Task 2 Short Answer Questions

Assessment instructions
Please read the following questions and provide a brief answer below.
You can use the workbook available in Moodle as your primary source of information when trying to
answer the questions. However, you must write your answer in your own words (otherwise, it may be
considered plagiarism).

ILSC Business College BSBMKG511 Assessment V1.0615 Page 5 of 12

The hardest part of it all will be to understand any new terminology or words. Your Trainer is here to
help you so please ask as many times as you like until you fully understand the wording.

1. Explain what Central Tendency is and give an example.

The term central tendency refers to the "middle" value or perhaps a typical value of the data, and is
measured using the mean, median, or mode. Each of these measures is calculated differently, and
the one that is best to use depends upon the situation.

2. What is Dispersion, give an example?

The distribution of values in relation to specific categories. Measurements of dispersion include
standard deviations, ranges, and averages. Used in statistics.

3. Explain what Sampling is.

In many experiments, sampling an entire population as part of a research experiment is impossible,
due to the time, expense and sheer number of subjects. Sampling is a method of studying from a
few selected items, instead of the entire big number of units. The small selection is called sample.
The large number of items of units of particular characteristic is called population. The purpose of
all the sampling techniques is to give the equal chance of any item to be selected without bias.
There are two types of sampling techniques: probability sampling and non-probability sampling. It is
an essential part of most research, and researchers must know how to choose sample groups that
are as free from bias as possible.

4. Explain what PEST analysis is giving a brief example of each area in the analysis.
PEST Analysis is a simple and widely used tool that helps analyze the Political, Economic, Socio-
Cultural, and Technological changes in business environment. This helps to understand the "big
picture" forces of change that businesses can get exposed to, and, from this, take advantage of the
opportunities that they present.

5. Give three examples of what Cultural Aspects mean when analysing international data.
From an international marketing perspective, you need to be aware of the culture of the country or
region that the organisation is targeting and recognise how this culture will potentially influence
marketing activities. Cultural aspect describes a people's religion, spirituality, economic, family and
community life, government, sports, foods, art, and other parts of their culture.

6. Create a Quantitative question

Deals with numbers.
Data which can be measured.
Length, height, area, volume, weight, speed, time, temperature, humidity, sound levels, cost,
members, ages, etc.

8. Describe what Best Practice is.

Best practices are a set of guidelines, ethics or ideas that represent the most efficient or prudent
course of action. Best practices are often set forth by an authority, such as a governing body or
management, depending on the circumstances. While best practices generally dictate the
recommended course of action, some situations require that industry best practices be followed.

9. Describe what Benchmarking is.

Benchmarking is the process through which a company measures its products, services, and
practices against its toughest competitors, or those companies recognized as leaders in its industry.
Benchmarking focuses on company-to-company comparisons of how well basic functions and
processes are performed.

It is one of a manager's best tools for determining whether the company is performing particular
functions and activities efficiently, whether its costs are in line with those of competitors, and
whether its internal activities and business processes need improvement. The idea behind
benchmarking is to measure internal processes against an external standard. It is a way of learning
which companies are best at performing certain activities and functions and then imitatingor
better still, improving ontheir techniques.

10. What could be an example that explains what Strategic Alliance is?
Strategic alliances can contribute to the success of a business and are beneficial when maintained
with efficient management. As defined in Global Business Today the term strategic alliances
refers to a cooperative agreement between potential or actual competitors for the benefit of all Commented [U4]: Good answer and competent for Task 2

companies concerned (Hill, et al., 2011). The overall concept of a strategic alliance is that it is a
relationship between two companies which allows them to create more value than they can on
their own. Strategic alliances are becoming increasingly important to the overall strategy of
companies as they can generate significant competitive advantage when they are used effectively.
They can occur through the form of formal joint ventures or short term contractual agreements
where companies agree to cooperate on particular tasks such as developing a new product. And
they can also be informal, for example a company may just seek to use the expertise of a similar
company or government agency to strengthen the businesses own capacities.

Spotify & Uber partnership is great example. The ability to enter a hired car welcomed by your
favorite playlist provides added value, meaningful competitive advantage and exclusivity for Uber
cars. For Spotify, it provides an incentive for users to upgrade to the premium level and a unique
point of difference that Pandora, iTunes or YouTube dont have.

Task 3 Report

Assessment instructions
Summary: In Task 3 you need to conduct research regarding international students studying in various
countries. Using statistical analysis, you will need to explain the variance in data across a period of 5 years.
You will need to explain the strong growth and decline of Indian international students studying in
Australia. Firstly, you will collect data. Secondly, you will create a report which provides data and an
analysis of the data.

Detail:
1. Find two sets of data:
a. 5 years of data for the number of Indian students that had arrived in Australia
b. 5 years of data for the number of International students that had arrived in:
i. Australia
ii. Canada
iii. United Kingdom
2. Using measures of central tendency demonstrate forecasting:
a. For both sets of data
b. Forecasting for two years from today
c. Analysing the data, identify potential opportunities or threats to the market
3. Prepare, plot and interpret the data from the statistics for visual presentation. Select and use tools that
are appropriate, for example, Excel spreadsheet or similar.
4. Write a report on your findings.
a. What happened to the Indian student numbers?
b. Why are some countries having more or less students than others?
5. The report needs to contain the following:
a. All data in a table format and properly labelled
b. Line graphs to demonstrate increases, stabilization or decreases in past years
c. Line graphs to demonstrate increases, stabilization or decreases in forecasting
d. Pie graphs demonstrating the market breakdown of different countries
e. References & Appendixes
6. You may upload your report as a second file to Moodle or include it at the end of this document.
Please follow your trainers final directions on this.
