Em So Tom e Prncipe
especialidades do Instituto Marques Valle Flor.
crianas.

Abstract
Hearing has an important impact in cognition and in relationships
between people.
In So Tom e Principe, since February 2011, we started an
audiological screening integrated in a program called Sade para
todos especialidades from an Non-Governmental Organisation
- Instituto Marqus de Valle Flor.
Hearing assessment was made for periods of one week, three
or four times per year. We concluded that there was about 60%
of neurosensorial hearing loss.
This hearing loss dictates an important impact in the childs
psychomotor development leading to the isolation of the child
and the impoverishment of social skills.
Since February 2012, we are implementing hearing aids in
children with neurosensorial hearing loss and language disorders.
Currently, we are revaluating these children and our results show
a positive evolution in children's social integration.

Abstract
This paper aims at analysing the process of Brunos lan-
guage acquisition, a deaf bimodal bilingual child with a cochlear
implant, taking into account the stages of acquisition according
to generative linguistics. Considering the bimodal and bilingual
communication, our goal is to analyse the development of the
two languages, Portuguese and sign language, the possible
effects of the two modalities and the implications in the generative
theory. The videos used for the research are part of a database
that belongs to the Centre of Sign Languages Acquisition of
the Federal University of Santa Catarina, and are funded by the
Institutes of Health and by the National Research Council. After
the videos are transcribed, a description of both languages will be
made, noting if by the age of five the child has already acquired
language with almost the same pattern as an adult, if any of the
languages is the dominant one, and if there is the influence of
one language over the other while the child is interacting with his
family. Since the two languages are from different modalities, i.e.,
Portuguese is auditory-oral and sign language is visuospatial, they
can occur simultaneously, thus making it interesting to analyse
language development in deaf children with cochlear implants.
What is already possible to notice is that Bruno was encouraged to
communicate with both languagesusing more oral communication
with hearing people and signs with deaf people, and even though
he knows how to communicate in Portuguese he still uses his
native language (Libras). Its through these observations that one
can rethink the teaching methodologies and the importance of
sign language in the life of the deaf.

Fazem parte do nosso corpus nove

Abstract
An interesting linguistic phenomenon that happens in the
interaction among bilingual people is code-switching (emmorey et
al. 2005; lillo-martin et al. 2010; odlin, 2009; williams; hammarberg,
1998). In this paper, we are investigating code-switching among
oral Brazilian Portuguese and Brazilian Sign Language Libras, in
the same enunciative chain, intending to identify and analyze the
use of code-switching in the speech of a child and of an adult (both
hearing from deaf parents), interacting in an intermodal bilingual
context, with deaf and hearing interlocutors. Code-switching in
languages, in this case, occurs when a person stops to speak in
Portuguese and he/she alternates to sign. The present research
is an exploratory study with qualitative analysis. Our corpus is
composed of nine sections of interactions in Libras and oral
Brazilian Portuguese, recorded in video, part of the Bimodal
Bilingual Development Project data, at UFSC. The data shows that
adult and childs characteristics of code-switching seem to have
similarities and differences. The adult seems to be more worried
about the course of the interaction when she switches. On the
other hand, the child did not seem to use code-switching for
specific pragmatic reasons. In regard to the switching extension,
we noticed that both the child and the adult used more than one
word sentences. The role of the interlocutors seems to be decisive
in the interactions investigated here especially the ones with
the adult, since the child is still acquiring awareness about the
role of the interlocutor in an interaction.
