Assignment 11 Isolation (20 marks)

Isolator

Original System Modified System

A sensitive machine of mass m = 200 kg is mounted on a support with stiffness ks = 250 kN/m. A
nearby machine operating at 450 rpm causes harmonic excitation y(t) = Y sin t of the foundation at
this frequency. The amplitude of vibration of the foundation of the sensitive machine is Y = 3 mm.
The system is to be modified to incorporate an isolator which will reduce the steady state transmitted
force to 250 N, and which limits the amplitude of vibration of the machine to a maximum of 1 mm.

(a) For the original system determine the steady-state amplitude of vibration of the mass m and the
force transmitted to it.

(b) If a damped isolator is used, with damping ratio = 0.2, determine analytically the required
stiffness ki and damping constant ci of the isolator, that would meet the two criteria given above.

(c) For the isolator parameters as specified in (b) determine graphically the range of forcing fre-
quencies (in rpm) for which the amplitude of the machine is greater than 4.5 mm.
