Station wagons are sometimes forgotten about and Dave Gais-

ford shared his rare Ford Gran Torino station wagon with us. We
also feature a Mercury Cougar convertible from Secunda and a
scary looking black 1969 Chrysler.

This years rst Inner City Muscle Show was held at the V A Wa-
terfront in Cape Town and was part of the eXtreme Games event.
In our Corvette article, Hennie Bosman talks about his love for
these cars and what he has done to make her perform better on
the track.

We take time out to go with the new Pretoria Street Rod Club on
their rst garage hop in Pretoria. What a wonderful experience
Any other clubs who are planning a garage hop, send us your
photos of what you saw and all the places visited.

In our model car pages, Gerhard tackles the suspension and other
modications of the Deuce coupe highboy. Share your story and
photos of your model car project with us.

Dear SAHR
READERS RIDES Here are some pictures of a 64 Morris Minor rebuild. I wanted to bring some old
school look to this car of the 60s period. Having grown up in the 60s and going
to school in my Old Ladys Morris Minor, I have memories of sneaking the car
out at night with pals and trying to roll the old Morris and, having ridden the tyres
off the rims in an attempt to roll it, brought back memories of this iconic car. Hav-
ing found the body shell in Utrecht, then nding bits and pieces, we eventually
started working on the body and preparing it for a paint job (Audi Metallic Black).
We started getting somewhere with the Morris.

Throwing out the old Morris 1000 motor and putting an Austin Marina 1500
motor in, coupled to the Morris Minor 4-speed box, we were looking good. The
cylinder head was done; ported, polished, gas-owed, bigger valves and double
valve springs, performance branches put on, side-raft carb, hi-lift cam and a
Bruten performance exhaust system sorted the engine out.

Wheels were 14 inch Audi mags; all-new red upholstery seats, carpeting, wood-
rim steering and gauges were tted. With all this done, it really made this little
car something special. A lot of chrome was put on - even the grill was chromed.

The little Morris made many a lightie in their Golfs think twice. What a trip
down memory lane this little car took us on.

Thanks for the wonderful magazine, which really put Hot Rodding back on the
road in SA.
Yours faithfully, Des Wade

I have grown up around Volvos, my Dad owns
one as well as my uncles and cousins, so natu-
rally I like Volvos and always wanted my own to
do up my way. After looking endlessly for a de-
cent body, I eventually ended up buying my aunts
Volvo from Pietermaritzburg. I have had her for 4
years now and she is a work in progress.

She is a 1970 Volvo 122S. The engine is stock

standard for now, a Volvo B20 engine, (2 Litre,
4 cylinder, Twin SU Carbs). My plans in the next
year or so is to work the current engine by or-
dering some performance parts such as street
torque cams, upgrade brakes etc., when I have
the budget. All big ideas but slowly ticking them
off my list as time goes by.

The paintwork was originally yellow but this

has been changed to graphite grey which was
one of the original colours when they were
manufactured. I have dropped the suspension
50mm; new springs were manufactured for me
by Springrite in Pinetown, Durban. I have also
added an extra exhaust pipe and centred them;
originally the Volvos only came with a really thin
single exhaust. This was done by Piper Racing
in Durban, although I have not done the mani-
fold as yet, but this is also in the pipeline.

Other extras which I have done over the years

was mainly engine parts to get the car running
again such as fuel pumps, carb repair kits etc.
I ordered and tted original wing mirrors as this
particular car had none when I purchased it and
included a small sound system.

I had the original Volvo mag 15 inch and I was

running 205/60/15 tyres, however, just last week
Thursday my new wheels arrived. I ordered from
Vision Wheels, Legend 5 Series (Gun metal with
a machined lip). These are 17 inch and I am cur-
rently running 215/45/17 tyres on them.

Interior is still basically stock standard, I have

tted a smaller steering wheel but the seats are
still original vinyl, they do require some work
here and there which I am working on.

Regards Kamil Ramlaul

was gutted and torn down to the bare
bone, a motor, 2 wheels and some of
the frame.

Rory cut the rear tubes and custom fab-

ricated the hard tail steelwork, radically
lowering the bike and giving it the classic
sit in on down rather than sit way on
top look. He hand formed the tiny seat
and with some sneaky grinding, bend-
ing and welding, knocked up a cool set
of his favourite frisco-style bars. Miss
Daisy was dead and Gomez started to
come to life

The front fender vanished permanently,

as did all the restrictive crud inside the
exhaust pipes which then necessitated
a trip down to the dyno to have the carbs
re-jetted and the timing tweaked. Next
question, what to put behind the saddle?

Rory rode without a rear fender for a

while, causing havoc for motorists in
peak hour trafc, while he pondered
the problem, what to put out back? It
was a no brainer, after a trip to the scrap
yard yielded the perfect piece in shape
and prole, a 1970s Honda CB 500
back fender. The ow from the tank to
the rear tyre was complete and a minor
modication to the fender and the fabri-
cation of a tough bracket, saw the nal
piece of the puzzle slotted into place.

Rory sprayed Gomez matt black,

scuffed some minor chrome, polished
all the rest and then laid on some red
pin striping. Gomez was done

As Gomez is Rorys only transport, the

bike gets ridden seven days a week,
Monday to Friday to work and back and
anywhere and everywhere on week-
ends. The bike is awesome to ride and
the theme is perfectly complimented by
its sight and sound

Ask Rory about the custom Chop-

per scene and he will literally roar with
laughter - case in point, one morning
he parked Gomez outside a well-known
American Motorcycle franchise, right
next to a huge, shiny long Chopper. The
24 SAHR
owner of said shiny machine was highly put out when half the staff
came out to look at Gomez, asking Rory questions about his bike
and making comments about how killer it looked

The owner of the big shiny superstore bike told Rory that hed
paid 250k to buy his bike and had spent a further 50k on custom-
izing it, plus even more for the matching boots, jackets (personal-
ized) helmets etc. He said he was waiting for his son to bring the
new trailer to fetch it as they were heading down to Margate for
the annual Harley Davidson Rally. What a joke

Rory would like to thank SAHR for exposing some of these un-
derground Chops, thus providing ideas, inspiration and encour-
agement to all the guys who build at home, on small budgets
and really ride their machines and want something as unique and
individual as their personalities. They are not chequebook Char-
lie poser execs, who trailer their toys everywhere; trying to buy
their way into some perceived Chopper (mines bigger and cost
more than yours) lifestyle. Strong views here

Rory would also like to thank his Mom, Dad, the Wifey and all his
buds. A big thanks to Retha from Dream Creative Studio for the
awesome pics.

The major signicant difference be-

only cosmetic, wheelbase and weight

fake wood trim, electric windows, air

American built bikes at the time. By the

1950s, more Triumphs were sold in
the U.S. than any other country hands
down. Triumph had their own version of
the big bike, and its the stuff of legends
the Triumph Thunderbird.

When Triumph released their 650cc ver-

tical-twin Thunderbird in 1950; their rac-
ing legacy was off and running. Right
away Triumph became the bike of
choice for many serious riders, again
because of its lightweight, speed and
maneuverability on the track and off-
road. They soon cemented themselves
as an iconic motorcycle brand in the
U.S., setting new standards for the rap-
idly growing sport.

The Triumph Bonneville bike has

been an undeniable legend for over
50 years. Its namesake is a tribute to
Johnny Allens 193mph world record
run at the Bonneville Salt Flats back in
1955 in a normally aspirated 650cc Tri-
umph powered streamliner called The
Devils Arrow. 1956 brought an unof-
cial record at Bonneville for Stormy
Magnum Jack Wilson, and Johnny Allen
streamliner, The Texas Cee-Gar. Yup,
these were Texas boys and darn
proud. Theyd tell you that Triumphs
were made in Great Britain but made
better in Texas Obviously the Bonnev-
ille impact on racing was huge. It was
SAHR 55
TRIUMPH an immensely critical building block for many motorcycle
land speed world records and attempts.

1953 Triumph Blackbird

Racing at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah held huge ad-
vantages but there were also huge consequences to be
paid if something went wrong at those speeds. If you re-
member Rollie Free, you know that back in the day, rid-
ers would strip down to just the essentials; tted bathing
suit, sneakers, goggles and helmet, in an effort to combat
wind resistance and gain critical speed. Back around 1953,
18-year-old Tommy Smith was doing just that for a speed
record attempt aboard a Triumph Thunderbird. The Triumph
started to wobble and disaster struck as he lost control of
the bike at around 130 mph. Poor little Tommy ended up
with one catastrophic case of road rash that took him two
years to recover from. Since then, racers have been re-
quired to wear leathers on high speed rides at Bonneville.

James Dean is often knocked for attempting to emulate

Marlon Brando by hopping on the motorcycle bandwag-
on but thats just not true. Dean had been riding since he
was a kid back in Indiana farm country. His rst bike was
a Czech built CZ (ceska zbrojowka or Czechoslovakian
weapon factory in English). In 1948 the rst series of CZ
350 ccs appeared in the frame used by the 250 cc. The mo-
tor had at pistons, reverse ow and a capacity of 358cc.
The top speed was underwhelming by todays standards at
65 mph. When he later bought a new Triumph, Dean sold
this bike back to the dealer.

Triumphs Bonneville celebrated its 50th birthday in 2008,

and celebrate it did, releasing two unique one-off designs
for the Bonneville. Each was created in a unique collabora-
tion between Ewan McGregor and Belstaff.

According to Triumph, The Bonneville still remains an in-

disputable icon, a symbol of rebellion and individuality and
still inspires loyalty and emotion in everyone that rides it.
Todays Bonneville is an agile, honest roadster, perfect for
getting around town in style.

Just wish todays production bikes had a little more met-

al and a little less plastic trim and not just harping on Tri-
umph, its everyone. The Triumph that caught the eye is
the Speed Triple, a Triumph truly capable of coming be-
tween me and my wallet. Seriously, would you really buy
a new Bonneville? Nope, if you want a Bonneville, buy a
classic like the 69.

The rst car he bought was from his fa-

taught himself how to work on the body,
sprayed her yellow and black and he put
a Standard 10 engine in her. This was
his rst car and also the start of his new
found inspiration and hobby.

He then bought his second car, a 1968

Ford Corsair at a garage. He then bought
a 1973 Grenada with his fathers help
and they built her together. His father
5. 4. didnt like to customise a car, he liked a
car to be original. Jurie liked to change
the look completely and sprayed half of
the Granadas roof white (against his fa-
thers wishes). He really loved this car.

In 1974 he bought a 1969 white Zeph-

er. His wife became pregnant in the time
they had the car and they bragged with
old photos of her standing in front of the
Zepher. He built a few cars in between,
6. sprayed friends and familys cars and
taught himself how to airbrush ames.
One of the rst airbrush works Jurie did
was Conan the Barbarian. He also re-
members airbrushing Red Sonja, it was
very popular on television and comic
books in those days. At this time he met
his friend Chokkie Carbis, who used to
race at Dunswarts.

Jurie decided to start racing Hot Rods

at Dunswart in Boksburg and his rst
racing car was a Mini. The rst weekend
60 SAHR
he and his friend Chris Jonck raced they had a accident and the one Mini
was on top of the other Minis roof, which should have stopped them from ever
wanting to race again but it didnt. Not long after, his brother Frans also started
racing and when his son was old enough he also started racing. Speed was now
dominating the passion for Classics but the funds were depleted and sponsor-
ship was hard to get.

Jurie never stopped going to car shows and decided it is time to re-ignite his pas-
sion. He bought a Popular body in Germiston for a mere R170,00. The body was
7. not too bad but he wanted to change the whole look. He sprayed her black with
grey on the boot and airbrushed Conan in blue on the back. He then got a 1946
Anglia which is one of his favorites and he learned how to change and mould the
body, the fenders and how to lower it. The upholstery he also learned to do as a
young boy when he helped his uncle. It took Jurie seven years to build this one.
The Anglia was sprayed red and on the back he airbrushed a tombstone with a
tree and an owl and the words Old Fords Never Die and on the front fenders,
8. a standing Conan with a sword. People always compliment him on his artwork.

Jurie then started the Standard 1948 project which took him over 18 months to
build. He sprayed her blue, with silver, (which he had mixed at Freds Auto Paints)
she had mags on and turned out to be a real beauty. He sold her at the rst meet-
ing he took her to at Piston Ring to Uncle Tommy. At that same meeting where she
was sold, a man with his car on a trailer took a corner and damaged the Standard.
He paid for the damages and luckily Uncle Tommy still wanted her and said he
will x her up himself.

In 2010 he customized and sprayed his friend Koos Anglia. Sadly due to unfore-
seen circumstances, Koos sold her to a gentleman from Durban. She was made
lower and wider with a roof chop and sprayed Ford Focus orange and black and
9. the seats were upholstered. Jurie got a 46 Ford Anglia as part of the payment for
building Koos Anglia and wants to transform her into a hot new Rod.

By the time he started stripping the Anglia, he had already designed her in his
mind. He bought a Volvo 1969 station wagon for the front suspension and tted a
diff. The engine was from a Ford Grenada that he bought and everything lined up
perfectly. The oor panels were very rusted so the next step was to x and close
it up. He widened the fenders 70mm on each side and in the front he has 195/60
