shares: My family and I are thankful for having this home. It feels good to be part of a
community where everyone gets along and shows concern for one another.

Shirley and her neighbors are all survivors from riverside communities in CDO that were wiped
out by Typhoon Sendong. Today, they live in a community that has a livelihood center, multi-
purpose hall, daycare center, wet market, basketball court and chapel.

Our work, however, continues. At present, much of the focus is on completing houses for
survivors of Typhoon Yolanda. These consist of 1,390 houses for the towns of Palo, Javier and
San Miguel in Leyte. Thus far, 242 houses in Javier are ready to be turned over while 42 others
are under construction. The Foundation continues to work closely with local government units in
identifying viable sites for the new communities San Miguel is set to build.
