Paragraph for Questions 16 to 18

Acceleration is defined as rate of change of velocity i.e.

final velocity initial velocity
acceleration =
time taken
When a force is applied on an object, it accelerates in the direction of force. Force and acceleration are
related by the formula, force = mass acceleration. If an object is in equilibrium, the sum of all the forces
acting on it is zero. The gravitational force applied by earth on an object is given by F = mg, where m =
mass of the object and g = acceleration due to gravity and its value is 9.8 m/s2. Direction of mg is
vertically downwards.

On the basis of given information, answer the following questions.

16. A body moving at 5 m/s is being accelerated at 2 m/s2. Its velocity after 10 seconds will be

17. A block of mass 10 kg is kept on the ground. If the block is at rest, the normal reaction force
applied by the ground on the block will be
(A) 10 N vertically upward (B) 98 N vertically downward
(C) 98 N vertically upward (D) 10 N vertically downward

18. A ball of mass 100 gram is dropped from the top of a building. Its acceleration just after it is
dropped will be
(A) 9.8 m/s2 (B) 0.98 m/s2
2

Comprehension Type

This section contains 1 group of questions. This group has 3 multiple choice question based on a
paragraph. Each question has 4 choices (A), (B), (C) and (D) for its answer, out of which ONLY ONE is
correct.

Paragraph for Questions 16 to 18

On the basis of reactions of metals with oxygen, water, acids, etc., it is found that some metals are highly
reactive, some are less reactive while some others are least reactive (almost unreactive). Thus, metals
can be arranged on the basis of their relative reactivity.

The arrangement of metals in a vertical column in order of their decreasing reactivity downwards is called
the activity series or reactivity series of metals.

However, relative reactivity of certain metals cannot be compared by their reaction with oxygen, water or
acid. This is because some of them may not react with these reagents or it may be difficult to compare the
difference in their reactivity (or speed). Hence the relative reactivity of metals is found on the basis of
displacement reactions. The basic principle of these reactions is that a more reactive metal can displace
a less reactive metal from the solution of its salt. Thus, if a metal A is more reactive than metal B, then
metal A can displace metal B from the salt solution of metal B, i.e.,

Metal A + Salt solution of metal B Salt solution of metal A + Metal B
