2016 Semester 1 Report

Understanding this report

Children receive an overall grade (A to E) for their achievement in each learning area. In some learning areas they may
also receive a grade for the learning area components assessed.

In Year 1 and 2, schools have the option to report using achievement descriptors rather than letter grades, for example
`Satisfactory achievement rather than `C.

Grading scale
GRADE DESCRIPTION
The student demonstrates excellent achievement of what
A
is expected for this year level.

The student demonstrates high achievement of what is

B
expected for this year level.

The student demonstrates satisfactory achievement of

C
what is expected for this year level.

The student demonstrates limited achievement of what is

D
expected for this year level.

The student demonstrates very low achievement of what is

E
expected for this year level.

The A E grade scale summarises the standard of achievement associated with each learning area. The scale
describes the depth of knowledge, understandings and skills that children working at that standard typically show.

If your child receives a `C grade, they are achieving at the required level for their year.

Maintaining a grade in a learning area from one semester to the next is an indication of positive achievement and
expected development.

A child who is on an Individual Education Plan will have progress reported against learning outcomes outlined in the
Individual Education Plan not using A-E grades.

COMMENT
Brody reads texts using text-processing strategies to maintain fluency but would benefit from attempting to read with
more expression. He can identify the main ideas from texts he has read and can accurately comprehend literal
questions but has difficulty answering inferential questions. Brody has a talent for creative writing. He writes coherent
and engaging imaginative texts using an appropriate structure. Brody uses a variety of sentence types and topic-
specific vocabulary to make his writing detailed and credible. In Library, he demonstrated a very good understanding
of the features, main idea and moral in fables. Brody has enjoyed the opportunity to participate in the Enrichment unit,
Investigating Oobleck: What Do Scientists Do? He confidently investigated the properties of oobleck, making
valuable contributions to our discussions. Brody used this knowledge to design a spacecraft capable of landing on a
sea of oobleck. He identified strengths and improvements needed in his work following testing.

solves problems using multiplication facts to 10 x 10 and related division facts. He has difficulty interpreting
information and scales contained in maps. Brody can measure and compare temperature, length, mass and capacity
using scaled instruments. He completed the numeracy investigation iFlicks Movie Marathon during Enrichment.
Brody created a column graph to show the number of movie sessions per week. He wrote five complex, detailed
