History
o Prior to the 19th century, the majority followed their parents
careers. Wealthy families went into professions
o The Industrial Revolution changed the structure of careers. It
created a new freedom and economic system. It enabled migration.
Definitions
o Lifelong process of managing learning, work, leisure and
transitions in order to move toward a personally determined and
evolving preferred future.
o Careers are not tied to one job/occupation
o The individual must take individual responsibility for his own
career, and prepare himself for his work
Theories for Choosing a Vocation:

Study all options for learning
Make a choice based on above

Making career choice is a problem-solving activity
New World of Work:
o Nation-states will be replaced by organizations
o Knowledge as primary resource
o Careers will occur in a global context
