(EAPP)
Course Syllabus

The subject, English for Academic and Professional Purposes (EAPP) focuses instruction on
skills required to perform in an English-speaking academic context across core subject areas
generally encountered in a university setting.
Course Learning Objectives
At the completion of the course, the students will be able to improve in the following areas:
Reading

1. Predict the main idea and point out the specific details of the text through reading
comprehension;
2. Recognize formal and informal use of the English language in texts provided;
3. Demonstrate a working knowledge of pre-reading strategies;
4. Understand the writers purpose in the readings given; and
5. Define specific vocabulary encountered in the contexts;

Writing and Grammar

1. Utilize grammar professionally through their written outputs;


2. Apply proper subject verb agreement, rules on verb tenses, and other grammatical
principles;
3. Appropriate adjective and adverb use in write ups, essays, and compositions;
4. Be able to proofread, edit, and revise anothers or ones own essay or write-up; and
5. Use structural conventions of written English to compose essays and compositions

Across multiple language domains


1. Acquire and use new academic vocabulary;
2. Demonstrate an at-level knowledge of grammar in reading and writing;
3. Understand varying inconsistencies between pronunciation and spelling;
4. Accurately compose moderately complex sentences to connect ideas in written discourse;
and
5. Identify written language patterns (sequential events, cause and effect, compare and
contrast, and problem/solution narratives.)

Activity: Writing a descriptive text based on a chosen topic

a) Using descriptive language

c) Description by Detail and Specification

Expository Writing

Activity: Writing an informative report based on a chosen topic

a) Types of exposition (Cause and Effect, Sequence, Comparison, Classification,


and Definition)

b) Usage of Transitional Expressions

c) Writing based on given statistics, authoritative opinions, and actual incidents.
