Although every effort has been made to ensure that this document is
correct and complete, Olympus Winter & Ibe cannot be held responsible
for the safety and reliability of any equipment which has been repaired

2 General Information
This Service Manual for the Xenon E-180 describes procedures for conducting Technical
Safety Checks, repairs and service diagnoses. In addition, this Service Manual comprises a
short technical description of the unit.
Technical Safety Checks as well as service diagnoses and repairs may only be performed by
or delegated to persons who, on the basis of their training, knowledge and practical
experience, are able to properly perform these Technical Safety Checks and remain
independent of any stipulations placed by any other persons.
Although this Service Manual comprises detailed descriptions of the processes involved,
repairs, maintenance work and modifications to the Xenon E-180 should be carried out only
by specially trained and authorized persons.
The manufacturer shall accept no liability for damages resulting from any unauthorized or
improper repairs or maintenance work to the unit.

3 Technical Description

3.1 Intended Use


The Xenon E-180 is a high intensity Xenon light source for all applications with fibre-optic
illumination. The light intensity makes the light source usable for almost all endoscopy
disciplines.
Centre of the unit is a 180 W Xenon gas discharge lamp fixed mounted in a reflector. The
Color temperature is ~5600K. This is equal to sun light and enables true colour
reproduction.
The output intensity can be easily controlled without influence on the quality of light.
The equipment is designed according to the latest standards of security for medical
equipment and complies with the demands of CE.

Mains switch
The control unit is turned on by switching the mains switch.
The mains switch has two different switching positions:
I on
O off
When the control unit is switched on, the switch is illuminated green.

Control of light intensity


This is used to adjust the intensity of the output manually. Turning the knob to the right will
increase the light intensity

Lamp life indicator


Indicates the remaining life time of the Xenon lamp. When you switch on the light source it
will start up with internal self-check. After 500 hours working time, the indicator LAMP
CHG will start flashing. It is recommended to replace the lamp with a new lamp.

3.3.2 Operating elements on the rear

When running the equipment in rooms which comply with class 1 or 2E according to
MedGV, the light source must be joined to the central potential equalization of the OR or of
the equipment trolley by means of a grounding cable.

This is the connector for mains voltage. Use only the added mains cable!

4 Technical Safety Check

4.1 General Information


Annually, beginning at the time the unit is delivered to the customer or the most recent
inspection completed by the manufacturer, the following Technical Safety Checks must be
carried out for the Xenon E-180.
Technical Safety Checks may only be performed by or delegated to persons who, on the
basis of their training, knowledge and practical experience, are able to properly perform
these Technical Safety Checks and remain independent of any stipulations placed by any
other persons.
Technical Safety Checks must be carried out in the order outlined in this manual and
documented accordingly. A copy of the "Technical Safety Checks" form, which can be
found at the end of this Service Manual, may be used for documentation purposes.
Particular attention must be paid to local and other applicable regulations during the
completion of measurements and checks.
The results of all tests must be documented; documents must remain with the unit.

4.2 Equipment and Preparation


Place the unit in a location which is suitable for conducting the following checks and turn it
off. Connect the unit with a power cable to a mains power outlet which corresponds to the
information given on the nameplate
The following equipment is required or recommended for the completion of Technical
Safety Checks:
Measuring instrument for ground resistance
Measuring instrument for insulation resistance
Measuring instrument for leakage current

4.3 Visual Inspection


The proper condition of the unit is to be determined on the basis of visual inspection, and
particular attention must be paid to the following points.

4.4 Ground Resistance
Test in accordance with IEC 601-1.
Compliance with national regulations and standards must be observed.
Measurement:
The ground resistance between the plug of the power cable and any touchable part of the
unit, which might be energized in case of malfunction, must be tested.

Take measurements at the following points:


POAG potential equalizer plug on the rear panel.
Both Phillips screws in the power line receptacle.
Top cover.
Bottom cover.
Right and left side plates.

Result:
The value must stay constant while measuring. The ground resistance may be 100m
maximum.

4.5 Leakage Current


Test in accordance with IEC 601-1.
Compliance with national regulations and standards must be observed.

Rationale: Alterations in the safety structure of the device can be detected by means of
regular measurements of the equivalent leakage current. This approach involves comparison
of newly measured values with those initially measured.

Measurement Device (MD):


Use the measuring circuit (MD) as shown in the illustration.

Carry out the measurement using the accessories.


Set the power switch of the device to I.
Carry out the measurement at the rated voltage of the device.
Keep all cables used at a distance of at least 20 cm from the device and from all other
cables, to help ensure that every influence on the measurement results is avoided.

Evaluation.
The measured values and the measuring method must be documented and evaluated. For
documentation, use the form at the end of this service manual.

Compare all equivalent leakage currents with the maximum permissible value.
In case the values exceed 90% of the maximum compare the measured values with the
values for the device first measured.
If the comparison shows a sharp increase, or former values are not available, the time
until the next check can be shorten.

4.6 Insulation Resistance
Test in accordance with IEC 601-1.
Compliance with national regulations and standards must be observed.
The following insulation resistance paths (including power cable) must be inspected:
Mains Plug Protective Earthing (MP-PE)
Testing voltage must be attached to both connected power supplies and the ground
connection.
Applied Part Protective Earthing (AP-PE)
Testing voltage must be attached to the connected contacts in the applied part and the
ground connection.

The test voltage must amount to at least 500 V.


Result. The insulation resistance must be at least 100 M.

4.7 Evaluation and Documentation


The results of Technical Safety Checks must be documented in writing.
If, in the course of a Technical Safety Check, defects should become evident and the safety
of patients or operators cannot be ensured, the unit must be repaired by an authorized
service center before the unit can again be released for use. If this should not be possible, the
unit must be sent to the manufacturer together with a detailed description of the malfunction.
Following any maintenance or repair work, Technical Safety Checks must always be carried
out again.

5 Service Diagnosis

5.1 General Information


If, during the course of the operation of the Xenon E-180 or during any Technical Safety
Checks, it should become evident that the unit does not function properly, the malfunction
must be identified and remedied. Service diagnoses must be carried out in a systematic and
structured manner and in the order outlined in this manual.
If, in the course of service diagnoses of the unit, any alterations are made or repairs carried
out, a Technical Safety Check must always (again) be carried out.

5.2 Operator Malfunctions


Before any repair work is begun, it is essential that a determination is made as to whether or
not it is the unit which has actually malfunctioned. In many cases, operator malfunctions
take place. If no malfunction is able to be identified within the unit itself, it is then advisable
to confer with the operator of the unit.
The following operator malfunction may occur:

5.3 Troubleshooting
In any case of malfunction, you should check the wiring at first. Most errors are based on
wrong wiring. Following this table you will be able to identify the damage and needed
measurement for repair. The numbers in brackets will lead you to the corresponding
chapter.

6 Repairs

6.1 General Information


The manufacturer will provide circuit diagrams, itemised parts listings, descriptions, sets
of adjustment instructions and other items of available documentation to suitably qualified
user personnel duly authorised by the manufacturer for their use in repairing those
components of the equipment that have been designated by their respective manufactures
as reparable.
Only the supply of such technical documentation relating to the equipment shall not be
construed as constituting manufacturers authorisation of users personnel, regardless of
their levels of technical training, to open or repair the equipment.
Explicitly exempted here from are those maintenance and repair operations described in
this manual.
We recommend annual check by our service personnel.

All repairs and changes must be documented; documents must remain with the unit.
Particular attention must be paid to local and other applicable regulations during the
completion of any repairs or other work completed.
Before undertaking any repairs or maintenance work, the unit must be switched off and
disconnected from the power supply. All repairs (apart from the replacement of mains
fuses) are carried out with the unit opened.

Following any repairs or maintenance work to the unit, a complete Technical Safety
Check must be performed.

6.2 Exchange of the mains fuses


The mains fuses are located on the rear panel of the control unit in a small drawer next to
the power cable connector.
If you need to exchange the mains fuses, proceed as follows:
Use only ceramic fuses with the same electrically and mechanically specifications!

Switch off the unit and disconnect the power cable.


Loosen the drawer by unfastening the two clamps located on the top and on the bottom
of the drawer with a peaked tool and pull out the drawer.
Take out the fuses.
Check the fuses. Check the fuse with an ohmmeter.
Install new fuses. Values as indicated on the name plate.
Re-install the fuse-drawer.
Switch on the equipment again. If you have exchanged a defective fuse against a new
one and the fuse blows again, the unit has an additional error. In this case, proceed as
indicated in chapter 5.3 Troubleshooting.

6.3 Opening the Unit
Before opening the unit, press the power switch to off (O) and disconnect the unit from
the power supply.

Remove the 5 screws (2 on each side,


one on the rear).

Carefully lift the cover and place it


behind the unit. Pay special attention to
the ground cable.

6.4 Closing the Unit


After completion of repairs, the unit must be closed. Check if the connection of the ground
cable is still intact, re-connect, if necessary. Carefully place the cover on the unit and
replace the 5 screws. Perform all electrical checks as described in chapter 4.

6.5 Exchange main switch


Open the unit according to 6.3.
Disconnect all 4 cables from the power switch, remove the nut and push the switch from the
inside to the outside. Re-connect the cables to the new switch (pay attention to the
direction). Push the switch into the front panel until you hear a click.
Close the unit as described in 6.4.

6.6 Exchange of lamp
If the Xenon lamp is damaged or the lamp life has expired, replace it with Xenon lamp
WA58677A.

Warning: Risk of burn


The Xenon lamp and its holder are extremely hot after use. Do not touch
the Xenon lamp and its holder after use. Let the Xenon lamp and its
holder cool down.
Warning: Risk of injury
The lamp is filled with Xenon gas at very high pressure! Lamps must be handled
with the same care and caution given any vessel containing high pressure! A
hazard exists if the window or ceramic fractures and may cause explosive
mechanical failure. Face shields or proper safety glasses, gloves and suitable protection for
your neck (such as a thick scarf) should be weared during all handling operations! Also read
the instruction coming with the lamp carefully!

Warning: Risk of damage:


Do not touch the glass of the Xenon lamp. This may cause stains and
significantly reduce the lamp life.

In order to exchange the lamp, proceed as follows:


Open the unit according to 6.3.
Remove the Xenon lamps connector from its
receptacle.
Open the cable clamp.
Loosen the knurled screw of the Xenon lamps fixation
lever and slide the fixation lever upwards.
Hold the Xenon lamp by the ceramic socket and
cautiously slide it backwards from its holder.

Insert the new Xenon lamp.


Hold the Xenon lamp by the ceramic socket so that the lower cable faces the light
sources outer wall.
Cautiously insert the Xenon lamp into its holder until it stops.
Slightly lift the Xenon lamp upwards, close the fixation lever and tighten the screw.
Insert the Xenon lamps connector into its receptacle until it clicks into position.
Insert the cables into the cable clamp and close the cable
clamp.
Reset the lamp life indicator by sliding the setting bar to
the other side.
If necessary, remove dust from the light source using a
vacuum cleaner with a small nozzle. Likewise dust settles
on the heat protective filter (with lens, optional), this should also be cleaned with a soft
cloth or blotting paper and pure alcohol or spirits.
Close the unit as described in 6.4.

Please, send back used lamps to the manufacturer for disposal! Never dispose them of
undamaged, follow the instructions of the lamps manufacturer.

6.7 Exchange of control board
The control board is mounted on the partition
and fixed with 2 screws.
Open the unit according to 6.3.
Disconnect the lamp plug.
Remove the 2 screws holding the board.
Disconnect the plug with the blue and red
cables.
Disconnect the red and black cables on the
opposite side by loosening the screws - pay attention to their polarization!
Exchange the board and assemble in reverse order.
Close the unit as described in 6.4.

6.8 Exchange of ventilators


Open the unit according to 6.3.
Remove the 4 nuts on the bottom, holding the Mains Transformer Protection.
Remove the 2 Phillips screws and carefully lift the Mains Transformer Protection.
Disconnect the 2 plugs for the ventilators power supply. They are located right next to
the blue capacitors.
Remove the partition by loosening the 3 nuts on the bottom. Now it is more easy to

Assemble in reverse order, pay attention to the polarization of the plugs.
Close the unit as described in 6.4.

6.9 Cleaning Filter

Warning: Risk of burn


The Xenon lamp and its holder are extremely hot after use. Do not touch the
Xenon lamp and its holder after use. Let the Xenon lamp and its holder cool
down.

Open the unit according to 6.3.


Turn the intensity control knob to -.
Remove the lamp as described in 6.6
Remove the 2 screws holding the Filter element
and carefully lift the element out of the lamp
holder.
Clean the filter carefully with a soft cloth and
alcohol.
Assemble in reverse order.
Close the unit as described in 6.4.
